25.01.2022 How to Handle Oestrogen Dominance One of the areas I’m passionate about is Women’s Health. From menstrual issues to PMS to Peri-Menopause and Menopause it’s the area I enjoy most. Naturopathic support has a lot to offer women and it’s absolutely tragic that most women don’t have any idea about herbal medicine and just get onto birth control pills that may well mask symptoms but come with reasonable risks (insulin resistance, blood clots, gall bladder issues, acne and even can...Continue reading
24.01.2022 Did you know taking antibiotics can make us fat? Antibiotics are contributing to our current obesity epidemic. According to a 2011 study in Nature, antibiotics disrupt the metabolic hormones leptin and ghrelin. That effect lasts for at least one year and results in significant weight gain. In another 2012 study, researchers found that British children exposed to antibiotics early in life are more likely to become overweight later in life.... Antibiotics promote thyroid disease, menstrual disorders, and estrogen dominance. Even a few courses of antibiotics can increase the risk of breast cancer by 150 percent. So we need to be careful when we choose to take them. I've heard doctors say they give them out because customers demand them. Keep antibiotics for life saving situations when you can. Not just to feel better because you have a cold and of course always follow your doctors advice.
23.01.2022 Help with Anxiety and Stress in todays world. Anxiety and Stress seem to be dominating many people’s lives these days. One of the most important ways to deal with this is to learn to control your mind. I've been working on being present and stopping the monkey mind from ruling my head and it's wonderful. I always talk to my clients about this as I think it's a really important life skill to know and work on. The more you are not led by your crazy monkey mind, that voice in ...your head that just jabbers on, the more peace you will feel and the more you will tap into your own inner knowing. Quietening the mind is a process. It takes practice and is just something that you need to put a little time into each day to help you be in control of your mind instead of it being in control of you. If only we could teach this stuff in school. The modern world with our radio's, TVs, Internet, constant screen time and noise is really only filling our mind with more chatter and noise that stops us from being in touch with our own guidance and intuition. To some people this is called meditation, to others it’s stillness. There are thousands of apps and YouTube videos to watch and listen to these days to help so I encourage you to explore. Some of my favourite people in the world who talk about this are Eckhart Tolle and Sadhguru. Here is Eckhart on this subject. He is just such a good person to listen to: See more
23.01.2022 This is a big life lesson for all of us. 23.01.2022 Magnesium absorption It’s All in The Form. I don’t know about you but I love the idea of taking magnesium - it’s good for stress, good for sleep, helps support your nervous system, good if your getting cramps including period pain, right? But for me it goes straight through me! Dam! Every single time. For a long time, I couldn’t understand why. I knew that Magnesium Oxide was considered more difficult to absorb but it was cheaper for companies to put in their formulas so i...t was popping up everywhere. I would avoid Mg Oxide like the plague (ok, maybe that’s an exaggeration) but yet I was still having problems. Then I found out that the other types of magnesium that are also difficult for the body to absorb. Let me explain: All minerals in supplements have to be bound to something a carrier compound. This helps it stay in a stable form and ensures it can be absorbed and used by your body. Different forms of magnesium are referred to depending on which carrier compound it’s bound to. This is what you will read when you look at the side of your magnesium supplement. For example, magnesium combined with: An oxide carrier is written as magnesium oxide; A chloride carrier is written as magnesium chloride; A citrate carrier is written as magnesium citrate; and, An amino acid chelate carrier is written as magnesium amino acid chelate So, it turns out that Magnesium Citrate, Mag Chloride and Mag Oxide are not so good for absorption and more likely to just pass straight through your gut. You’re just wasting your money. However, the amino acid chelate form such as magnesium bisglycinate are the most well absorbed forms. The glycine molecules that the magnesium is bound to, being protein, allow the intestinal wall to recognize the molecule as a protein and facilitate easy absorption. This also bodes well for tolerability as it’s less likely to draw water to it and cause loose bowels. So check your magnesium supplements and see what form you are taking and see if you need to make a switch!
22.01.2022 I often get clients who are having problems with heavy menstrual bleeds particularly in their 40's as the effects of oestrogen dominance show up in their bodies. So I was looking into the pros and cons of Endometrial Ablation which on the surface could really be a simple answer. But for some women this can leave them in chronic pain or there can be worse complications. So it's not to be considered lightly. On the plus side we can use herbal medicine to reduce bleeding, balanc...e hormones and I think the key is education about what happens to your hormones as you head towards menopause. And subsequently learning the symptoms and treating the imbalance sooner rather than later is a great idea. If you have concerns around your hormones and problems with your menstrual cycle then I'd love to help you. Herbal medicine really has so much to offer women and I see it as a great tragedy that so many people don't know about plant medicines. I'm keeping the knowledge alive and it's very much my life's passion so if you are interested or you need help please get in touch. See more
22.01.2022 What an awesome speech
21.01.2022 Protecting our skin from the sun with herbal medicine. Medicines made from plants always have a range of antioxidants in them - because plants contain them. This example is about a common herb called Eyebright - one often used from eye irritations and for respiratory congestion. It works really well and I've used it many times. Now science has shown it can protect us from the damaging rays of the sun. Skin aging is a complex process with one of the major contributing factor...s being solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation which is divided into three categories: UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA and UVB can penetrate the Earth’s atmosphere and cause sunburn, photo-aging and some forms of skin cancer in humans. Cumulative exposure to UVB evokes photo-aging, which is manifested by the formation of deep wrinkles, pigmentation and dry skin. A recent in vitro study strongly suggests that Eyebright ethanol extract could reduce UVB-induced photo-aging by alleviating oxidative stress, pro inflammatory activity and cell apoptosis (that means damaged cells die and don't turn into cancer cells!). Take home message is that herbal medicines heal the body in more ways than one and the more antioxidants you have in your body - the more protected you are from skin cancer. See more
20.01.2022 Round up causing gluten intolerance. I see a huge amount of people who are sensitive to gluten and some that can't tolerate wheat in Australia but can overseas. We've got to realize that pesticides do cause us harm. Many man made chemicals do.
18.01.2022 Another good reason to add Turmeric to your daily diet. It is effective in depression and anxiety. Given that depression is often associated with inflammation and oxidative stress , the potential beneficial effects of curcumin in the underlying cause of depression and anxiety are largely attributed to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Other effects of curcumin involve its impact on serotonin and dopamine release, in the inhibition of monoamine oxidase (MAO) a...nd in the regulation of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis In experimental studies, the antidepressant-like effects of curcumin were comparable to those observed after treatment with classical antidepressants. In a human study, curcumin supplementation (1,000 mg/day) for six weeks was as effective as fluoxetine (20 mg/day) for improving symptoms of major depressive disorder. I guess there are lot of inflamed brains out there!!! So take your curcumin
17.01.2022 Marshmallow. Such a simple herb but such a lifesaver when you can't stop coughing. So soothing for hacking irritated coughs. I keep a bottle handy in my office draw for the times I'm post cold but get an irritated throat from all the talking I do in clinic. There is nothing like it.
16.01.2022 Thought this colour chart was a good guide for kids. Can't tell you how many times my kids have cut up an unripe Avo!
16.01.2022 Plantar fasciitis and herbal medicine. Did you know that herbal medicine can help with painful conditions such as this? I've had great success with my own plantar fasciitis and have gone on to help others. Choosing herbs that reduce inflammation and most importantly improve circulation is the key. I tried everything else but this is what finally resolved the condition. Yippee back to exercise
13.01.2022 Wow! We don't know enough about kids being exposed to electromagnetic radiation from devices let alone Fitbits!
12.01.2022 Have you ever had Bell’s Palsy? Bell’s Palsy is a sudden weakness in the muscles on one half of the face. It can cause pain as it did in my client’s case but mostly it is characterized by muscle weakness that causes one half of the face to droop so that eating and even sleeping become a problem as the mouth cannot move properly and the eye cannot shut. It usually resolves on its own within six months but that is a long time if you are suffering with it! Bells’ palsy may be a... reaction to a viral infection. Occasionally the paralysis is permanent. Something that causes a lot of anxiety and worry in those who have it. I recently had great success using a combination of herbal and nutritional compounds to facilitate significant improvement in a client. They had, of course, done all the standard treatments via their GP and it was really at a wait and see stage when she came to see me. She had not had any improvement for a few months. I immediately started her on her herb mix containing herbs traditionally used for nerve damage such as high dose St John’s Wort and Lion’s Mane as well as some lymphatic and immune herbs that help recover from any type of infection. I chose herbs that have along history of use in Bell’s Palsy and other conditions involving nerve damage and clearing viruses. I also put her on high dose B12 and Zinc to facilitate nerve healing and to support the immune system. As I also have a lot of knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I also put her on a herb formula for supporting circulation as I knew this would also facilitate faster healing and is indicated from a TCM perspective. I also asked her to do a daily facial massage with St John’s Wort oil to stimulate the nerve healing. Really, we were pulling out all the stops to get a positive result. And low and behold she improved out of sight and quickly. I’d say that first improvement was at least 50 70% there as she could now close her eye where previously she couldn’t and would have to sleep with it taped shut. And she could now feel and move her mouth so essentials like eating and drinking were beginning to be more normal. Bear in mind that she had had no improvement for months before she started seeing me. She is continuing to improve every week now. I just love this story because it clearly shows how effective Naturopathic treatments can be where someone has found no relief in main stream medicine. Disappointingly her doctor claimed it was a co-incidence. But not to worry as for me it was just another client whose life I’d improved and who now knows the value of Complementary Medicine. See more
12.01.2022 1000s of consultations with women have taught me that woman really don't understand the transition into menopause. That it takes years, all through your 40s and that they can find safe and effective treatment in herbal tea and Naturopathy. I want to reconnect women to their birthright of using and supporting themselves with herbal medicine. #menopause #perimenopause #healthywoman #herbalmedicine #medicinewoman #individualtreatment #wearealldifferent #naturopathicmedicine #lucyfrewnaturopath
10.01.2022 We are living in an age when many facts are being manipulated and we are being fed into a fear funnel. One of the things I know to be true is information sharing within my industry is being shut down. I just wanted to sometimes share things that come across my desk in my world so that some of you may see it before it's censored. Herbal medicine has played a massive role in dealing with human health for millennia and now the science is catching up. Unfortunately the powers th...at be in this world don't want people to know that there are other ways to support themselves. Also no one can at this stage make a great deal of money out of herbal medicine, after all you can't own a plant. Anyway for your interest: The most recent attention liquorice has received is as an antiviral herb with potential use as part of a strategy to inhibit C O V i D-19. This is based on a 2003 in vitro study in which the constituent, glycyrrhizic acid, inhibited S A R S-c o r o n a v i r u s replication by preventing absorption and penetration of the virus in the early steps of the replicative cycle. While this research cannot be extrapolated to human use liquorice has been used as a harmonising herb in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula Lianhuaqingwen, which has played a substantial role in the management of COVID-19 in China. During the 2002 SARS epidemic TCM treatments were reported to have successfully prevented and treated SARS with 58.3% of confirmed cases receiving TCM. A Cochrane Review found that Chinese herbs, combined with western medicine, significantly improved symptoms of SARS including decreasing body temperature, cough and breathing difficulties, dosages of corticosteroids, improving absorption of pulmonary infiltration (substances associated with pneumonia which can be observed on a chest radiograph) and quality of life.
10.01.2022 Did you know that our bodies are made up of more bacteria cells than actual human cells? Mind blowing. Concerning too as we live in an age where the "kill the germ" mantra has gone over the top. These microbes are an important part of our health, support our immune system, break down food and toxins for us, make some essential nutrients and keep our neurotransmitter levels healthy - that's right - if your microbiome is unhappy you won't be happy. Naturopaths have been awar...e of this and work at supporting your micro-flora (the balance of microbes that make up your body). It's interesting to see that main stream health is now starting to realize this important component of human health. We need to be more aware of the chemicals we put in and around our bodies that drastically alter this microbiome and do all that we can to support it. Something I do for people is microbiome testing which can reveal some major problems with your gut flora. Contact me via Go Vita Erina or Invitation To Health, Wyoming for a consultation. See more
10.01.2022 Food allergies linked to early use of antibiotics. The more we disturb our gut flora the sicker we get!
09.01.2022 Quick tips to make healthy meal choices this Christmas... 1. Eat all the greens and salad you want 2. Eat lean proteins like chicken, fish, eggs, ham and turkey 3. Swap high sugar drinks for Kombucha or Ice Tea sweetened with stevia 4. Go for a walk after lunch before you overload on more food ... 5. If you indulge in sweets try to choose those with lots or fibre or eat some fibre rich foods at the same time to reduce the sugar absorption. 6. Recognize when you are full. 08.01.2022 Something that comes up repeatedly in my clients is reflux. Now the worst possible thing you can do is take a prescription "PPI" for this as you wind up with a range of other problem such as low B12, poor absorption of calcium, low iron, and a digestive system ripe for overgrowth of " bad bugs" leading to SIBO ( Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrown). For most people this is awful. For the elderly it becomes critical as the low B12 leads to anemia, fatigue, dementia, dizziness..., shortness of breath, easy bruising worsening of calcium to support bones and more. The poor absorption of nutrients leads to a slow steady decline in the elderly. There are just so many ways to resolve reflux and my particular favorite is the use of herbal medicine to actually strengthen digestion as oppose to weaken it. Using zinc can also improve stomach acid and you can use a gut repair powders containing slippery elm and glutamine and certain herbs to sooth irritated oesophageal membranes and heal ulcers. In Europe digestive bitters are used in a similar way - to strengthen your digestion as you age to improve your health. Unfortunately Australia is lacking such traditions but us Naturopaths are still waving the flag of using bitter herbs for digestion. Hope this post helps someone out there See more
07.01.2022 Thought I'd share a interesting article about brain inflammation and damage to the Myelin sheath covering nerves post c o / V#id. Lets see if FB sensors this.
04.01.2022 So I've had a rash of clients with skin conditions of late (excuse the pun!) who have been suffering with eczema. I wanted to share with you my successes to help people understand that you can get better, significantly better with Naturopathic Medicine. One case I have been helping is with a 6 yr old little girl who's mother was at her wits end with this poor little thing scratching all night and developing welts and bleeding from her sores from scratching so much. She had al...so started reacting to multiple foods and her diet was really getting quite restricted. To add to this she had had a number of trips to the hospital due to asthma flaring up. So life was quite stressful. Unfortunately as is often the case they were doing and had tried all the mainstream pharmaceutical answers and she was just not getting better. She had undergone some allergy testing but just avoiding these foods was not really getting her better and she seemed to be developing more allergies. As a naturopath I took a detailed case history. This is no small thing in terms of understanding someone's health. I can see that is one of the ways that the medical profession misses patterns and fails to join the dots. It became clear to me that this little girls gut was really dysbiotic and basically messed up. She had had to have repeated antibiotics when she was younger as part of the treatment for her asthma. Her gut flora was not happy to the point she had sloppy and very smelly stools. Clearly there was a degree of gut inflammation and leaky gut. So we got started on a protocol to help reduce her allergic reactivity, support her immune system, strengthen her digestion and repair her gut. I also chose suitable herbal medicines for her to reduce her allergies and repair the skin. Slowly but surely she has made steady progress and I'd like to share a photo of the transition below. Needless to say I am thrilled to bits to be able to help this little girl and her mother is so very thankful that she saw the process through. We still have a little way to go but she is improved about 70%. To add to this she has not had a single asthma attack as normally by this time of year she would have had numerous trips to the hospital. I hope this encourages others to consider seeing a Naturopath. Herbal medicine is truly amazing.
04.01.2022 Just sharing this as this stretch will save you so much lower back grief, not to mention sciatica. Love this one.
