25.01.2022 Polyphenols are important dietary constituents that are often overlooked in dietary research. With the focus more often on the fat, protein, carbohydrate, vitam...in and mineral content, these modulating polyphenols are left out of the discussion. These polyphenols have a very important role in mental health. They play an imperative role in addressing inflammation of the brain and nervous system and they can also manipulate the microbiome which we know can influence our mood. Here is a great review of the effect of polyphenols on mental health done by Jessica Bayes - Nutritionist, David Sibbritt and Bio Concepts alumni Janet Schloss: https://academic.oup.com//article-abstra/11/3/602/5613091. Jessica is exploring the role of polyphenols in the Mediterranean Diet on depression. Given her initial research, which I'm sure many of you in clinic would echo the same sentiments, that our patient's diets leave much to be desired: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32861952/. Australia has a number of great researchers in nutrition and it is exciting to see more high quality research coming out from the next generation. Michael O.

23.01.2022 Today's quote is from the Father of Medicine. Hippocrates was born around 460 BC on the island of Kos, Greece. He became known as the founder of modern medicine as he was the first known physician who believed that diseases were caused by some type of natural action instead of being instigated by the spirits or gods. Hippocrates was also the first known physician to recognize that thoughts and emotions arise in the brain rather than the heart. Hippocrates placed great importance to what a patient eats or what foods should avoid. He believed that diet is important in a person’s life, a good diet could keep people healthy, and that a proper diet could have healing qualities for certain ailments.

23.01.2022 You are what you eat but more importantly, you are what your body ABSORBS. If you don’t absorb the nutrients in your food, your cells, muscles, brain, and organs struggle to function optimally. To maintain healthy nutrient absorption, you should: Focus on your good bacteria ratio with a probiotic Make healthy fat choices Give your body plenty of nutrients to absorb... 14.01.2022 Christmas is 5 weeks away so why not use this time to get your body in the best possible shape before the Christmas indulgence! Here are some great ideas on how you can prepare in the lead up to Christmas: 1. Exercise more - Walking for as little as 30 minutes a day can boost your mood, lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes, and improve your memory.... 2. Take part in a boot camp Fitness boot camps are ideal for people who need that little extra push and encouragement. 3. Get enough sleep - If you do not sleep enough, your levels of cortisol will be heightened a hormone associated with stress that is known to increase hunger and give you an appetite for sugary and unhealthy foods. 4. Hydrate your body - Being hydrated will give you more energy, will prevent you from overeating and will improve your skin the perfect benefit for those who want to look their best when attending Christmas parties. 5. Add more fibre to your diet - Not only is it good for your body, but it gives a chance to cleanse your bowels before a heavy month of eating Christmas food and drinking at every party you attend. #nutrition #exercise #naturopath #naturopathy #townsville #supportlocaltownsville #lucyholland

08.01.2022 Have a good look at your diet as it’s very important if you want more energy in your daily life. Some dietary suggestions for fighting fatigue include: Drink plenty of water sometimes you feel tired simply because you’re mildly dehydrated. A glass of water will help do the trick, especially after exercise. Minimise caffeine to avoid tiredness and avoid yoyo energy levels. ... Eat breakfast food boosts your metabolism and gives the body energy to burn. Don’t skip meals going without food for too long allows blood sugar levels to dip. Eat a healthy diet increase the amount of fruit, vegetables, wholegrain foods, full fat dairy products and lean meats in your diet. Reduce the amount of high fat, high sugar and high salt foods. Don’t overeat large meals can drain your energy. Instead of eating three big meals per day, try eating six mini-meals to spread your intake more evenly and kick your metabolism into action! Eat iron rich foods women and children, in particular, are prone to iron-deficiency or anaemia, which can lead to feeling fatigued. Make sure your diet includes iron-rich foods such as lean red meat.

02.01.2022 Hippocrates said more than 2000 years ago that all disease begins in the gut and research in the past 5-10 years has really been confirming this idea. The gut is essentially how we interact with our external environment, it’s important for nutrient absorption and to prevent bad stuff from getting into our system. Top tips to look after your gut: Manage stress appropriately its common to see gut issues arise from periods of high stress... Only use antibiotics when essential Take a good quality probiotic Eat fresh produce, including traditional foods such as bone broth and fermented foods Give your gut a break (avoid grazing throughout the whole day) Intermittent fasting can be a good option If you’re concerned you have a gut issue, book an appointment with a naturopath, we can help you sort out any issues and put you on the right track to heal your gut.
