17.01.2022 You can't 'outsource' leadership communication when there is a critical incident in the workplace. Don't wait until an event happens before you consider: * What type of information should be communicated? * Who should issue the communication? * How should information be communicated? * What direct personal communication required? * Follow up communication and timelines? * A clear offer of help and practical support Luemo members can read the full article below in our Management Resources section to help with planning. #workplacementalhealth #workplacewellbeing #workplacewellness

They estimate that in Australia, 40% of the population is not getting enough (7-9 hours per night is generally recommended for adults). They estimate the nation’s financial burden of inadequate sleep at $66.3billion in 2016-17, and the personal cost even higher. Someone dies in Australia every day from a sleep-related vehicle or industrial accident. #workplacewellness #workplacewellbeing #workplacementalhealth

10.01.2022 You have probably noticed that some people cope better than others when faced with setbacks the key difference is resilience. Resilience is the ability to respond to, recover and ‘bounce back’ after facing adversity or stress. Resilient people are able to utilise their skills and strengths to cope and recover from problems and challenges. Right now, a resilient workforce is essential for businesses to support continuity and survive. You can maintain and develop individual r...esilience in many ways. Here are Luemo's top tips: * Mental health hygiene is important. Eat healthy meals, exercise regularly and get enough sleep. * Develop clear and positive thought patterns. Use techniques such as meditating and journaling to clear your mind and sort through your thoughts. Connect with nature or your faith. Be aware of negative self talk and change the narrative. * Work on building and engaging in meaningful relationships. This can include family, friends, neighbours and colleagues. The absence of meaningful connection can lead to loneliness, which harbours a range of mental, physical and emotional health risks. * Identify your values, have goals and build your confidence. Spending time working on self improvement, your life purpose and your relationship with yourself is an investment in confidence and optimism for the future. * Disconnect from unhelpful consumption or practices. This might include over use of technology, over exposure to media, indulgence in stimulants, over use of food, or engagement in destructive relationships. Read the full article here:

09.01.2022 You don't need to be a trained counselor to be a helpful colleague or friend when someone is experiencing difficult times. R U OK? Day is one of the most prominent days for highlighting mental health in Australia. This year, make a point of getting your workplace involved. Here are Luemo's top tips for helping: RECOGNISE - look for changes in behaviour; don't ignore apparent problems.... EMPATHISE - approach them in private and tell them what you have observed. Ask if they are OK. Listen, don't judge, believe their perspective, don't try to give a solution. Ask them what they think they need. LEAD THEM TO THE RIGHT HELP - research options available. This could include workplace options, GP referred psychologist (free under medicare), private counselling or community services. Accepting help can be hard. You might have to try a few times. Tell them that you will check on them again and keep that promise.

06.01.2022 Do the right things - not just the fun things. "...tangible attempts to define a certain atmosphere cannot be held equivalent to the shared sense of purpose that drives each worker to show up and be part of something greater." #FastCompany #workplacewellbeing #workplacementalhealth #workplacewellness

06.01.2022 It's spring. So let's get back into movement! When we exercise, there are immediate and longer-term benefits for our mental state and wellbeing. It’s not just about helping control weight. 06.01.2022 "...labelling bullying can be tricky because it's classed as unreasonable behaviour. That means, there is a bit of a 'reasonable person' test." Addressing bullying behavior is imperative, but before that happens we must understand what it is, and is not. This article gives a good wrap up of what to look for and how to determine if behaviour is in fact bullying. #workplacementalhealth #workplacewellbeing #workplacewellness

04.01.2022 Optimism is powerful. Right now, leaders need to dig deep and call on the skills of the 'realistic optimist'. People who are optimistic generally have better health, incomes and life-quality including better mental health, friendships, jobs, relationships and more.... In the workplace, using the power of optimism to manage teams can lead to thriving outcomes. Optimistic leaders are not blind to adverse realities and do not ignore problems. Optimistic leaders have energy, acknowledge realities, articulate a positive vision, make realistic plans and unite the team to collectively reach the goal. Staff with optimistic attitudes look positively into the future and strive to create and achieve positive goals. They don’t let set-backs define who they are, they see potential in change and are enthusiastic about what tomorrow brings. Pessimists are damaging. No one wants to work with a pessimist and pessimistic leadership is destructive. Check yourself that you are not allowing pessimistic language, thoughts and behaviors into your day.

03.01.2022 "The same forces rocking businesses are also overwhelming employees, driving up their fear, and compromising their capacity." We need to reduce the fear and anxiety that is clouding good judgement. Instead of focusing on immediate performance we need to think about HOW we can get there. Psychological safety is paramount and one of the keys to immediate business survival, continuity and future growth. #workplacewellbeing #workplacewellness #workplacementalhealth #harvardbusinessreview

03.01.2022 Reactionary tactics just don't cut it. "Psychological injury claims increased by a whopping 53%...while claims for physical injuries only increased by 3.5%". Increased awareness of psychological injury, increased job expectations, connectivity, pace of change, loss of control and insecurity are driving growth in claims. The magnifying effect of COVID adds another layer of pressure. Proactive intervention is imperative - reactionary tactics just don't cut it. #luemoworkplacewellbeing

03.01.2022 Australia's relationship with alcohol is committed and complicated. We are one of the heaviest drinking cultures in the world and it is not only tolerated here, but commonly accepted, celebrated and held onto at all costs. How many times have you heard people readily offer up the admission that the only thing getting them through lockdown and home schooling is their daily tipple? Alcohol is one of those things that we think is great to help us relax, celebrate and support aff...able social interactions. In moderation alcohol can do these things however, alcohol also makes it difficult to get adequate sleep, it dulls our senses, can affect physical health and lead to overindulgence, relationship problems and addiction. Checking in on your drinking and ensuring you have alcohol free days is highly recommended and included in the Luemo Wellbeing Scorecard Challenge. https://luemo.com.au/re/balancing-your-wellbeing-scorecard/

02.01.2022 Do you want to be happier, have less stress and more clarity? Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. The therapeutic benefits of mindfulness include decreased stress, increased happiness and improved thought clarity and focus. There is no limit to situations when we can be mindful. In fact, mindfulness masters believe that mindfulness at all times is the goal as we go about our lives living each day intentionally and engaging in every experience. Is this possible in the modern world? https://luemo.com.au//20/09/newsletter-september-2020.pdf/
