This could be on your floor bringing light and happiness #crochet #floorcoverings #fibreart Artist statement: Conceptually this series is a reprieve from my PhD studies and the academic research related to my large-scale installation art practice. In a counterpoint to complex, large-scale, public art contexts, this series' focus is on comfort through tactility and immediacy. It explores the process of crochet as a cathartic, expressive "flow state". The colour treatment is inspired by concepts of pixilation as colour dissipates through changing hues. The permanency of material colour is explored in counterpoint to installation art approaches, whereby white yarn is used to facilitate ephemeral, technology-driven, light-based colour treatments. This highlights the impermanency of site-specific installations. In contrast, these rugs are tangible representations of textural colour - objectified instances of a cathartic, expressive and obsessive process. Works are made with 100% mixed fibres. They feature yarns collected from op-shops around Australia. This process of finding, collecting and assembling fibres into elaborate colour gradients is inspired by the methodology of Miriam Shapiro and Melissa Meyer, as articulated in their essay "Waste Not Want Not - An Inquiry Into What Women Saved and Assembled -- FEMMAGE" published 1977. The design seen here is titled 'Golden Brown'. This piece features a golden centre bordered by warm autumn tones of orange, brown and deep red. Dimensions: 80 x 80 Approx.
