15.01.2022 A picture's worth a thousand words. This is the reason we fight for our train. Not because it’s an interesting piece of shiny machinery. But because at the end ...of the day, all any of us want and need (from each other and our Government) is the ability to connect. To places, to opportunities, to services, to healthcare, to entertainment, to sport, to universities and most importantly, to the people we love. This is fundamental to our wellbeing. This picture was taken at Bendigo train station. A Sea Lake family had gone to meet their son and reunite him with his daughter for the school holidays. They would have preferred to meet in Donald or Birchip - or even better, Woomelang or Lascelles. But for 25 years, the Government has deemed this Sea Lake family and thousands of others in North West Victoria - unworthy of a passenger train service close to home. Something that is regarded as essential for every other major regional centre, is somehow seen as an extravagant, luxury for us. For 25 long years, the people of the North West have watched as both sides of Government have funded services and upgrades to everyone else’s train networks; have poured billions of dollars into dubious city-centric transport projects; and have baulked and stalled at every opportunity to correct the glaring inequity in our part of the State. If some members of our community are skeptical about the return of our train, it’s no wonder. But we're made of tough stuff. Any other community might have given up a long time ago, but we’ve fought and triumphed over bigger odds than this. With the right leadership, anything is possible. Especially given we have right on our side. Affordable, accessible public transport is one of the core functions of Government. It’s why we pay tax in the first place, so that everyone in the State (and nation) has a common baseline of essential services from which to build good, rewarding, productive lives for themselves and their families. Mildura and the Mallee Track need and deserve a train. We need a train for all the same practical reasons that every other regional centre has one. We need a train to demonstrate that we are valued by our State Government; that the $3 billion+ in Gross Regional Product we generate every year is recognised and valued. The current situation is nothing short of a scandal. Change the game on November 24. Vote #1 Ali Cupper Independent. See more

02.01.2022 25 YEARS AGO TODAY, MILDURA/MALLEE TRACK LOST ITS PASSENGER TRAIN, and along with it, a piece of its dignity and identity. For those who weren't there, or were ...too young to remember, here's how it happened (according to the Wikipedia archives) ... The withdrawal of The Vinelander service in 1993 occurred under controversial circumstances. Two days before the service was scheduled to be axed, intending passengers were on the platform at Spencer Street station, ready to board the train to Mildura, when it was announced that it had been cancelled due to a landslide along the track. Despite the very short notice of the cancellation, buses were conveniently available as an alternative. Suspicions about the supposed landslide story were aroused when it was noted that it hadn't blocked the Melbourne-bound Vinelander that same evening. A leaked document from the train controllers working that evening also aroused suspicion and an investigation revealed that the story about the landslide was a hoax. V/Line failed to give any clear explanation for their actions and it is widely believed that the sudden cancellation of the final Vinelander service was done to avoid any protests, such as the one that had taken place earlier at Bairnsdale, when the withdrawal of the service occurred as planned a couple of days later." Firstly, how’s that for a case study in contempt? Lying to us. Denying us the chance to protest. And only a few weeks ago, Kennett made it quite clear that nothing’s changed when he confirmed that it’s never crossed his mind whether we would get our train back. It’s irrelevant to him. Current Ministers and Shadow Ministers wouldn’t use such blunt language, but their actions speak to the same attitude: Mildura and Mallee aren’t worth it. The contempt for Mildura and Mallee is highlighted further when you consider that since 1993, passenger rail has been restored to Bairnsdale, Echuca, Maryborough and Ararat. Services were restored to these towns not because their trains made money. But because the people in these towns are respected as citizens of the State and therefore worthy of this vital essential service. Why are Mildura and Mallee still waiting? ISOLATION? Victoria is a geographically small State. State Governments around the country and the world build and service passenger rail lines across much longer distances. COST? Successive Victorian Governments have promised and delivered much more expensive infrastructure than this. LACK OF LOCAL INTEREST? In 7 weeks, more than 8000 people signed Julie and James' petition. LOW POPULATION? Three words: Destination Swan Hill. 25 years ago, the Government thought it could silence Mildura and Mallee with a little fib about a landslide, yet the city of Mildura and towns along the Mallee Track have run one of the most determined and sustained advocacy campaigns the State has ever seen. People are angry and have long memories. Not only does the train hold immense practical value to the people of the North West, but it’s also a symbol of our community's inherent worth and rightful place as a member of the State of Victoria. As a State election candidate, I am not going to promise you the train. I can’t do that. If I was elected and didn’t have the balance of power, I suspect the big parties the ALP and the Coalition - would continue their usual pattern of rejecting and neglecting the public transport needs of Mildura and the Mallee Track. But if I had the balance of power like our MP Peter Crisp did for four years, not long ago - I wouldn’t waste it. I would use it as a lever to end this 25-year scandal. I acknowledge the Andrews Government’s investment in track standardisation. I acknowledge the Victorian Coalition’s $80 million election commitment to upgrade the level crossings. But when the closest thing to a promise on restoration is, 'maybe we’ll do it if we win the next two elections', it's not sincere. Victoria has the money. Mildura and Mallee are worthy of the investment. If the big parties the Coalition and the ALP - don’t come through with an election commitment before November 24 to restore passenger rail in the next term of Government - vote them out. #wearevictorianstoo #demandmorenov24 #changethegame #alicupperindependent #mildura #springst
