23.01.2022 Meet Bill. Here he is 69 years old and has been a truck driver for 28 years. This photo shows the sun damage done to the left side of his face from UVA rays transmitted through the window glass We usually think of sun damage as something that happens at the beach. Sun damage is cumulative. Much of the sun damage we accumulate over a life time is incidental. Hanging out the washing, sitting at a bus stop, taking a trip to the coffee shop, a short walk in the park or around ...the block, walking in and out of the grocery store, or the gym. Anywhere you go UV will damage unprotected skin. And it just keeps adding up. Sun exposure repeated over time damages the DNA of our skin, and also affects our collagen and elastin - the building blocks of bouncy skin. This is also why it’s important to not have any sun exposure whilst you are having advanced in clinic treatments. Investing in treatments to rebuild and create collagen, sun exposure is undoing them just as quickly as your skin is working to make it See more

16.01.2022 Fake it, don’t bake it. A tan is a sign of skin cells in trauma from UV damage not a sign of healthy skin. One damaged cell is all it takes to start a melanoma growing. There is a healthy way to get a tan, and that’s in a bottle. Always Slip Slop Slap Seek Slide
15.01.2022 Holy Moley! We have dedicated our social media this month to sharing facts surrounding melanoma, skin cancer, your skin and the sun. Melanoma Awareness Month is held in May and this is something very close to home and dear to our hearts Gem's Mum, Jenny passed away in September 2017 from Metastatic Melanoma. We see A LOT of skin and one of our core values is education, we believe we change lives by changing skin, and part of this is raising awareness about skin cancer. We ...went and got our skin checked last week, and we urge you to do the same. Gem has a spot she needs to keep an eye on, and I have sun damaged lips, and as the Doctor said, the lips are not a nice place to have things cut out of A big thank you to @melanomainstituteau and @gameonmole for these fab t-shirts and your ongoing research and development. Game On Mole is a call to action for everyone to be aware of changes to their skin, especially moles. Early detection saves lives. It's time to take your skin seriously. Love Kristy + Gem xo See more
14.01.2022 A little bit of magic (and science!) Applying sunscreen and seeing what it looks like when using our skin analysis system with the UV observation mode Like a visible forcefield of UV-blocking black cream, it’s a demonstration of how sunscreen protects our skin from the sun’s damaging rays, and why it’s important to wear it daily.
12.01.2022 The great sunscreen debate! Chemical vs Physical. The two types of sunscreen depend on the ingredients used and the mechanism of action. Each option has their unique pros and cons, and products can contain both! The chemical sunscreen ingredients absorb and soak up UVA and UVB rays like a sponge, convert it to heat and dissipate it through the skin. Chemical sunscreens contain ingredients such as Butyl Methoxy Dibenzoylmethane, Oxybenzone, Octocrylene, and 4-Methylbenzyl...idene camphor. Physical sunscreen ingredients work on reflection and scatter UV away from the skin, in much the same way as clothing does. Active ingredients in physical sunscreen are Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. Chemical sunscreens are great for leaving little to no residue, however the synthetic ingredients they contain can result in allergies, irritation and oxidative stress. Physical sunscreen is less likely to irritate skin, and is a better option for those prone to heat-activated skin conditions such as Rosacea. It can however feel heavy and appear chalky on the skin. Both Chemical and Physical Sunscreens are equally as effective, they just work in different ways See more

09.01.2022 The sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation is both the major cause of skin cancer and the best source of vitamin D. A balance is required between excessive sun exposure which increases the risk of skin cancer and enough sun exposure to maintain adequate vitamin D levels. Vitamin D forms in the skin as a result of exposure to the UVB wavelengths in sunlight, but there is limited evidence available on the amount of UVB required to maintain adequate vitamin D levels. On the other hand..., there is considerable evidence showing that excessive sun exposure causes skin cancer and eye damage. Research suggests that prolonged sun exposure does not cause vitamin D levels to continue to increase further, but does increase the risk of skin cancer. Short periods (of a few minutes) of sun exposure may be more efficient at producing vitamin D than long periods, and daily exercise also assists the body to produce vitamin D. When the UV index is above 3 (all states during summer and some states in winter months), you should use sun protection measures if you are outdoors for more than a few minutes. In winter, longer exposure times are needed preferably around midday. In autumn or winter, in states where the UV index is below 3 for most of the day sun protection isn't needed. You can check the UV index via the Cancer Council Website or myuv.com.au. Ninety per cent of vitamin D is made from sunlight exposure directly on to the skin (not through glass). Only about 10 per cent of vitamin D comes from food sources such as oily fish, fortified milk and egg yolks. If you are concerned about your vitamin D levels, speak to your doctor who may advise supplementation. See more

09.01.2022 When we recommend products that provide your UV protection, foundation is not one of them! Makeup with SPF is amazing, but it is not a replacement for your primary UV protection products. The Cancer Council of Australia recommends applying 5 mls (or a full teaspoon) of sunscreen to your face, neck and ears for adequate protection. In order to achieve the sunscreen SPF on the makeup label, you would need to use 7 times the thickness you would normally use if using a liquid fou...ndation, and 14 times the amount if using a powder foundation. Probably not the look you were going for SPF is not an equation - you can not use an SPF 15 in your BB cream, and an SPF 15 in your mineral powder and get SPF 30. Your sun protection is only as strong as your highest SPF, which in this case would be 15. Always use a dedicated UV protection product with a minimum SPF 30 then apply your foundation where needed See more
04.01.2022 Do you REALLY need to wear sunscreen on rainy days? YES!! Always YES! If it’s cloudy, rainy or cold outside, it’s easy to assume you are safe! Clouds filter out sunlight but not UV rays. The Skin Cancer Foundation says that clouds block as little as 20% of UV rays. UV rays are independent of temperature - they don’t just disappear because it’s not beach weather
02.01.2022 Get ready, LUMA Skin Shop launching TOMORROW Bright, bouncy skin is just a click away!
01.01.2022 Fair skin, light eye colour and light or red hair does make you more susceptible to skin cancer BUT having darker skin tones does not mean you can’t get skin cancer.
