25.01.2022 Check out the enthusiastic guest educator who appeared in The Nest this week - blackboard and all! It was great to see him so confidently teaching his friends about a spelling pattern that he had just discovered in a Literacy workshop. We are so grateful for the joy and laughter that our wonderful children bring us every day!
25.01.2022 Today is the International Day for Universal Access to Information. This day highlights the right that all humans have to access information, in order to increase transparency and accountability in democratic societies. This is an issue that our older children investigated and solved for in one of our all time favourite Lumineer projects. Children discovered that people in marginalised communities, such as refugees and people experiencing homelessness often face many blocker...s in accessing information, including being able to utilise the services at local libraries. Ever the solution-focused team, our Lumineers connected with a range of organisations across Melbourne to learn more about these communities, and set to work creating mobile libraries to place in shared spaces. Once the libraries were complete, the children and educators loaded them up into trucks and delivered them to their new homes across Melbourne. One of the groups spent hours meticulously setting up their library that was filled with children's books for families to read and enjoy together. As soon as they stepped away, a bunch of young children flocked to the library and began enthusiastically pulling books off the shelves to read. As our children turned around to watch this scene unfold, we saw them realise the impact that they had on this community - what a powerful experience!
21.01.2022 At Lumineer we understand the importance of seeking feedback, as well as moving quickly to make iterations and improvements based on this feedback. Recently we observed that our littlest Lumineers needed increased opportunities for hands on learning to keep them engaged while working remotely. We embraced the opportunity to make iterations to our program to solve for this problem. As a result, "Project Day" was born. What does this mean? Well every week on a Wednesday, our c...hildren engage in our Design Process. They are currently working with educators to design projects and build prototypes. Then, towards the end of the term, they will pitch and send their products to real people in the world. We are thrilled that our first Project Day was a hit, and we can't wait for the next one!

20.01.2022 Even during remote learning we get our hands dirty! Here some of our children are learning how to use clay via Zoom with our artist in residence Zory. They are making sculptures that will help create a sense of joy and build connections between the gardeners at a local Community Garden.
20.01.2022 Children in The Nest (Year 2/3) have been learning about using the power of images to persuade an audience. They have been using apps to create digital images to express their point of view. This incredible artwork was created in response to the prompt, 'Landfill is bad for the environment.'
19.01.2022 At Lumineer Academy we pride ourselves on creating authentic learning experiences for our children. At the moment a group of our Lumineers are designing and making products to sell, with all profits from their sales being invested in the amazing social enterprise - Kiva Children were required to put together a financial plan, listing all of their expected costs, before putting in a loan application to "The Bank" (in this instance, "The Bank" just happens to be their parents)! They will need to pay back their loan to "The Bank" before investing their profits in KIVA. We got a huge kick out of seeing these very serious emails back from "The Bank" to approve these loans - we are so lucky to have such fun and engaged parents in our community!
19.01.2022 How do we create community spaces that are socially sustainable? These interactive park benches, 'pay it forward' stations, tool sharing hubs and fairy houses are on their way to Cultivating Community gardens across Melbourne to bring joy and social connectedness to the gardeners. We are super proud of our amazing children and all of the projects they have actioned to send out to community this week!
18.01.2022 Do you ever wish you could bring the characters and stories from your favourite books and movies to life? Well today at Lumineer, we did just that! For our second Tools Down Day, children spent the morning working in multi-age groups via Zoom in a range of creative workshops. There was puppet making, collaging, storytelling and story writing, composing soundtracks to our favourite stories, and even cooking meals inspired by our favourite books...did someone say Green Eggs and... Ham? Some children (and educators) even got into the spirit of the day by dressing up as their favourite characters, or getting comfy in their PJs. Have you shared a story with a loved one lately? We challenge you to sit down and read, watch or tell a story with someone you love. We guarantee it will bring a smile to your face!
16.01.2022 Today is R U OK? Day. We spent time together in our Community Muster this morning checking in with each other. Have you checked in with your loved ones today? Artwork by one of our amazingly talented educators- Annie! R U OK Day
13.01.2022 Our Foundation children, have been developing their social and emotional skills as they learn to work together in design teams. Our creative educators were able to facilitate this remotely by using a digital whiteboard for children to collaborate on a shared artwork. Through this experience our Foundation children practised communicating clearly, listening to others and reaching a shared consensus when making decisions about their artwork. We think it's fair to say they nailed it!
13.01.2022 Our recent Tools Down Day gave us a chance to welcome some special activators. Noah and Kat Barlow joined us on Zoom to talk about their incredible Voices Podcast. Noah and Kat have been reading stories to children at the Royal Children's Hospital for years. Kat noticed that when children are sick in hospital, often their families cannot stay with them at night, so these kids miss the opportunity to hear great bedtime stories! Kat was solution focused and started the podcast ...to connect creative storytellers of all ages, to children in hospital. Our Lumineers were given the opportunity to record their own original stories and be part of this very special podcast. These stories can be enjoyed by people of all ages. You can find the podcast here: https://open.spotify.com/show/2OLjomyNDOzOUDYQXYLEpC Thanks so much for joining us Kat Barlow Empowerment Ethos and Noah Barlow. We are very grateful that we were able to connect with you on this amazing project!
11.01.2022 Today, more than half the people in the world live in an urban area. By 2050, it is predicted that this number will rise to 70% of the world’s population. Our educators have been busy equipping our Year 4, 5 and 6 children with knowledge and skills to create change in these urban spaces by improving economic, environmental and social sustainability. At the beginning of the term, children had the chance to opt in to one of two projects. The first project has seen children work...ing with MGS Architects who are currently involved in working towards the Future Melbourne Strategy. These children have been using a range of skills to redesign an area of Spotswood to make it more environmentally, economically and socially sustainable. As they moved through our design process, they considered how to factor in renewable energy systems, maintain heritage sites, incorporate Indigenous principles, and rethink public transport systems in order to improve the design of their urban area. We are hoping that MGS will be able to consider the elements of our designs into their plans for the future of Melbourne! The second project saw our children teaming up with Cultivating Communities to create an outdoor item that encourages social interaction. Many of the patrons of Cultivating Communities speak different languages, and therefore find it hard to interact. Our solution focused children have been busy designing and building amazing pieces of furniture that will find a home in a local community garden, where they will be used to spark joy, encourage communication and enhance a sense of community. This week our children will be presenting their incredible designs to MGS Architects and Cultivating Communities via Zoom, and their amazing furniture will be delivered as soon as restrictions allow!

06.01.2022 On Tools Down Day yesterday, some of the children decided to use their visual art skills to bring the characters from their favourite books to life. Check out these awesome puppets and collages! It was so great to see our children (and educators) having fun and sharing their playful creations with each other!
05.01.2022 Woohoo!! Our third Tools Down Day went off with a bang! We celebrated the end of another rewarding Term full of learning and growing together at Lumineer. Being remote didn't stop us partying in true Lumineer style. There were pinatas being made, treats being cooked, houses being decorated, and games being played all throughout our amazing community. We even managed to hold a Zoom dance-off, where lots of our very best dance moves were on show. ... We are so proud of the resilience, persistence, optimism and determination our entire community has shown during this challenging time - what a team!
04.01.2022 Lumineer families were cooking up a storm yesterday! They took to the kitchen to whip up meals and other delicious creations inspired by their favourite stories. We even saw Garfield's favourite lasagne and Little Red Riding Hood recreated in cookie form. If there was ever a time we wished we could smell or taste through our computer screens, yesterday was certainly it. Reflecting on our Tools Down Day, there was an overwhelming positive feeling. One child even remarked, "The only feedback I have is that we should have Tools Down Day everyday!"
03.01.2022 This term our Early Years children have been engaging in a Learning Exploration about systems of weather. As part of this they took a look at how people and animals can be affected by extreme weather conditions. Some of the children were lucky to be able to connect with Rhonda from Latitude: Directions for Young People to learn about how the weather can impact people who are experiencing homelessness. She spoke about how some people experiencing homelessness can't carry a lo...t of their belongings and may only have 1 or 2 changes of clothing. These items sometimes get soaked when it rains because they don't have somewhere to store them! This means they can find it difficult to stay dry, which can lead to a range of health problems. Our children worked on designing and creating possible solutions for this problem including waterproof bags and socks. Today the team presented their designs to Rhonda via Zoom, we were incredibly proud of how confident and brave they were as they explained their designs!
02.01.2022 This term in the Nest we explored the concept of discovery. We took a deep dive into why people are driven to discover and explore new places, ideas, and ways of doing things. Through this we learnt that the main reasons people are driven to discover is because they are innately curious, or because they need to solve a problem. Children were then given the choice of opting into one of two projects based on these drivers. The first problem we solved for was that over half of ...our population lives on less than $2.50 a day. We worked with the children to find out what it means to make a contribution to social change, and how micro-financing is being used by organisations like Kiva to empower people and communities around the world. To contribute to solving this problem, children then designed and made products to sell at a community auction. They worked through an extensive loan process with "the bank" (their parents), with the idea being that they would need to pay back their loan before being able to invest their profits with Kiva. This process helped our kids learn about loans, costs and profit margins, as well as the impact of investing rather than donating to create social change. Through this process our Lumineers raised almost $700 to invest in the Kiva projects of their choice when we return to school in Term 4 - how cool is that?
02.01.2022 Extreme weather doesn't just affect humans! The rest of our little Lumineers have been busy designing and creating for birds who have lost their homes due to extreme weather conditions (for example, the bushfires earlier this year). This group connected with Friends of Brisbane Ranges to learn about how the bushfires impacted on these animals, and what materials and structures they could use in their designs to help birds to feel safe. The children then worked through our de...sign process to build some amazing new homes for the birds in their backyards and local area. They have also written letters to deliver to their neighbours encouraging them to build similar bird boxes, so that even more birds can be protected! Today this group spent time reflecting on the design process together. Children shared how they felt when faced with a blocker and how they solved problems and worked through challenges. We are so proud of their innovative use of materials, and the thought they put into their designs.
02.01.2022 This afternoon some of our Year 4/5 and 6 children presented their model redesigns of Spotswood to a hugely impressed Will, Audrey and Rob from MGS Architects. The team made comment that they were amazed at the level of thought that had gone into each design, and how each child had approached the task in a unique way. Rob mentioned: "I was blown away by the way that, as a group, you dealt with some complex issues and bought them together. For every design, there was a real sense of wanting to bring communities together, closer to nature, and sustainably." We are incredibly proud of the effort and consideration that the Forest team put into this project - the results speak for themselves. Thanks for collaborating with us MGS! https://mgsarchitects.com.au
