01.01.2022 Always was, always will be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. It acknowledges and celebrates that our nations story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 with Captain James Cook, or in 1606 with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula but instead has a rich history dating back tens of thousands of years. The very first footprints on this continent... were those belonging to First Nations people This photo is of when I lived in a remote aboriginal community called Gunbalanya (also known as Oenpelli) in Arnhem Land. I was lucky enough to get invited to go out with some of the Daluk (ladies) and learn traditional skills passed down from generations. Here we are collecting pandanus as well as plants to make natural dyes. It is such a lengthy process and the talent that these women have is amazing. @kathleenrnettlefold #naidoc2020 #naidocweek #naidocweek2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe #arnhemland
