22.01.2022 So many of us have trouble sleeping at night. In fact, recent stats show that 1 in 3 suffer from insomnia. Chronic insomnia may need the help of prescription medication, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and other types of formal treatment. For some people, practicing healthy lifestyle habits have shown to be highly beneficial to reducing their insomnia symptoms. Research suggests that people with untreated insomnia are at 2-10 times greater risk for new or ...recurrent episodes of depression and anxiety. Here are some tried-and-true ways to up your sleep tally: Limiting or eliminating naps, especially late in the day Restricting the use of alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco products in the evening Avoiding late-night meals Limiting screentime prior to bedtime Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regularly during the day Follow a consistent sleep schedule that includes the same bedtimes and wake-up times every day To eliminate visual distractions a sleep mask is a useful addition as it provides sensory deprivation and reduces the amount of light entering your eyes. Light at night has been shown to suppress the production of melatonin which is our major sleep hormone. Using a sleep mask guarantees a dark atmosphere wherever you sleep. Do you wear a sleep mask? 21.01.2022 There feels like there’s a lot going on in the world at the moment, especially for our WA friends who I know a lot of our community is. So I wanted to share this great technique that can help bring you back into the present moment: Take a few slow breaths and ask yourself:... 1. What are three things I can hear? 2. What are three things I can see? 3. What are three things I can feel? 4. What are three things that I can smell? 5. What are three things I can taste? Use one sense at a time to think of these answers. Use this exercise to bring yourself back into the present moment. Let me know in the comments below how you’re going credit: @hautestockco See more

20.01.2022 You know that feeling when you hop into bed. You put your head down on the pillow and you start replaying all the days events in your mind. Then fast forward and you start thinking about all you’ve got to do tomorrow and the next day. ... Depending on what this brings up for you, you either feel overwhelmed or excited about what’s ahead. One of the things that I’ve found so beautifully nourishing is when laying in bed on my Lunalux pillowcase I take a mindful moment to feel the softness of the silk against my skin. It’s resting on a big fluffy cloud. So completely soft. That visceral feeling calms my nervous system and brings me back into my body especially when I may be feeling stressed and/or overwhelmed. There’s this part to my product that could get overlooked but I really REALLY want this to be noticed! Let the softness of the silk hold you and nurture you! Give yourself that mindful moment to allow yourself to let go of the worries and overwhelms of the day and have them wash over you. x See more

19.01.2022 Vitamin D is sometimes called the sunshine vitamin because it’s produced in your skin in response to sunlight Vitamin D has several important functions. Perhaps the most vital are regulating the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, and facilitating normal immune system function. It is also vital for normal growth and development of bones and teeth, as well as improved resistance against certain diseases. Did you know that low levels o...f Vit D can also effect your sleep? Researchers aren’t sure how vitamin D affects sleep (yet). What we do know is that raising vitamin D levels is associated with better sleep quality. It’s been found in a study that those with low levels experienced poor quality sleep and slept for less than 5 hours. With many places having been in lockdown or restricted access to outside, no doubt many of us will be low in Vit D at the moment. To up your vit D levels try to get out into the sun for at least 20 mins a day and if you’re having troubles sleeping (or other health issues) make sure to chat to your GP. Have you had your Vit D levels checked lately? credit: @allyaide See more

08.01.2022 Stress and sleep are closely linked, infact stress and anxiety can lead to insomnia and sleep problems, and vice versa - a lack of proper rest can contribute to your stress levels. By addresses one of these issues, it’ll often lead to an improvement in the other. We all know that feeling when you hop into bed after a rough day, and you toss and turn for hours on end... Managing your stress levels throughout your day and doing things such as eating well, getting enough exercise throughout the week, doing controlled breathing can all help you to release stress and help you to get a good nights sleep. Having a good sleep hygiene is paramount so if you’re feeling stressed and not sleeping well, give these a try! Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. 06.01.2022 All the time Anyone else?

05.01.2022 I’ve always been an avid reader. I remember being a young kid and reading in bed till all hours of the night. I actually used to wish when I was older that I could have a library in my house! #goals However over time life got busy and when bed time came I found my mind was way to tired to read. It probably was just what I needed though now I know what the research says!... A study by the University of Sussex showed that reading before bed could lower stress levels and significantly help you relax. It was found that reading a book can reduce stress levels by 68% and it actually works better at reducing stress levels than listening to music (61%), drinking tea or coffee (54%) and taking a walk (42%). It only took 6 minutes for participants stress levels to be reduced! Reading a good book gives your mind a chance to go somewhere else for a little while, leaving your troubles behind. It also leaves you feeling calmer by allowing your muscles to relax and slowing down your breathing. Note however reading on your phone or your iPad may have an adverse effect with the blue light that emits from the devices, so best to turn to a good old fashioned book that you can hold! Do you read before bed? Do you find it helps you sleep? credit: @candiceperrin See more

04.01.2022 R U OK? These 3 words can make all the difference to someone’s life. It’s not just today that we need to ask this question but every day. Life as most have known it has certainly changed this year and there’s been a lot of uncertainty in the world. No doubt this has created much anxiety for people as we all try to navigate these changes. ... As someone who has previously suffered from depression and anxiety, I know all too well that dark all consuming black hole. It’s important that we all start to talk about mental health, just like we do our physical health. Nobody is immune to feeling the struggles of life and some feel it more so than others. If you’re struggling please talk to someone. Reach out and ask for help. Don’t stay in that black hole by yourself. And if you notice a friend or family member is not acting like themselves, no matter if the change is small or big, trust the signs, trust your gut and please be brave enough to ask them if they are okay. By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. One conversation is what it could take to save a life. The RU OK website has some great guides on how to make your conversation with someone meaningful and what you can say and do when someone says they are not okay. Go to www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask and have a read today, so that you’ll be prepared. So, are you ok? Let’s start a conversation. Have the courage to break the silence.
