11.01.2022 Grispelle: Italian potato-based doughnut A close up of three freshly made Grispelle, doughnuts that originated in southern Italy, still made in Australia. Gris...pelle are a doughnut from southern Italy.(ABC Life: Lisa Clarke) What: Grispelle comes from the Calabria region of southern Italy and can be eaten with a cinnamon-sugar blend, dipped in honey, or just on their own. Without any sweeteners, they're quite savoury and have a slightly crispy exterior. Where: Find them at your local Italian bakery and look out for them at festivals, like the La Fiera Italian Festival in regional Victoria. How to: It doesn't matter what kind of potato you use, as long as they're older potatoes. The water content of the potato determines how much flour you need to use, and the less flour you use, the softer and tastier the end result will be. Encouraging the next generation to make grispelle hasn't been a problem for Italian families in Myrtleford, Victoria. "In the old days a lot of families used to make them at home especially for special occasions," Peter Sacco says. Peter is a member of the Circolo Calabrese, a community group located in North East Victoria that wants to keep their history alive. Peter holds onto his Italian heritage with both hands, especially when it comes to the tradition of the grispelle. "Because they're so much work to make, you get a few families together to make them." Two men stand by a deep fryer as they cook Grispelle, Italian doughnuts, together. Frank and Pat Marotta use a homemade fryer to make hundreds of grispelle for Christmas.(ABC Life: Lisa Clarke) Peter's own children carefully help Frank Marotta and brother Pat at the fryer a converted barbeque. "Look at the multi-generations happening here around the fryer. It's pretty amazing," Peter says. For the group, the effort of making them is worth it for the next generation, because you can't just buy grispelle at the supermarket.

04.01.2022 Hi Everyone, We are a small family run wine tourism business in Porepunkah, near Bright VIC. Our region has been surrounded by the Abbeyard and Mt Buffalo fire...s since January 3. The valley has been blanketed in smoke this whole time, until this morning when it rained!!!! We are a tourist region, tourism is our major employer and the first two weeks of Jan are our peak season. We are excited that all of the warnings have been lifted and it is safe to come back! There is plenty of accommodation available in the region for the long weekend and we'll be open for tastings from 12 - 5 every day. If you can't make it to Porepunkah, the online store is also open. We can send a little of our region to you! www.ringerreef.com.au

02.01.2022 My name is Leesa and along with my husband Jim and 4 children we own Bastoni Pizzeria in the beautiful town of Myrtleford in North East Victoria. Since the bush...fires and evacuation of tourists our busiest time of year has now seen our town become deserted which has affected our small community emotionally and financially. I guess all I ask is that you return to our town and support all the businesses so we can continue to offer a wide range of awesome restaurants and shops and great service. We will all be very happy to see you! See more
