20.01.2022 CITIZENSHIP BILL LATEST NEWS Last weeks there was news that Immigration Minister Peter Dutton's controversial crackdown on Australian citizenship appeared doomed, with the crucial Nick Xenophon Team declaring it wouldn't support it.... The surprise position from the Nick Xenophon Team , whose votes are essential for the government to pass any bill opposed by Labor and the Greens, will force the Turnbull government to dump the proposal or go back to the drawing board. It is understood Liberal Party senators have also expressed reservations about some aspects of Mr Dutton's bill.

20.01.2022 JUST 2 HOURS AGO IT WAS REPORTED ON THE ABC Citizenship laws: Government in fight to pass tough new rules after Labor resolves to block changes. The Coalition is facing a battle to get its citizenship overhaul through Parliament after Labor declared it would vote against the changes.... Key points: Under proposed changes to the citizenship test migrants would be asked to "prove their commitment to Australia" Opposition spokesman Tony Burke called the changes "bizarre" and said Labor would not support the changes The Coalition will look to the crossbench to support its proposal The ALP caucus met this morning and formally resolved to block the citizenship legislation in its current form. The Greens have already vowed they will also vote no, which means the Government will now have to negotiate with the Senate crossbench in order to make it law. Obviously, it is early days and we will have to wait for the outcome but it is looking a little promising for anyone who is looking to apply for citizenship under the old rules.

17.01.2022 With all the new rules finally in place a lot of aspiring visa applicants are realising that most visas to Australia now have unachievable requirements and gaining a pathway to work and live in Australia is getting harder and harder. The new rules have limited the ways and increased the costs for Australian Businesses to access offshore skills so it will be interesting to see whether Australia’s appetite for offshore skills was a supply and demand issue or just driven by avai...Continue reading

05.01.2022 CITIZENSHIP BILL THE LATEST 18th OCTOBER IS THE DAY!!!! On Wednesday, 13 September 2017, Senator McKim moved a motion in the Senate to have consideration of the Australian Citizenship Legislation Amendment (Strengthening the Requirements for Australian Citizenship and Other Measures) Bill 2017 discharged from the Senate Notice Paper.... Senator Lambie, moved to amend the motion and her amendment was carried. Senator McKim's motion, as amended, was carried and reads: That if, by 18 October 2017, the government business order of the day relating to the consideration of the Australian Citizenship Legislation Amendment (Strengthening the Requirements for Australian Citizenship and Other Measures) Bill 2017, has not been finally considered, the order of the day shall be discharged from the Notice Paper. If the Citizenship Bill cannot be passed by that date the Government would need to reintroduce the Bill. Get your Citizenship applications in now to beat the rush!!!

04.01.2022 The Department of Home Affairs has published their first round of SkillSelect invitations for the new Financial/Program year and it’s not looking good. The first round of invitations was sent on 11th July 2018 to potential applicants. Home Affairs now sends invitations on the 11th of each month and have stated that this will not impact the number of invitations issued. The July figures don’t seem to show this.... July 2018 figures published on Home Affairs website list the following: Total Invitations Issued for July 2018 = 1010 By comparison, July 2017 figures published on Home Affairs Website list the following: Total Invitations issued for July 2017 = 2210 Based on these figures, the skilled migration intake is halved. Upon release of Federal Budget in May this year, the Government confirmed that immigration numbers will remain unchanged. In 201819, the planning figure for the Migration Program remains unchanged at 190,000 visas, marking the seventh consecutive year this figure has been used. This was announced in the Regional Australia ministerial budget statement, unlike in past years where the figure was in the Department of Home Affairs Portfolio Budget Statement. This continues the highest planning level on record The comparison does not show this. So the second round of invitations, issued on 11 August, which is yet to be made available to the public will need to have at least 3000 invitations to make up for July shortfall. I’ll be interested to see the figures when they are released.

02.01.2022 The day has come. It has been a long wait for what in hindsight seems obvious. The proposed Australian Citizenship Legislation Amendment (Strengthening the Requirements for Australian Citizenship and Other Measures) Bill 2017 has been struck from parliamentary business, effectively defeating the proposed amendments. When and how DIBP will start working through the back log that this has created is unknown but as news comes to hand I will inform you.
