25.01.2022 And now for something completely different a little Gen X in-joke (via Freelance Jungle, thanks Bek)

23.01.2022 If you're an ABC Book Show regular you'll know this is coming up next week. Or you could listen to it at your leisure here. Looks great, can't wait (think I'll be listening in advance.)

22.01.2022 Curious about the authoreditor relationship? Brisbane Writers Festival will be doing a series of author-editor conversations, starting with Mem Fox and her editor Jane Covernton in Feb.

22.01.2022 Congratulations to Keegan Luiters for your first book and thanks for the kind words.

21.01.2022 Top score on another big night in...

21.01.2022 oh happy ho ho it's all over for the year here at Lu Sexton Wordsmith. Hope you have a relaxing and rejuvenating break... especially all you Melbourne folk who have a lot to recover from (I don't know about you but I am still a bit emotionally wrung out from that mega lock-down). PS. picture taken in my very own lounge room some years ago when Ken and Barbie kindly agreed to pose for a slightly risqué Christmas card shoot for me.

21.01.2022 I've written a guest post for Kath Walters who helps experts write books.

20.01.2022 Music to my ears. (PS the navigation tip Lana mentions is my little document map how-to video - which I also posted last week on fb - nice to see it doing its job.)

19.01.2022 Black Inc book sale! I just bought 'Growing up African in Australia' and 'Salt' by Bruce Pascoe. Something to look forward to in these lockdown groundhog days.

19.01.2022 Hmmm, not really helping... (of course there’s the link to the root word bit this still gave me a chuckle)

17.01.2022 YA and children's writers, could this be your year?

17.01.2022 Fuzzy-but-friendly how-to video 4 - how to do a partial word count and a nifty way to select slabs of text. (This one has a slightly embarrassing plug for my work-in-progress You Tube channel, but don't go rushing out ... I've posted my entire repertoire [of four videos!] here).

16.01.2022 hmmm the LinkedIn algorithm is a bit off this morning

15.01.2022 For the essayists out there

14.01.2022 Good people I need your opinion. Which header image do you like best for a new page on my website for my writing coaching service? The tea cup* (to evoke the idea of having a chat with a friend about your book) or the buds (to evoke the idea of budding writer). Thanks in advance. * if the teacup wins I'll adjust the background for legibility

14.01.2022 For writers in Darebin, their annual literary magazine, n-scribe, is open for submissions. I was on the selection panel a few years ago when I was living in the hood, it's a great publication. A little different this year due to You Know What.

14.01.2022 that time of the year again...

12.01.2022 Here’s a little bit of Monday lovely for you

11.01.2022 Writer’s life... love this post by the author of ‘The Boy from the Mish ‘, which I’m reading as we speak

09.01.2022 Working with an author is an intense and demanding experience, but ultimately rewarding. Especially when you get to see the finished product and how proud they are...congratulations Dr Jenny Brockis.

09.01.2022 So if you are thinking about writing a business book, this is an excellent place to start. Kelly Irving really knows her stuff... (and it's free)

08.01.2022 Table of contents anyone? Fuzzy-but-friendly how-to video three

08.01.2022 Something to aim for?

08.01.2022 Your Friday Funny! LO'L!

06.01.2022 The morning after another big night in lockdown style. We’re (hopefully) at the half-way mark Melbourne. Hang in there and don’t forget, while the numbers are very concerning for all the people they represent and affect, it doesn’t mean the lockdown isn’t working. The reproduction number is going down. X

05.01.2022 Hooray Victoria, mini lockdown lifted tonight! And also hooray to Jess Tayel for this great achievement...

05.01.2022 Sometimes I need to deliver the unwelcome news to authors that there’s more work to do than they’d hoped. It’s gratifying to receive feedback like this when I do...

04.01.2022 'His features never sharp and clear like his mind - resemble a collapsed cake into which misery has been stirred.' Rose Tremain, ‘Music and Silence’

03.01.2022 New non-fiction prize by Island magazine

03.01.2022 I love receiving these emails - the last line is my goal for mini-appraisals. (Image is a screenshot of an email that says ‘Hi Lu, thank you so much for sending me the link to the recording. I really enjoyed the workshop and found it very helpful. I really appreciate all your feedback and suggestions. I’ve been doing character exercises as you suggested and am enjoying that process and it’s helping me to develop my characters more. I would love to book in another session whe...n I finish the draft if not before, but I’ll see how I go with it. Thank you again I’m feeling much more voted motivated to finish this book! :-)

02.01.2022 Excellent tip that may come in handy.

01.01.2022 Another interesting small publisher to keep an eye on. They've been around for a while but are new to me.

01.01.2022 If you've been meaning to buy this, July is a great month to do so. $2 per book goes to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation
