23.01.2022 Great to see students of all ages making a positive difference to the lives of others. These young people raised $260 at the FOLS Christmas Markets last week and have purchased toys to put under the ‘Wishing Trees’ at Kmart as gifts for those children in need in our community. Serving, giving and learning at LORDS.

23.01.2022 This week Year 7A and 7B History classes engaged in a variety of interactive learning opportunities connected to their study of Ancient Egypt. Students were building pyramids from Lego, deciphering hieroglyphs, finding missing mummies in tombs, solving Egyptian puzzles and being part of a virtual tour of The Museum of Scotland. Learning and fun at its best!
23.01.2022 Earlier this week, students in Years 5 and 9 participated in a StartSmart, Smart Earning session. For Year 9, the topics included how to navigate first jobs, how to determine what your pay should be, checking your payslips and what questions to ask during a job interview. In this engaging learning opportunity, our students explored financial concepts and topics relevant to adolescents navigating the world of first jobs and earning their own money. Year 5s discussed See it..., Earn it and Save it. They offered lots of ideas for different ways they could earn money and start up their own businesses, such as creating and selling crafts. They discussed how to come up with a catchy business name to sell a product or service. They learned about savings and interest and credit. Year 5s will be applying their new understandings to their Project-Based Learning unit, in which they are creating a business to sell handmade crafts at a market stall later this year as a fundraiser for the Thmei Village Pond Project. 20.01.2022 Congratulations to Kira J, our highest graded graduate in 2020, who has received a ‘Certificate of Academic Commendation for A grades in at least six general subjects’ from the Queensland Curriculum & Assessment Authority (QCAA). This is an incredible feat, put in perspective by the knowledge that 49,600 students graduated with only 983 students achieving this level of acknowledgment. Well done Kira!

19.01.2022 On Friday this week, we will be holding our annual Japanese Culture Day in the Junior School. These are some of the exciting activities we have planned for our Kindy and Prep students. Hachimaki Hachimaki is a Japanese head sash that is worn on special occasions such as sports days. The students will make their own and wear them for the Japanese ball games. Ball Games... Undoukai is the word for sports day in Japan. Prep and Year 1 will be playing two undoukai games; tamaire and korogashi. Tamaire is a game where students throw smaller balls into a basket. The team that lands the most balls in the basket wins. Korogashi is a game where students have to work as a team to move a really large ball to the finish line. Japanese Flag Biscuits Students are making and then enjoying eating Japanese flag biscuits out of arrowroot biscuits, white icing and raspberry lollies. It's going to be a fun way to end Term 3!
19.01.2022 A great way to add some fun to the last day of term was the staff adding Hawaiian shirts to their dress code today. The students enjoyed seeing their teachers looking a little more casual than usual.

18.01.2022 Year 10 Japanese students reflected on the importance of a packed lunch today as they created their own ‘obento’, or Japanese-style lunch box. Currently investigating Family Roles and Relationships, the students were amazed to learn that many Japanese mothers design elaborate school lunches for their children, and this has fuelled the ‘cute lunchbox’ fad around the world. Our students researched and designed their own bento, showing great creativity!
18.01.2022 Staff across the school spent time today working through important reflections and thinking surrounding learning and teaching at LORDS. All in all a productive day of collaboration and connection.

I'm sure our Year 6s walked away with lots of inspiration to create their own illustrations for the picture books they are publishing to raise awareness of the plight of refugees.
17.01.2022 There is only one sleep left until our annual Japanese culture day. These are some of the exciting activities that Year 5 and 6 students can look forward to. This is a great eco-friendly way of gardening. ... Shibori (Year 5) Shibori is a traditional Japanese form of tie dying. It is one if the earliest examples of cloth dying in Japan and dates from the 8th century. A special blue dye called indigo dye is traditionally used. The students will be dying pencil cases with the help of Natalie, a Shibori tie dying expert. Animation Workshop (Year 6) Most anime is made in Japan and it has become very popular with children around the world. The first anime ever released was The Battle of the Monkey and the Crab in 1917. Ty Hanson, the creator of the anime Millennium Exile, will be facilitating the anime workshop with Year 6. Daruma Doll (Year 6) Students will be making a Daruma Doll. In Japan, Daruma is used to set a goal. You colour one eye in black once you create a goal. You then put the doll on display so that you can be reminded to work hard towards this goal. Once you have accomplished this goal, you can colour the other eye in black.

01.01.2022 Our Year 3 students raised an amazing $715.55 from the sale of their items at the market place this term. The students decided to donate these proceeds to Drought Angels and to a church group which supports these communities. Thank you to everyone who supported this worthwhile event! We know our students have walked away with a deeper understanding of the needs of these communities, and how they might serve others to make a difference!
