24.01.2022 On behalf of the committee of the Coronet Bay Ratepayers and Residents Association (CBRRA), I’d like to acknowledge the sterling efforts of the Coronet Bay Lumi...nous Gallery Group for their outstanding creative display of luminous flowers and windmills at the Coronet Bay foreshore reserve. We are in awe of their efforts in making over 2,000 flowers from recycled plastic bottles which they have cut, glued and painted in an array of vibrant colours. The final arrangement I’m sure you’ll agree is stunning. (The materials used for this display will be further recycled or put towards future displays.) Congratulations goes to the entire Luminous Gallery team on their commitment, coordination, collaboration and execution of what must have been at times a difficult task during isolation. If you are able to visit the foreshore to witness this amazing display, don’t miss the opportunity. Bring a picnic and immerse yourself in the experience. Chris Petrie President - CBRRA See more

20.01.2022 I DIDN’T WIN THE ARCHIBALD AGAIN? Be careful what you wish for. I have been a professional practising artist for nearly forty years and have been able to make a... successful living out of my work and my business in that time. I have just been made aware of the winning entry for this year’s Archibald prize by Vincent Namatjira and yes, there seems to be some controversy around the winning entry and whether it is up to scratch to win such a prestigious prize. I have always said over the years how can you compare a Rembrandt to a Picasso, they are both regarded as masters in the own rights and times. You simply can’t compare the two styles or even men, but they are both considered masters of their times. Art is neither right or wrong, left or right or up or down. It simply IS. It is the relationship that the creator initially has with themselves, their lives and their back grounds, that brings them to a place where no matter what their particular mastery of colour and technique maybe, the most important thing in the end is that person has the ability to tell their story through image, material and idea. I personally do not enter art competitions. There are a few reasons for this and over the years I have become well known through my field for other things I have done that have nothing to do with winning an art prize. I have other artists friends scattered across the world, as many of you would know these days. In fact, thousands of them. Many of these men and women have also never entered any competitions, some of them are the most famous artists on the Planet and sell their work across the globe. There seems to be in the Academia of the art world a strange necessity to feel that you have to have awards attached at the bottom of your CV to become successful at being an artist. I have in my travels also met young artists that have won awards, prestigious awards as well and thought that winning these prizes was going to take them to the heights of fame and fortune, only for them to drop off the map in a few years because they were taken up by unscrupulous art dealers, gallery directors and agents and had their prices rise to such an extent that in the end they lost control of the careers and business because of greedy people wanting to get as much money out of them and their clients as they could. You only have one way to go when your prices become that high that you can’t sell them. Vincent Namatjira’s work is important because of its message, all be it, and I can hear the Academics rolling their eyes now, chosen, due to a political atmosphere that the world finds itself in these days. As I said be careful in the pursuit of prizes like this as in the end it’s a bit like taking Heroin, it feels good when you start and you are on top of the world , until the reality of the fact that you as an artist has to do your craft every single day and make a living out of it. like a pro golfer, you have to be on Top of your game, your work and your business 7 days a week. You only have to look at William Dobell’s winning entry in 1943 of Joshua Smith to see that the Archibald was never going to be a traditional portrait prize. Ben Quilty entered seven times until he won with his portrait of Magaret Olley in 2011. Remember folks that the world has changed massively in the last 20 years with technology and the internet and winning prizes is nice and does help you in a regional or even a national platform, but we now live in a globally connected community and I can guarantee you that 95% of the world knows nothing about the Archibald portrait prize. You Don’t need Art prizes to have a successful Art career, Graeme Stevenson See more

19.01.2022 The Australian Music Vault responded to the challenges of COVID-19 by creating a series of video stories that capture, in real time, the impact on the music com...munity. 'Episode 1: The Silent Voice' conveys how the Australian music industry was before COVID-19, what it was like when it had to shut down immediately, the consequences of staged restrictions, how it is responding to these challenges and ultimately, the mental health and wellbeing on an entire industry’s workforce. Many of the insights come from the unsung heroes whose stories are not often told, and give good advice for everybody on staying well and creative during lock down. 14.01.2022 Today I celebrate. 38 years around the sun. 10 years as a poet. And I have been thinking about how everything can turn in a moment. How my whole life pivots on ...the seemingly inconsequential. Ten years ago a student, Miranda sends me a YouTube link to a poem and my life trajectory is forever altered with the strike of a ‘return’ key. I would not be a poet if she didn’t send that. I wonder who I would have become? A year later and one random conversation that may have never happened leads to ‘The Centre for Poetics and Justice’ with Luka Lesson and Alia Gabres and a whole host of others. And since this time I can tell you that the majority of all I have done around the world, all that my poetry career has become, it all dominoed out from two more very small moments. They were moments I felt the smallest hint of intuition with at the time. Like the smallest whisper. It was an email I sent to a friend. And The night I walked into a gig a little late and chose to have a conversation with the girl on the door. Literally my life pivots on these moments. A misheard announcement at the airport. A man that walked past me and I knew I had to tell him about my summer past. A girl in class I felt like I should encourage. A woman I knew I had to write a poem for. All these small moments. I write this to say...Go with your gut. Listen to the small whispers. The inconsequential. Be open to the serendipitous. Be prepared to grab a hold when luck/destiny/providence comes knocking. Because you probably won’t hear the knock. But it’ll be the thing that changes everything. So be prepared to be lucky. All with open ears. Open hands. Open heart. I write this to say THANKS for the last ten years. Thanks for the last 38. I wonder where to from here and what shall pivot on a little moment. Life is made of single moments that mean nothing. Then one day, a single moment comes along to define every second that comes after. (Sabaa Tahir)

13.01.2022 Piazza Sant'Eustachio, Roma. Drawing from life is a way, I think, of "dilating" time and space. I can open the notebook to any page and it doesn't change: for ...every drawing, even from years ago, I remember very well who I was with, what season it was, the noises and the smells of things and the city around. I can find myself in a moment in Modena, Crema, Rome, Taranto, Milan, with little more effort I can also remember what period of my life it was, what I thought, the joys and worries. Drawing from life is a way to reconnect with the intensity of things and with yourself. https://www.instagram.com/p/CFiKs1GD0u8/ See more

02.01.2022 Why and how we do what we do! A call went out to keep plastic bottles for Coronet Bay Luminous Art whose mission it is to bring happiness and joy to the CB comm...unity, but more importantly to re-use and recycle objects to make our community art. The windmill will be permanently installed in the CB Community Garden after this display ends. However, every flower in this display which has been made from plastic bottles and materials, after much cutting, gluing and painting will be recycled for other projects. Our aim is to spend little money but lots of community spirit to bring our art to life. See more
