06.01.2022 THE HISTORY OF FAKE TAN Up until the 1920s, tan skin was a sign of poverty, and a creamy complexion was the epitome of beauty. If you’ve seen movies like Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby you’ll get the picture. Powdery, pale skin that rarely saw the sun was a sign of glamour and luxury. That is, until Coco Chanel came along! Coco Chanel was a fashion innovator with the iconic Chanel suit and little black dress but also gave birth to a new trend in the form of tanning. In 192...3, when Coco arrived back from Paris from a cruise in Cannes with a deep tan it become a new symbol, which signified health, wealth and decadent subversive style. Her sun-kissed look launched a fad and, eventually, an entire industry revolving around achieving the perfect tan. Soon, celebrities and socialites were flocking to tropical destinations during the winter, using sunlamps to darken their once-porcelain skin. Sunburns were common. So was lying out in the sun to work on your tan. Time passed, and in the fifties we saw the very first bikinis, and the all over tan became even more popular. Women all over the world ‘baked’ in the sun to get the all over bronzed look. In 1957, the tanning properties of DHA were discovered in Germany. DHA was first used as an active ingredient during research on the treatment of diabetics, some of whom tolerated DHA better than glucose. DHA was also administered orally as a treatment of a childhood glycogen-storage disease. When doctors noticed that when children spilt the DHA mixture on their skin, brown coloured spots would appear. One of the female doctors experimented by rubbing the mixture on her skin, and discovered ‘the browning action’ of fake tan. The 1960’s brought the introduction of the first ‘Fake Tan’. Early spray tans got a bad reputation because they often left the skin orange and streaky, and because of the smell which was caused by using DHA in an unnatural form. These 2 factors left a negative effect on the market. Luckily for us new fake tan products have been able to eliminate the smell and orange tint by going more natural. The products that provide the most natural glow either use a 100 percent natural form of DHA derived from renewable plant sources or mix DHA with keto sugar molecules to provide a natural-looking, longer-lasting glow. In recent years where the effects of the sun have proven to be damaging to the skin, Spray Tanning products have exploded as the safest alternative to achieve an all over bronze tan. Unlike extended time in the sun or hours in the tanning bed, spray tanning products offer safe avenues for achieving bronzed skin all year round.
