25.01.2022 Summertime is spawning time on the #GreatBarrierReef and not just for corals - giant clams get in on the act too! Great photo of Tridacna derasa releasing gamet...es at Kangaroo Reef last week, taken by our member and one of the living legends of marine science on the GBR, Dr Tony Ayling @toeayling Giant clams mature first as males at about 8 years of age, and by 11 years they have female gonads as well, and remain functional hermaphrodites for the rest of their lives, which can be 50 years plus. They also mass-spawn like the corals, and we see this late in the afternoon on neap tide days over the warmer months. Giant clams release about 2-3 million eggs when they spawn, and like other invertebrates, the tiny larvae drift around in the open sea for about 10 days, feeding on plankton and growing, before they are ready to return to the reef and settle as a tiny clam less than 1mm long. 08.01.2022 Dr Tony Ayling has been diving and monitoring the Great Barrier Reef since the early 1980's, and the guy got out of the water after our second #greatreefcensus ...survey at Walker Reef this morning and said 'Wow, that is some of the best coral cover I have seen in a long time'. That is what the Great Reef Census is all about - getting out to the rarely visited parts of our marine park and checking out exactly what is going on, in the water.
