15.01.2022 A Masterpiece Old Vine Barossa Shiraz! The first of 6 bottles we purchased on release & one of the finest reds we have EVER enjoyed! From vines dating back to 1881, with just 400 vines remaining - this is simply superb.... The integration of oak, fruit & tannin - while all prominent, are in perfect harmony & together deliver a beautifully aromatic wine that is rich & savoury - and has you in it’s grasp pouring yet another glass. This is a blinder of a wine - with another 10-20 years at least of great drinking ahead of it. 13.01.2022 A superb ‘funky’ Chardonnay from Savaterre vineyards in Victoria’s Beechworth Winelands. The nose immediately tells you this is something quite special - it’s ‘funky’ - perhaps wild fermented? it’s very French in style, it’s lean, and yet amazingly generous - the fruit is pristine - the acidity is on the sharper end, but it matches perfectly with what’s in the glass. The oak is light but adds to the experience.... It’s simply a delight to drink NOW, which I feel is the design point of this wine. Will it age & improve? Potentially - but it’s a joy right NOW that delights the tastebuds & the nose. The complete package! And the good news for us is, we’ll be visiting Beechworth as part of our April wine journeys - with Savaterre a visit to look forward to. 09.01.2022 An outstanding 21 year old Shiraz from Kirrihill Estates in Langehorne Creek ! Our last bottle, but thankfully the magic continues. On the nose & palate are enticing aged savoury notes of mushroom & earth.... It’s medium bodied, beautifully balanced, the oak has played it’s part & the inherent quality of the Shiraz fruit is very apparent. This is a wine that truly highlights the rewards of patience. It still has 10-20 years ahead of it, but it’s at it’s best now! A delight to drink & it paired beautifully with our bbq pork fillets & roast potatoes & field mushrooms. Langhorne Creek in South Australia for some unknown reason tends to be under valued / appreciated by Australian’s & yet it consistently delivers age worthy stunners like this, at terrific prices. And what a beautiful classic /classy label too - which in our view is so much nicer than the current labels - but that debate is for another time! 05.01.2022 Sunday Brunch - smoked salmon bagels & a lovely 2008 Bernard Bremont Grand Cru Champagne from the Ambonnay region. A beautiful Autumn morning was the perfect excuse for a little indulgence! Tasmanian Tassal smoked salmon, capers, finely chopped red onion, a sprinkling of lemon juice on a toasty hot bagel!... Enter the bubbles. At 13 years old, our Bernard Bremont is still in it’s infancy, somewhat closed, light to medium bodied in flavour, the acidity about where you’d expect it to be, lovely beading. A lovely drop which which should fill out nicely over the next 5-10 years. No need to rush this one!
