15.01.2022 Sydney Flemington Market Sydneysiders know that immigrant families often visit the Flemington farmers' market. More than ten years ago, when our children were y...oung, we often went there. At that time, my family was early in the morning, especially on Saturdays. It was like going to a market in a rural Chinese festival. The children dragged their carts, arrogantly and excitedly, as if going to the battlefield to harvest trophies. Similarly, buy seasonal fruits and vegetables for a week. More than ten years have passed, and we have gradually discovered that sometimes it is enough to buy one or two kilograms of vegetables and fruits in a supermarket instead. Then I put aside the days of going to Flemington Market. Last Sunday, we went to Flemington Market again and felt that it was a very familiar and unfamiliar place. The cries kept coming and going. Even the rubbish on the ground felt cordial. There are Chinese immigrants, Middle Eastern immigrants, and Europeans, most likely from Italy, Greece and Turkey. I saw a grandfather carrying a box of grapes, and the grandson followed behind him. After a while, the grandson said to grandpa, "Grandpa, I will help you get it." Grandpa tried to carry the grapes on that shoulder to his grandson's shoulders, but he knew that the grandson could not take them, so his hands had been supporting the grape box on the grandson's shoulders. My grandparents and grandson's joyful feelings brought me back to the affection that I used to have in rural Chinese families. When we got to the front of a stall, only 10 dollars a box of bananas were fresh as well. We just said, "Can you look at other boxes?" I saw this young man with a beard effortlessly opening a box of bananas to show us from where he was standing. My wife was dissatisfied and shook her head. The bearded man said, "It's all the same; it's all the same!" I said to him, "Mate, sorry, let's give lady another chance and open another box, please." As a result, the young man grinned. I saw his beard move. Without hesitation, he picked up another box and opened it to my wife. My wife said, OK. I can feel that our immigrants do business like this, as long as we work harder. As I walked, I thought we have immigrated to Australia, a country of immigration. What do we have? What will we lose? We have the hard work left by our ancestors, hardworking, not afraid of hardship, not fearful of tiredness, and a sincere and enthusiastic service attitude. Because we didn't come with a million dollars and didn't come with a golden spoon, then we have our ancestors' fine traditions. So after more than ten or two decades, maybe we feel that we have become a citizen of a country, and we think we are disdainful of doing many things, saying that we want to integrate into this mainstream society. In fact, what does it mean to integrate into mainstream society? What have we lost? There is nothing wrong with integrating into the dominant society. Since we are the first generation of immigrants here, what we can bring to this society is our hardworking character from the culture of our native country. We pass on our excellent culture to them so that they can also recall the beautiful and worthy traditions and cultures experienced by their ancestors because the earliest immigrants in Australia also worked hard and moved forward in this way, right? We can't lose these qualities.
