Oh, you’re not fat, they’ll say. And then they’ll try to come up with other words for what I am. Words like chunky or fluffy or thick. And when I hear, Oh, you’re not fat what I’m really hearing underneath it is Fat is bad. I don’t like fat people. But I like you, so you’re not fat. Trust me, I’m fat. As a society, we have come to the collective conclusion that fat people are gross. They’re lazy. They’re worthless. Which is all bullshit. Being fat is not bad. It’s not a statement on my character, as much as some people might think it is. It doesn’t mean I’m gross or lazy or worthless. I have PCOS, a hormonal imbalance that causes a tendency to gain a lot of weight. My junior year of high school, I went from 130 to 180 in a matter of months. When I got pregnant with my son at 18, I pushed up to over 200. And in the 18 years since my son was born, I’ve been able to drop below 200 exactly once. I’ve been as high as 280, and right now, I’m hovering between 240 and 250. I am fat. It’s a label that I happily claim for myself, and to deny that label because it makes you uncomfortable is a reflection on YOUR view of fat people, not a reflection on me. If I tell you I’m fat, and you say, Oh, you’re not fat expect that I’ll drift away from you, because I will feel judged. I will feel that you don’t accept me exactly as I am.
