22.01.2022 Ten things I'd like my family and friends to know about lymphoedema. But first, some Aussie statistics. According to the Victoria Government's Better Health Channel, around 300,000 Australians will experience lymphoedema at any given time. The Australasian Lymphology Association's website states around 20% of breast, genitourinary and gynaecological cancer and melanoma survivors will experience secondary lymphoedema. At birth, about one person in every 6000 will develop primary lymphoedema. What other things about lymphoedema would you like people to know? Let us know in the comments below.

14.01.2022 A Current Affair last night shone a light on the painful disease called lipoedema. It's different to lymphoedema, however, like lymphoedema, it's a progressive condition that may lead to lymphoedema - this is called lipo-lymphoedema. Treatment of both conditions is similar - compression and manual lymphatic drainage can help. Both conditions are not recognised by Medicare with their own item number so public funding for treatment is limited. The LAQ is committed to advocating the Federal Government for recognition of lymphoedema to improve support for people with this condition. Publicity like this segment on ACA can go a long way to achieve this goal. https://9now.nine.com.au//0cdf3abb-677a-421b-9cde-23caa917

14.01.2022 Some simple sensible tips to beat the Queensland summer heat for lymphies.

14.01.2022 LAQ in the news! Our Lymphoedema Awareness Month activities in March were featured in the Australasian Lymphology Association's latest Lymph Exchange magazine. While many events planned were thwarted by Covid-19 throughout the nation and the rest of the world, the LAQ was still very busy promoting lymphoedema awareness in Queensland during the month.

12.01.2022 Following on from Friday's feel-good vibes, have a listen to Denis's positive story on self-management during Covid-19 restrictions and why he is so rapt about his wraps! Lymphoedema Physiotherapist Andrea Mangion presented on "Managing Lymphoedema During Challenging Situations" in a webinar this week. As Andrea has highlighted, there have been many positives arising from the difficulties facing patients as well as therapists during Covid-19. Denis presented with swollen, le...aky legs and lacking in confidence. Restrictions on clinic treatments due to Covid highlighted the need to self-manage more effectively with compression wraps and after just a few weeks this is what he said: "One of the major changes to my life caused by these wraps is that I'm in charge now. It's a part of my treatment. I have a sense of freedom. I don't have to wait for a visiting nurse to come in and change the bandages on my legs. I do it myself. I take them off at night. I put them on in the morning. And I'm in charge. That to me was one of the major things that improved my outlook on life." Follow his full story here: https://www.youtube.com/watch See more

05.01.2022 The LAQ committee met up on Zoom for initial talks to consider a proposal to form a national association. The aim of the state groups to unite as a national association is for a stronger lobbying force for government policies and funding to deliver more recognition and help for people with lymphoedema. The LAQ is making promising discussions with other state groups on a national structure that will also ensure we keep delivering support services for our Queensland members at a local level. Exciting times ahead and we look forward to seeking our members' input in the near future as we make further progress.

04.01.2022 Hooray its the first Friday of spring! Put extra spring into your step by wearing compression while exercising. This adds resistance to skin and muscle pump activity which leads to improved lymphatic and venous return, helping to reduce swelling. So take a deep (diaphragmatic) breath in, get moving and dive in towards summer.
