19.01.2022 A timely reminder for all of us to consider urological cancers when discussing surveillance testing and annual checks with the doctor, especially if there is a family history of these cancers or an MSH2 mutation. The risks are not always well-understood, so take this article with you to discuss with your GP. It's definitely worth finding out more about one of the most common groups of Lynch syndrome cancers.
09.01.2022 Research takes time. A ten year follow-up on a long-term, international study published in 2011 (but originating in 1999) confirms that taking aspirin can significantly reduce the risk of future cancer in adults with Lynch syndrome and that the effects are enduring. 600 mg aspirin was taken daily for at least two years. The effects became apparent only after four years. This is a significant dose and researchers here in Australia and overseas are now exploring how much aspiri...n someone with Lynch syndrome would need for the best possible cancer risk reduction. If you haven't done so already, this is an important conversation to have with your GP or your oncologist. We are grateful to Professor Finlay Macrae and his colleagues around Australia for their hard work over the past decades with this ongoing research. https://www.thelancet.com//PIIS0140-6736(20)30366/fulltext See more
07.01.2022 Five years ago, we called for all endometrial (womb) cancers, as well as all colorectal (bowel) cancers, to be screened for Lynch syndrome. While universal screening of bowel cancers is being tested and implemented, this has not yet happened for endometrial cancers, the most prevalent first cancer for women with Lynch syndrome, according to our research. The UK's health regulator has now called for this change. It's time for Australia to do the same. http://www.pharmatimes.com//nice_recommends_testing_womb_c
01.01.2022 Be better prepared for your next visit to the doctor! Living with Lynch syndrome is challenging at the best of times and most of us have to manage our own condition, our treatment and our care ourselves. It is vital to prepare well for medical appointments, yet once there, it is easy to forget important questions. HealthDirect's Question Builder is a good way to make the most of every appointment. Firstly, select type of visit, tick all the questions that might be relevant to you, choose those your doctor might ask and then print the list or email it to yourself. It's a good idea to ask a friend or family member to come along to the appointment to take some notes, too.
