15.01.2022 I went to Paraguay because I knew bitter orange trees grew indigenously in the forests and the natives knew how to harvest and distill the highest quality essen...tial oil from the leaves known commonly as Petitgrain. What I didn’t know is how desperately they needed us and we needed them. As we traveled deep into the forest, I quickly discovered that this ecosystem is being threatened. Trees are being cleared so that soy crops can be planted. Deadly chemicals are being sprayed on the crops right next to where children live and play, and life expectancy is plummeting. The poverty levels in this area are devastating because there is no industry outside of the soy crops that exists. Years ago people living in the forest harvested and distilled Petitgrain from the leaves of the bitter orange trees. Sadly brokers became greedy and started extending the essential oil they had produced with synthetics. The greed of the brokers destroyed this market for the good, hard working people of Paraguay, and distilleries were abandoned leaving families with no way to provide for themselves. Bitter orange trees grow in these forests. Because doTERRA brings the demand for pure Petitgrain essential oil, we give reason to save the forests by offering an industry for these amazing people. They have been taught the art of distillation by their fathers. Only the branches are harvested so the sustainability of the forest is essential. By offering fair market prices and organizing the efforts of the native people, we all benefit. We are able to enjoy the benefits of this magnificent essential oil that is very similar in benefits and composition to Lavender with a more herbal aroma. The families benefit by having sustainable income. We have provided the resources to build new distilleries so they can create a thriving industry that brings the community together for a common cause. This project is still in infancy stages.
