24.01.2022 Been a very busy end of year, so I hope you are all putting your feet up too
22.01.2022 Been too long inbetween my #funfactfriday posts! It is 1 year since I visited this beautiful city and my daughter has just arrived home from her 6 week exchange in Barcelona so today let’s talk about Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia- it is a large unfinished work in progress, a Roman Catholic Church in Barcelona. Designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi it is one of his many projects that make this city so interesting to visit! It was however originally designed by ...Francisco de Paula del Villar, Construction started in 1882 and in 1883 Villar resigned and Gaudi took over the project. At the time of his death in 1926 less than a quarter of the building was complete, Gaudi devoted his life to the project and is actually buried in the crypt. Construction was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War in the mid 1930’s, with a fire destroying the plans and model, it took another 15 years to piece together the project before construction recommenced in the 1950’s. It was opened in 2010 with 8 of the original 18 spires built. The spires represent important Biblical figures in the New Testament. The church has 3 facades: the Nativity to the East, Passion to the West and Glory to the South(yet to be completed). The remaining 10 spires and facades are estimated to be completed by 2026 and when finished will be the tallest church building in the world. It is also part of UNESCO World Heritage Site-the Works of Antoni Gaudi! 06.01.2022 Funfact FridayMarina Bay Sands Singapore was opened on the 27th April 2010. The Sky-High resort billed as one of the world’s most challenging construction projects! Designed by Moshe Safdie at a staggering cost of S$8 Billion. More than 70, 000 tons of steel were used to build this amazing superstructure which towers 200m into the skyline of Singapore. 1 hotel floor was built every 4 days! The Skypark with its Bars, restaurants, observation deck and infinity pool(for hotel g...uests only and well worth staying for just a night so you can experience it) can accommodate 3,900 people. The hotel has 2561 rooms and suites and the infinity pool at 150m long spanning the towers is the worlds largest and longest rooftop pool at its height of 57 levels above the city. Spanning 3 towers the 57th floor is an engineering feat and beautiful by day or night. The internal foyers with their curves and angles provide interest whether viewed from above or below! 03.01.2022 Fun Fact Friday: Guess where and what the name of this impressive piece of architecture is so I know this style is not for everyone but it is in fact an iconic American building and is listed in the US National Register of Historic Places. And given it was built in 1939 it has sure seen it’s fair share of history. This Colonial Revival style home by architect Kaitlin King covers an expansive 1630 sqm and has a total of 23 rooms incl 8 bedrooms and bathrooms. Colonial Reviv...al architecture was and still is a design movement in the US and Canada embracing Georgian and Neoclassical styles. The aesthetic encompasses elaborate front entry doors often with fanlights and sidelights, Corinthian style columned porches and a symmetrical facade. This particular home was ahead of its time with walk in robes and ensuites to all bedrooms and if walls could speak, no doubt there would be many stories to be told. I remember as a child it was my Dad’s (he was a carpenter) favourite style to build. So why am I sharing this? Because good Building Design should be timeless, giving longevity to its owners and occupants. By all means be on trend but to retain its value, spare a thought as to where it is most important to spend your $.....so what and where is this, of course it is #graceland in Memphis USA and the final home and resting place of #elvispresley #iconicbuildings #ljdsfunfactfriday #bucketlistarchitecture @ Mackay, Queensland See more
02.01.2022 Its FunFact Friday and as promised last weekend I went to Maryborough to visit family and so guess what my favourite style is... the ol’ Queenslander it happened to be open home weekend too whilst I was there so I was lucky enough to go inside one or two! The first pic is actually of alts & adds I worked on back 30+ years ago whilst I was working in Hervey Bay as a cadet trainee draftsperson! The measure up took all day to complete as it is one of the largest old homes in t...own. I was very fortunate to be working for an architect whose passion was restoring old homes and working with many of the National Trust buildings including The Wharf Street Precinct. I still love the high ceilings, timber floors, VJ walls, wrap verandahs, central corridors and fretwork over doors. These design principles were so helpful in cross ventilation and keeping the homes cool in the hotter months. #iconicbuildings #bucketlistarchitecture #ljdsfunfactfriday #queenslander #queenslanderhome #bdaq #buildingdesignermackay @ Maryborough, Queensland See more
01.01.2022 Remember the house I featured last year when I was back home visiting in Maryborough, well it’s For Sale absolute stunner!!
01.01.2022 Happy Easter and hope you are all staying happy and healthy! I have been following these guys for a while now and given our current circumstances I think we all are probably understanding more and more each day that what we need versus what we want is perhaps changing. Endless hours of episodes to watch and this one is great to start with for an overview of previously featured tiny houses and how they are coping with lock down all over the world. All the episodes are on their website, definitely food for thought #livingbiginatinyhouse #buildingdesignermackay
