09.01.2022 I have forever struggled with finding the "truth" about cardio. Fasted, HIT, steady state, metabolic training, sprints, intervals, to do or not to do. And I... have done them all, with the sole mission of burning body fat - on xtrainers, steppers, rowers, treadies, stair repeats, bootcamp, body attack, my street - (its really steep!), dance DVDs, px90, skipping rope on my deck, the playground whilst my kids see-sawed, in the rain, the blistering sun, back streets, main roads, forests, on my bike, on rollerskates, Ive heard every 80s song that was every made, at 4am, at midnight, even when sick and tired, if it had to be done I made sure it got done , often 2 hours a day for at least 6 weeks leading up to a show. Holy Dooley that was exhausting just thinking about my years of running myself into the ground. Now, after immersing myself into the research on cortisol, stress and metabolic damage I am more than ever convinced that exhausting cardio does more damage than good. It causes oxidative cell damage, increases estrogen, slows thyroid production, catabolises your muscles and tissues, and slows fat burning. I know this is a controversial matter but I have seen time and time again the metabolic damage caused by excessive cardio regimes. My 2015 comp season was my most successful. I was the leanest and healthiest, I have ever been and I did not even do 2 min cardio. 04.01.2022 Consistent gym goers... please remember that this time of the year there are many new people going to the gym for the first time ever or the first time in such ...a long time. Smile at them, say hi, and maybe make some positive comment. If you like their shoes, compliment them, chances are they just went out and bought them. You will never know the amount of courage it took them to show up. That woman you see trying to figure out how to use the squat machine... she was just told by her doctor that she has diabetes and needs to lose weight to control her blood sugar levels. That 65 year old guy walking on the treadmill leaning forward with a death grip on the handles... he just retired and has come to the realization that if he doesnt lose 50 lbs and gain strength and flexibility, he will no longer be able to golf, even though he now has the time and money for it. That woman in her early 30s wearing really baggy clothes... she has two little kids at home and has been battling loneliness and postpartum depression since she chose to be a stay at home mom. Unfortunately, we know more than 80% wont be there a month from now, but your smile, compliment, high five, whatever, could be the moment that gets them past the first couple weeks of fear and self-consciousness to turn it into a lifestyle. - Dustin Maher
