24.01.2022 Today marks 40 years since five young lives were tragically lost battling a bush fire at Waterfall. It was 3rd November 1980 - just before 5am crews were alerted to a bush fire burning near McKell Avenue. Numerous brigades responded to the southern end of the Royal National Park, working to contain a large fire which was burning under mild conditions.... The conditions on the day were cool, the temperature reached 19c, humidity was low and southerly winds prevailed. As the southerly winds increased in strength late afternoon, the fire transitioned from the forested area into heath, increasing the intensity and spread. The fire rapidly headed in a northerly direction towards the Uloola trail. It was on this trail where a fire tanker from Headquarters (Heathcote) Brigade was overrun by fire. It was at this location where five brave firefighters were lost - Steve Crunkhorn, 26, Gregory Rolfe, 24, Vernon Stedman, 21, William Cummings, 21 and David Marshall, 19. The fire was contained days later after burning 2,246 hectares of the Royal National Park. We remember these brave firefighters.

21.01.2022 A bush fire can be a terrifying situation, intense heat and flames will make you tire quickly, it will be difficult to see and breathe. You may become confused or disorientated. Powerlines and fallen trees can block roads and make driving dangerous.... It’s always better to leave early, before the fire arrives. Visit www.myfireplan.com.au and make a bush fire survival plan, it will help you make important decisions like when to leave or what you need to be prepared to stay. #RFS #PreParedForAnything #NSWFires

17.01.2022 Today marks the first anniversary of the tragic death of NSW RFS volunteer Colin Burns. Colin lost his life on his property at Belowra, as he was making his way to the local fire shed to help protect local residents who were sheltering from fires. Colin was a long time member of the Belowra Brigade in the NSW RFS Far South Coast Team, initially joining in the late 1980s.... We remember Colin and our hearts go out to his family, friends and fellow volunteers today.

17.01.2022 Know what to do when you hear a siren or see the flashing blue or red lights of an approaching emergency vehicle? When you hear a siren or see the flashing blue or red lights of an approaching emergency vehicle: * Give way to the emergency vehicle if you are stopped do not move until it is safe to proceed, even if the traffic light is green. If you are moving, you must slow down and stop if necessary to avoid a collision with the emergency vehicle.... * Move out of the way as soon as you can safely do so * Move over as much as you can to the left-hand side of the road or, if possible, move onto the road shoulder or breakdown lane. On multi-lane roads, try to move into the left lane to let the emergency vehicle pass * Drivers on both sides of the road should be prepared to move out of the path of emergency vehicles * Emergency vehicles with sirens sounding or lights flashing responding to urgent situations are not required to follow the rules, as long as it is safe for them to do so. Drivers should always be extra cautious when they see flashing lights or hear sirens. https://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au//approaching-emerg

09.01.2022 On this day thirty-eight years ago, three volunteers of Heathcote Brigade tragically lost their lives as a result of a bush fire in the Royal National Park. It was Sunday 9th January 1983, just after 9am when local firefighters were alerted to a bush fire in the Royal National Park near the Princes Highway, between Loftus and Sutherland. Later in the afternoon, the fire crossed a creek below Greenhaven Road, Grays Point burning upslope towards Anana Hill. It was at this locat...ion where the three firefighters sadly lost their lives and six other firefighters were seriously injured. The fire was contained three days later burning 337 hectares of the Royal National Park. Today marks the anniversary when three firefighters from Heathcote Brigade, Keith Campbell, Thomas Bielecke and Gregory Moon made the ultimate sacrifice protecting the Sutherland Shire. Today we remember them and are thinking of their families. We are also thinking of the injured firefighters, some of whom are still active with the Heathcote Brigade today. See more

07.01.2022 Bush Fire Danger Period | 1st October 2020 Yesterday was the commencement of the Bush Fire Danger Period within the Macarthur Area. Bush Fire Danger Period and Fire Permits | A Fire Permit is required for burning activities during the Bush Fire Danger Period. Fire Permits help ensure fire is used safely and minimise the danger to you, your property and the community.... The key things to remember: You need a fire permit if it's the Bush Fire Danger Period. Just because it's the Bush Fire Danger Period doesn't mean you can't use fire - but there are restrictions to ensure fire is used safely. Getting a permit is free and easy. Contact your local Fire Control Centre. There are heavy penalties if you don't follow restrictions or rules. Please note that other restrictions, approvals and/or permits may apply to council areas where the Bush Fire Danger Period has not been declared. For example, backyard burning is not permitted in many suburban areas due to Environmental Regulations and Council or Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) permission is required. Check these guides for more information on permits and reducing hazards on your property: Before You Light That Fire - information on permits and steps you need to take before using fire on your property (https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au//124/BeforeYouLightThatFire.pdf) Can I or Can't I - a simple guide to restrictions such as during Total Fire Bans (https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au//Standards-Lighting-a-Fire-2017)
