25.01.2022 On this day 46 years ago Gough Whitlam announced the creation of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park saying: We will take this action to protect an irreplaceable part of Australia’s natural heritage. We will preserve it both for its intrinsic value and its importance to the tourism industry in Queensland. The press statement issued on the 25 November 1974 goes on to say:... ‘Mr. Whitlam said there had been little evidence of Mr. Bjelke-Petersen’s willingness to co-operate. Queensland needed a Labor Government to ensure the survival of the Reef.’
24.01.2022 We all know the LNP like cutting frontline services, but this takes the ‘razor gang’ to a whole new level... A few of you have contacted me about my head being slashed off corflutes and while Campbell Newman’s Assistant Treasurer Deb Frecklington can’t rule out cutting funding to our hospitals and schools I can’t promise that we’ll be able to replace these signs every time someone cuts them. What I can promise is that I’ll continue to work hard every day on Queensland’s economic recovery plan and ensure our community gets the attention and investment we deserve.
24.01.2022 Queensland Health has stood up more fever clinics across the state, with extended hours and increased staffing at many locations. Private pathologies and Commonwealth testing clinics have also been reopened today. Before you go to get tested, please check the website to find options near you: http://bit.ly/QLDfeverclinics
23.01.2022 Good news for Tradies and Motorists. Work on Yatala Exit 41 has started on the Palaszczuk Governments $96 million upgrade. John Holland have also just been awarded the contract to carry out heavy construction on our Light Rail extension to Burleigh. ... It’ll provide around 760 jobs for Gold Coasters over the next three years, providing 6.6 kilometres of light rail down to Burleigh Heads. Queenslanders have stepped when it comes to managing the health impacts of COVID-19, and thanks to their ongoing response the Palaszczuk Government has been able to continue delivering Queensland’s plan for economic recovery. For the Gold Coast that means we’ve been able upgrade Exit 57, start building a $1 billion M1 upgrade to Tugun, lock in $755 million to build a second M1 and upgrade those interchanges in the northern suburbs where that growth is expected. Contrast that to the LNP who cut roads funding by $1.6 billion and sacked hundreds of Gold Coasters when Campbell Newman was Premier and Deb Frecklington was his Assistant Minister.
23.01.2022 It is an incredible honour to be given your trust to represent the area that I grew up in and love for a second term in Parliament. To everyone who placed their faith in me for the next four years - thank you! I will continue to work hard every day for our community. ... Thank you to all of the incredible grass roots campaigners and supporters who gave up so much of their own time to voluntarily help on our campaign. I cannot thank you enough! I also thank all my opponents and their supporters. Politics can be tough and regardless of what your views, candidates and campaigners who are willing to take a stand and give up their own time to do what they believe is right is admirable. I’ll be having an early night and will be back at work tomorrow morning.
23.01.2022 Talking to 9 News Gold Coast this morning at Express Recycling Nerang about National Recycling Week. Our Palaszczuk Government has a set a 2050 target to achieve: 25% reduction in household waste... 90% of waste is recovered and does not go to landfill 75% recycling rates across all waste types If you want to help with the war on waste you can: take your eligible drink containers to your nearest container refund point for a 10c refund or donate to your local community group, more at: www.containersforchange.com.au find out what recycling options are available near you for recycling items like e-waste, batteries and paint at: https://recyclingnearyou.com.au donate good quality items to charity! 23.01.2022 Meet some of Queensland’s Heroes. These Queensland National Parks Rangers are out day and night fighting the fire on World Heritage Listed K’gari (Fraser Island). They’ve been working tirelessly for over a month to contain this fire and ensure that the majority of the island remains open and doesn’t threaten life or property.... The Palaszczuk Government has invested an extra $16 million over four years, plus another $2.6 million each year to improve our capability for bushfire management in Queensland’s parks and forests. Lighting an illegal campfire is dangerous and can have serious consequences. Protecting the environment is everyone’s business. We all have a role to play.
22.01.2022 The Palaszczuk Government has a plan for the Gold Coast and is is delivering the frontline services our community needs. Today I had the pleasure of handing over the keys to a brand new $4.5 million fire station and fire truck for the Northern GC. We cannot risk Campbell Newman’s Assistant Treasurer Deb Frecklington who’s a risk to our economic recovery and ripped the guts out of frontline services up and down Queensland.
22.01.2022 Today is Election Day and we have a clear choice. A strong stable Palaszczuk Government who will continue delivering for our community with: Health $160 million for new and expanded hospitals to carter for the new health needs of the Gold Coast... Boosting frontline staff with extra 482 nurses, 163 doctors and 163 health professionals for the Gold Coast. M1 Upgrades $755 million for the Second M1 from Carrara to Coomera supporting 700 jobs, with construction starting next year Continuing our ugrades to the M1 - 6 lanes from Brisbane to Tugun supporting 2,000 jobs, with upgrades from Varsity Lakes to Tugun and Daisy Hill to Eight Mile Plains currently underway. Upgrading Exits 41, 45, 49. Education $22 million to build extra classrooms at Pacific Pines State High School $5 million for upgrades to the performing arts space at Nerang High School $700,000 for upgrades at William Duncan State School $350,000 for prep playground and school refurbishments at Nerang State School $350,000 for upgrades to the STEM area at Worongary State School $300,000 for fence upgrades at Gaven State School Airconditioning every state school classroom, library and staffroom by 2022 Delivering 190,000 solar panels for state school rooftops Local Roads and Transport $7.5 million upgrade local intersection including Yalkuri Drive and Beaudesert-Nerang-Maulsand Rd intersection. Trail for demand response transport for Nerang, Highland Park and Pacific Pines to support people to get to transport hubs Manufacturing New Manufacturing Hub on the Gold Coast part of $40 million package to create jobs OR A Deb Frecklington LNP minority Government or cuts and chaos. I’m asking for your support this election to continue our economic recovery plan and deliver for our community.

21.01.2022 When I make a promise I deliver. William Duncan State School’s new shade structure and water bubbler is finished! In 2017 I committed $300,000 for these projects and now our kids can easily grab a drink while playing basketball and not get sunburnt.... We’re also installing solar panels on our school rooftops and air-conditioning all state schools classrooms, libraries and staff rooms as well as taking over the replacement and maintenance cost of these units.
21.01.2022 10 years ago I was celebrating Schoolies. Fast forward a decade and it’s been a rough year for school leavers. While official events were cancelled due to #COVID19 year 12 graduates are still able to celebrate. ... And I think they deserve to have some fun. Finishing Year 12 is an amazing achievement on its own, but they’ve done it with added pressure of a global pandemic with resilience. We don’t want to be the fun police. But we do want to make sure that young people are safe and watching out for their mates. As Minister for Youth Affairs I’ll now be working alongside our Safe School Support team who lead a multi-agency response with the support of community partners and councils to keep our future leaders safe. Late Friday night I got a chance to meet these passionate and hardworking individuals who do a phenomenal job. SchooliesGC
20.01.2022 Sommerville Smash Repairs is a business in Nerang who’ve been able to take on five apprentices through our Free Apprenticeships for Under 21s initiative. We want to make sure we have skilled workers to help with Queensland's recovery from COVID. That’s why we’ve made it easier for businesses like Somerville Smash Repairs to take on an apprentice with our Free Apprenticeships for Under 21s initiative.
19.01.2022 Queensland Election 2020
18.01.2022 Climate Change is what inspired me to get involved in politics at the age of 14 during the Kevin07 election, handing out ‘how to vote’ cards at the Nerang PCYC by myself. I got involved because I was passionate about our future. 13 years later, I’m still equally as determined to leave a better world for the next generation. ... So this morning it was a huge honour to be sworn in by the Governor, alongside the Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, my family and colleagues, as Minister for the Environment and the Great Barrier Reef and Minister for Science and Youth affairs. I’d like to acknowledge the hard work of Leeanne Enoch who oversaw the implementation of the Container Refund Scheme; the $60m Protected Area Strategy that includes the doubling of Indigenous Land and Sea Rangers ; the Bio Discovery act giving greater powers to First Nations people; the land restoration fund; SEQ koala conservation strategy; all of the work that’s been done to reduce single use plastics in our environment including the introduction of legislation as well as adding protections for the Great Barrier Reef. I’m looking forward to building on that legacy. Now, it’s back to work!
18.01.2022 Out early this morning spreading the news that a re-elected Palaszczuk Government will invest $350,000 to upgrade the STEM building at Worongary State School. This comes on top of the $800,000 we’ve just completed upgrading the year 5 & 6 block. This election we have a clear choice. ... Stick with Annastacia Palaszczuk's strong health response and recovery plan for jobs. Don't risk Deb Frecklington's reckless decisions on borders against health advice and job cuts.
18.01.2022 Good news for residents in Nerang West, Highland Park and Pacific Pines. A re-elected Palaszczuk Government will provide greater access to public transport with a Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) trial for our area. This $2.8 million commitment will allow families who don’t have immediate access public transport to be picked up from their address on-demand.... This is a new way of thinking how we can get from A to B. This has been trialed in Logan operating between 6am to 10pm seven days a week costing: $3 for adults, and $1.50 for concession card holders. The launch of DRT on the Gold Coast also includes a revamp of the technology used to manage dispatch, route planning and customer bookings. This comes on top of funding to prioritise rapid transit along the Nerang to Broadbeach corridor. I’ve heard your calls for better public transport and I’m asking for your support this election to continue delivering for the community I grew up in and love.
18.01.2022 Who’s excited to see their loved ones from Victoria? From elections (pics below), Christmas celebrations through to more difficult times - family is everything and mine have always been there. This year has been hard for a lot of families so I’m very pleased to share the good news! ... Today Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced Queensland will reopen to Victoria from 1am on December 1. Victoria and New South Wales have both reached 28 days of no unlinked community transmission, which means it’s safe to open our borders again. P.S. the awkward photo down the bottom was a re-enactment of a photo from when they were children. As for my eyes being shut in the first photo- all I can say is, it was a long campaign!
17.01.2022 Hands up if you think it’s time to ban polystyrene takeaway containers? The Palaszczuk Government has introduced legislation to ban single use plastics straws, stirrers, cutlery and plates. Now, consultation is underway to ban polystyrene takeaway containers as well.... Make sure you have your voice heard! Consultation ends at midnight on Friday at: https://bit.ly/2XA7vSq

16.01.2022 The Election is officially on for October 31 You have 25 days to make a choice about who you want representing our community and Queensland Now more than ever we need a strong Government with a plan for economic recovery. ... Not Deb Frecklington and the LNP who sacked 4,400 health workers and took the Gold Coast for granted failing to spend a single new dollar on the M1. Now is not the time to risk the LNP who have already admitted they will make 'cuts' again. If you want to get involved in our campaign in Gaven, you can sign up here: https://bit.ly/3nicMtv
16.01.2022 Happy World Teachers’ Day! While I can’t drop by to thank everyone in person this year due to the election, but I wanted to make sure all of our teachers know how appreciated they are. I’ve had the great privilege of working with our schools to ensure we get upgrades, air-conditioning and solar panels and a re-elected Palaszczuk Government will hire 6,190 new teachers and 1,139 teacher-aides.
15.01.2022 Had the pleasure of handing over the keys to a brand new fire station and fire appliance this morning, at the official opening of the Pimpama Fire and Emergency Station. This $4.5 million new facility has created hundreds of jobs and will now take pressure off stations like ours here in Nerang. The Palaszczuk Government has a plan for the Gold Coast, and this is one example of delivering real services and real support for our growing communities.

15.01.2022 Wow... Because Deb Frecklington can’t deliver a strong stable government, the LNP are now preferencing One Nation, Clive Palmer’s party & the Greens in a desperate scheme to piece together a Frankenstein minority government The LNP are a massive risk to Qld's recovery.
14.01.2022 This Saturday is Agnes’ 100th birthday. I’ve had the privilege of chatting with Agnes a few times over this term of Government and every time I do it brings a smile to my face. She’s adored by so many people in our community which was evident with all of her neighbours joining this afternoon’s celebration to shower her with gifts.... I won’t get an opportunity to attend her party on Saturday due to the election so I took some time away from pre-poll to make sure this beautiful person knows how much she’s appreciated.
14.01.2022 Wow... Hardly surprising though given Deb Frecklington boasts about being Campbell Newman’s Assistant Treasurer!
14.01.2022 BREAKING: Queensland will reopen to Greater Sydney at 1am on December 1, as per our roadmap. It’s been 28 days since New South Wales had an unlinked case. 11.01.2022 The future is electric. Transport is one of the largest emitting sectors of greenhouse gas emissions in the state! To help drive down these emissions (pun intended) the Palaszczuk Government is delivering the world’s longest electric super highway’s in a single state.... From Coolangatta to Cairns (where I am today), and from Brisbane to Toowoomba we want Queenslanders and tourists to be able to travel in a low or zero emissions vehicle. For more info visit: https://bit.ly/3pNN1m1
10.01.2022 What are you doing this Sunday morning We’ve been out and about early spreading the word about our investment to start building the Second M1, part of Queensland’s Economic Recovery Plan to create jobs.

07.01.2022 Custom Design Shopfitting is a Nerang based family owned business who has received one of the Palaszczuk Government’s Small Business grants. They’ve used this funding to upgrade and purchase a joinery software program and key, setting up a new computer as well as paying the factory rent for one month to reduce the financial burden during Covid-19. This funding support has helped this small business keep staff employed and on Thursday I got to check out some of the work they’re doing!
07.01.2022 These legends are helping take care of Shaz the turtle . Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (CTRC) is a voluntary non-profit organisation dedicated to the rehabilitation of sick and injured turtles. The Great Barrier Reef is home to six of the world’s seven species of marine turtles. ... Unfortunately, Shaz was found with orange nylon wrapped around her. It was wrapped around her shell for a long period of time which caused a deformity in her growth. Due to that she suffers from floating syndrome. In an attempt to reduce waste and stop it from ending up in our waterways our Palaszczuk Government has banned single-use light-weight plastic bags and established the highly successful container refund scheme. When we asked Queenslanders whether we should ban plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery and plates, almost 20,000 people responded with 94% supporting the move. The Palaszczuk Government responded by introducing a bill to enable single-use plastic items to be banned, starting with plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery and plates as a first step. Through the consultation, we also heard significant support for banning expanded polystyrene products such as takeaway cups, and containers. As a result of that public feedback we’ve committed to undertaking further consultation to include polystyrene items in the ban. Because turtles like Shaz shouldn’t have to put up with this rubbish!
07.01.2022 Q&A with Dr Jeannette Young
06.01.2022 Today’s Election Day and it’s the last day to vote. Queenslanders have a clear choice to make between Annastacia Palaszczuk and Deb Frecklington - between a stable Labor government or an LNP government fixated on major cuts to local jobs and frontline services. Keep Queensland safe and make the right choice.... Vote for Labor’s economic recovery plan today.
06.01.2022 Stopped in for a quick bite to eat at the Pacific Pines Tavern with these legends.
06.01.2022 Filming a quick congratulatory message to the students involved in the Wonder of ScienceVirtual State Conference this Friday. Throughout the program students in years three to nine work on a collaborative inquiry project guided by Young Science Ambassadors, who are PhD candidates or early career researchers from leading Queensland universities. A STEM education provides our kids with the ability to participate in the new knowledge-based jobs and industries of the future -... some of which don’t even exist yet! Best of luck to all of the finalists!
05.01.2022 The Gold Coast has changed a lot. Our city is sixth largest in the country and one of the fastest growing regions - and that’s why we need infrastructure to back it. This includes the Second M1 - a $755 million infrastructure project to build a 16km motorway between Nerang and Coomera to divert 60,000 cars off the road. It’s part of the Palaszczuk Government’s $830 million Gold Coast roads and infrastructure and jobs package and will make travel faster and safer for Gold Coas...ters. This is on top of our upgrades at: Exit 41, 45, 49 and 57 Mudgeeraba to Varsity Lakes and Gateway Merge upgrades which are completed. Varsity Lakes to Tugun and Daisy Hill to Eight Mile Plains upgrades which are under construction After completing the second stage of the light rail, stage 3 to Burleigh is under construction. It’s all part of the Palaszczuk Government’s plan for Queensland’s economic recovery and keep projects moving.
03.01.2022 A great honour to be asked to serve as Minister for the Environment and the Great Barrier Reef and Minister for Science and Youth Affairs. #TeamQLD
03.01.2022 Fun Fact: QLD has seen a 54% decrease in beverage container litter since our Palaszczuk Government introduced Containers for Change. Not only are we protecting our environment with 2.4 billion containers recycled through refund points, this scheme has also: created more than 700 new jobs, and ... put $300 million back into the pockets of charities, community groups and businesses. Thanks to 9 News Gold Coast for helping get the word out for National Recycling Week.

We’ve been working closely to build infrastructure projects like our M1 upgrades to Tugun and light rail extension and today we’ve locked in another almost $1.5 billion project which will create 700 jobs.
01.01.2022 Girls to the front I’m proud to be one of 21 Queensland Labor women sworn in today to the Queensland Parliament. In 2018 when I delivered my first speech as Queensland’s youngest woman elected, I acknowledged how lucky I was to live in a state during a time where my presence was welcomed. ... This wasn’t the case for many trailblazers who came before me. We stand on the shoulders of giants who sacrificed so much in the pursuit of gender parity and I certainly don’t take the responsibility to continue that path towards equality lightly. I hope this picture encourages more women to help change the world for the better. Because you can’t be what you can’t see!
01.01.2022 Nice weather for ducks! It’s a little wet today and the shoes are now off but we are still here braving the weather at Nerang High. There’s still time to vote, booths are open until 6pm tonight.... Come down and say Hi
01.01.2022 Even the cats in Pacific Pines are loving Queensland’s Economic Recovery Plan to create jobs.
