24.01.2022 Using Instagram’s new Guides feature. Have you checked out Guides yet? I’d describe them as sort of ‘Pinteresty’. A place to collate posts from around Instagram that you love or that have meaning. It’s a nice feature to create a more ‘sticky’ profile and to give more insight into your business or brand and to collaborate and share. There are three different ways you can create guides:... Places - recommend places in your local area and beyond. Products - recommend your favourite products from accounts that have a shop or you can add your own posts too. Posts - recommend posts you have created yourself or saved (remember permission here). I’m using Guides to curate and present my own tips to help me over the holidays. When people message me to ask things like how can I use hashtags I can point them to a Guide that is all about hashtags. It’s already been helpful and I can see how it can bring fresh engagement to old posts. It also means people don’t have to scroll back through my feed to find what they are looking for. You can create them the same way you create a post or Reel - by tapping the big + on your profile. If you’re not ready to start, hit save here so you don’t forget. What could you use Guides for? Definitely something to think about. . #bettersocial #instagramguides #socialmediatips #instagramtipsandtricks #instagramtipsforbusiness

23.01.2022 Are you using hashtags on Facebook yet? If not, you probably should be. Facebook has even stated that you’ll get better reach with them now. In much the same way as Instagram, you can see what hashtags are popular just by typing them into the search bar. You get the number of times they’ve been used and can go and have a look at the type of content. You’ll also get suggested hashtags when you start typing them.... Don’t go crazy though, start with maybe five and apply the same thought process as Instagram when you’re wondering which ones to use. You’ll also need to pop them right at the end of the post, not pepper them throughout the caption - that is purely a Twitter thing to make use of the limited character count. Here's a tip: If you can be bothered, head back through your old posts and add a few hashtags to see if that resurfaces them. Make sure the content is still relevant and interesting today and use hashtags that are relevant to the content. You may get a little burst of engagement. If hashtags are still a mystery to you, send me a message with your questions and I’ll get back to you. There are absolutely no stupid questions when it comes to this stuff and, if there were, I promise you I've already heard them ;) . #bettersocial #FacebookTips #socialmediatips #socialmediaforbusiness

22.01.2022 Winner I’ve chosen the winner of my Halloween comp from a list of incredible businesses. Sorry I’m late with the announcement but it was a really hard decision to make and I wanted to make sure they were good to go too However I’ve decided to not announce ‘who’ it is just yet because I would like to spend more time with them, working out what they need and what we can achieve together. I think that would be best for them with no one watching on.... One thing I value really highly in the social media space is authenticity and privacy. I work with a lot of businesses but I don’t use them to promote mine. Sooo you may or may not ever find out who wonHopefully you all get where I’m coming from here The good news is I am going to run something similar early next year to celebrate Mac&Ernie’s fifth birthday. So keep an eye out and if you really want to be alerted, head to my Stories today and tap the countdown and then Instagram will remind you directly and you can keep me to my word. Thanks everyone! . #bettersocial #socialmediaagency

21.01.2022 I’m not feeling much like the usual wrap up of what’s been happening this year. I wouldn’t even know where to start. In all honesty, it’s been hectic. Good hectic. I feel like I’ve achieved a lot, learned a lot and I know I’ve helped a lot. You’ve seen me, I’ve seen you - we’ve done this year together! If you are heading towards the finish line, well done. I hope you get some time to reflect on everything you’ve achieved - even if everything was just getting your kids through... remote learning. Even if everything was not at all what you hoped or planned - you’re not alone! If you’d asked me a few months ago what the word of the year was, I’d have said something like ‘unprecedented’ but as the year draws to a close and I reflect on more recent conversations, I’ve changed my mind. The word of the year is ’support’. That’s what I keep hearing over and over and that’s what I see and feel. Support. For people in need, for local businesses, for families. In the form of a shoulder to cry on, in payments from the government, in staying local for Christmas shopping. We may have been stressed out of our minds, but we’ve been kind. At least in the circles I move. So cheers to the end of the year and to YOU. I wish you a merry Christmas and I thank you for all your support this year. The connections I make through the work I do is really special. I hope that I can convey that in this video, in between the ‘ums’ as I had to do it in one take I’m going to try and take a holiday but I did manage to prepare some good tips for you over the next few weeks and I will try and check in with some fun stuff too and of course I’ll be checking in to see what you’re all up to. Take a break, regroup and come out swinging in 2021. Erika . #bettersocial #socialmediastrategy #thankyou #christmas2020 #supportlocal

21.01.2022 How can we help small businesses reopen as smoothly as possible? Looking at images this morning of people crowding into major retailers got me thinking about this return to ‘normal’ and the impacts of millions of Melburnians rushing out of their homes. From my perch in regional Victoria I’ve already seen what it’s like for businesses to reopen to only their local crowds. I can’t imagine adding a few zeroes to those numbers ... With that in mind, here are a few things I think we could all do to make this transition as smooth as possible. Please feel free to add your thoughts in the comments. Cafés might be a little rusty on the service front. It’s likely they won’t have their usual menu, nor their usual staff so they might be training on the job. Tables are time limited so book the way they want you to - online or by phone. Experience tells me that sending a DM to their socials is definitely not the way to book anything. Just turning up and asking for a table might also put extra pressure on them. They won’t want to turn you away! Be kind, be patient and when you leave give them a glowing review on Trip Advisor, Google and Facebook. Shops will have stock they need to shift first. Pay attention to their sales sections. They may not have a big range of sizes like they usually do. Post a photo of your purchases and tag them so they can share your post. Write a review of the store on Google or Facebook. Be kind, be patient and stick to their rules - sanitising and any other special conditions. They’ve spent time developing a safety plan and that might mean you have to wait a few minutes out the front of the store till the numbers are right. Seek out your smaller grocers and specialty food stores, the supermarkets have been totally fine with delivery and click and collect. If you can, support small now that you can explore further. Plan your trips and book ahead. If you’re visiting another region, remember that they have limits on things like seating too. Don’t just turn up on a day tripyou won’t be the only one. Use their local tourism guides and websites to plan or simply hit the ‘places’ search in Instagram and find all the things you want to do and then book so you’re not left disappointed or hungry. One last thing, if there’s a big queue where you want to go, maybe go to the place down the road this time. Queues tend to attract more people because they see it as a sign that the quality is best there but that’s not always true. Spread your love and your money around if you can. #shopsmall #supportsmallbusiness

20.01.2022 Well I’m super pumped about Pantone’s colour of the year for 2021 I get to be on trend for a whole year #winning

18.01.2022 Had a very funny conversation with some working mums today about how we deal with frustration around the kidlets. It evolved into a discussion about replacement swears and I’m still laughing. Shiitake mushrooms has come out of my mouth a few times but the one that gave me the giggles today was William Shatner ahh maybe it’s just me? I think I’m going to adopt it. My friends know I’m a little sweary but I’m reasonably good at keeping it nice around kids and clients ... So indulge me if you will...what do you turn your swears into? . #swearing #swearjar #workingmumlife #mumsinbusiness

15.01.2022 Facebook’s Creator Studio just got even better with an embedded Instagram calendar. In my opinion, a brilliant addition, especially at this time of year as I’m sitting here scheduling content If you’re not using Creator Studio yet, why not go in and check it out. There are a few bumps and glitches to iron out but I’m kinda loving it and I’m saving money on my regular scheduling apps too.... Writing great content in advance and seeing it ready to go really takes the pain out of marketing your own business Hands up if you want me to do a little guide to Creator Studio webinar in the new year? . #bettersocial #instagramlove #creators

10.01.2022 I don’t know if I’m being optimistic, pessimistic or realistic about 2021. Perhaps it’s all three. I’m not making any resolutions but I am taking all my learnings into the new year. Maybe this is a controversial statement but I didn’t hate 2020 I’m not fist pumping that it’s over because I think there is more to come. More work, more support, more friendship, more change...more There are many of you that have had an extremely successful year and that’s nothing to be... ashamed of. There are many of you who loved having your kids home more and felt it strengthened relationships with your family and with your neighbours. That’s something to celebrate. There are many of you who experienced crushing losses and even terror over these days last year. But these things that drove us apart also brought us closer. That’s something to be grateful for. same ocean, different boat was a phrase I heard a lot in 2020 and it’s true but then it’s always been true. This year I’m building a to-do list that has a lot of wriggle room because the realist / pessimist is remaining open to the possibility of another remote learning session with my kids. The headline of my own business strategy for 2021 is ‘the tentative flexible itinerary for 2021’ because one of my learnings from this year is that plans change and even destinations change but I have to find joy in the paths I take. If there’s no joy, I have to be able to take a different direction to find it. My hope for now is that all of you have had some time with family and friends to catch up, reflect and celebrate the wins. Stay safe! . #bettersocial #newyear #newyear2021 #smallbusiness

10.01.2022 Making your insta accessible. Why? Because it’s kind. There are over half a million visually impaired Australians and it’s likely some or many of them are using social media. Depending on the level of need, they may be using a screen reader which can read out captions, hashtags and comments and also things like video captions. But they aren’t able to give the ‘look or vibe’ of an image unless you put that description in the little-known ‘alt text’ section.... You may have seen people putting photo descriptions into their captions which is nice but it takes up valuable characters and also ‘flips’ the experience - not knowing what the image is until after the caption. Putting the description into alt text also means that your audience has the choice of reading the description, rather than being able to hear the caption and move on. *edit* on my Instagram post I was corrected here to say that not everyone with vision impairment uses a screen reader so using both is best if you have characters left. If you’re keen, you can retrofit this by editing previous posts. At the bottom right of the image it will say ‘edit alt text’. When uploading your content in future you can scroll right down past the sharing settings to ‘advanced settings’ and then again to the bottom of that where you’ll find ‘accessibility’ and ‘write alt text’. Somewhat ironic that it’s so hard to find The other good news is that the algorithm can also read your alt text to get an idea of what your image is ‘about’ more than just what it is. For example it might use image recognition to note that this post has an illustration but I can describe it better a bright yellow background with the words do you see what I see and an illustration of a pair of glasses with blue lenses. At the bottom right of the images is the phrase better social. Save this post to remind you and please spread the word about alt text. . #bettersocial #visuallyimpaired #makeiteasy

07.01.2022 If you’ve got some time to work ‘on’ the biz over Summer, grab a copy of my Content Smash workbook. It will help you identify and understand your audiences (existing and target) and it will teach you how to write content that engages and converts. I’ve had lots of great feedback over the past few weeks. Most people saying they weren’t expecting so much detail...and so much work But if you want to use social media for free, you’ve got to be prepared to show up and market yo...urself. You can download a copy via the link in my bio. It’s $27. It’s something you can use over and over again, even as your business grows and changes. Fun fact: I went through this workbook myself before I launched it and my own content has had a dramatic improvement (you may have noticed ). I’m posting more, my engagement has improved, my reach is up and I’ve had a heap more messages, saves and follows. I have also connected with and am going to be collaborating with some ace businesses in 2021. Hand on heart I actually gave myself a good kick in the bum with this book. I hope you can too. Enjoy . #bettersocial #contentsmash

06.01.2022 Ever found it confusing that Facebook pages have ‘likes’ and ‘follows’? Well you’re not alone and Facebook has listened. Watch for a new business page layout coming soon AND the removal of the ‘likes’ button. Before you freak out, it’s just being changed to ‘follow’ so the numbers are not disappearing entirely. From what I can gather, this means anyone who has liked your page but has unfollowed it will no longer be following it but it will retain all your page follows. It wi...ll also retain the preferences that people have to ‘see first’ so you shouldn’t lose track of anyone who genuinely likes your page and content. . #bettersocial #facebookupdate #facebooktips #socialmediatips #socialmediatipsandtricks #facebookforbusiness

05.01.2022 Want to make some changes in 2021 but not sure where to start? May I suggest you start with your customers? One of the brilliant things about social media is the way you can have authentic direct conversations with your customers and would-be customers. ... Try asking them what they want or need. You can do it in the feed and many people do, but remember the answers are public. Three reasons why I don’t love that tactic: 1. It makes you accountable and there may be a lot of suggestions for something you don’t want to or can’t do. 2. It’s public which means your competitors can see it. 3. You might get no answers A few ways to get around that: Ask if people could do a short survey (use survey monkey or google forms). Direct message select customers. Ask them to private message their responses. Use the question answer prompt in Stories. Email your database or your previous customers. Offer a reward or discount in return for completing the survey (previous customers are more likely to use the discount and also give you honest answers). If you can, be specific in your requests and be succinct. Asking really open questions like what should I do? makes it hard to answer. Would you prefer X or Y? is much easier and more helpful for you. Going into this process with some idea of direction is important. Product and service development can be a stressful process, but if you have an engaged audience and they feel they are contributing then they are more likely to be interested in purchasing. 03.01.2022 Having trouble writing captions? Set yourself a little checklist so all you have to do is find something to say. Firstly what style of caption are you looking for? Conversational (storytelling) or conversion (informative or sales)?... Secondly who is your target audience for the caption? This will help you with direction and tone. Now structure your post to go a little something like: Headline - Draw people to ‘read more’. Body text - Don’t forget keywords to help you with search and to keep you on track. Call to action - What do you want people to do? This will also help you with your writing. For instance, if you want people to save your post then create a reason to do that. If you want them to message you then hold something back or invite them to message you. Sign off - End your post however you like, with a call to action or with your name or a thanks or whatever you think works. Hashtags - Scroll back in my feed if you need help with hashtags or message me and I’ll point you in the right direction Now rinse and repeat but of course don’t be too formulaic, this is a guide only. Happy Monday lovely people. Save this for l8ter Erika . #bettersocial #captions

02.01.2022 Couldn’t resist this as an earworm for today and to lead into a couple of reminders. The competition to win a mentoring/training pack from me is closing in a few days - head to the post with the ghosts to enter or share with someone you know who needs help with their business social media. The other important thing is that I’m planning on taking a chunk of leave at the end of the year. I had planned to do it last year but a week in I got called back to work because of the bus...hfires. Why am I telling you this? Well I’m not doing any one on ones from the end of November until mid January. So if you wanna get with me, better make it fast Fingers crossed we’ll be able to have in-person meetings, workshops and conferences again next year . . #bettersocial #socialmediaworkshop #socialmediaworkshops

02.01.2022 5 tips for local retailers in 2021. Last year was certainly a rollercoaster for retailers. Many of you who already had a strong online presence thrived in the new conditions but there were a lot of small ‘shops’ who struggled to get their business online in a way that was useful to their customers and themselves. Thankfully the government provided financial assistance to make these changes, but in regional areas there was often a big wait time for good digital services ... One of the biggest concerns I hear from my clients is that they can’t compete on price when it comes to online shopping. In fact, with major retailers like Amazon in the mix, most businesses can’t compete on price or delivery or range. But that’s not new and it doesn’t mean that you can’t have a successful and profitable small business that operates online and/or in a bricks and mortar store. This year is a good time to change your expectations and adapt your business plan to this new ‘normal’ because all the industry experts are predicting that retail has changed forever. Here are a few thought starters: Learn how - There are countless ways to learn from genuine experts and from people who have done this before. You might be surprised at how generous people can be with their knowledge, you just have to ask. Know your customers - Get familiar with social media and use it to watch your audience to see what they are doing/wearing/wanting/talking about. Watch for trends and forecasts. Ask them questions. Consider ’niching’ your products to suit your biggest and most receptive audience or to fill a gap. Add value - Prioritise your customers’ experience online and in-store using new or old techniques like retargeting, loyalty programs, personal notes, birthday gifts, VIP sales and more. Use data - Set yourself up for success by implementing data capture techniques and actually using that information to stay ahead of your competition and in touch with your customers’ wants and needs. Maybe that sentence scares the heck out of you but I promise with a bit of help you can learn how to understand your website and social media analytics. Or you get someone to help you - just be sure they are genuine. Encourage loyalty - The easiest customer to convert is the one who has purchased from you before. Can you create a subscription for your products? You don’t have to be the biggest but you do have to *add value* to your customers to compete with things like price. The best way to get started with that is to understand them and know what they want and need. If you want to tidy up your online presence this year, please sign up for my newsletter (link in the comments). Unless I find myself remote schooling again, I’ll be launching a series of really accessible, smart resources and I’d like you to be the first to hear about them. . #bettersocial #smallbusinesstips #ruralbusiness #gippsland #regionalvictoria #onlinemarketing

02.01.2022 Pinch and zoom. That wasn’t too hard was it? But have you ever actually read the terms of using some of these social media channels? You know you should Last week I was contacted by a person who had been trying to get back her Instagram account for weeks. It had just disappeared because it had ‘violated the terms of use’. No further explanation was presented.... It took me a few days to work it out because I was looking in the wrong places but then I found the answer in the fine print; You are not allowed use a domain name or URL in your username without our prior written consent. At least now we know what happened and are a little more hopeful of getting it back. If you or someone you know is using their website URL in their social media handle, maybe give them a heads up and save them a huge headache. Erika . #bettersocial #communityguidelines #fineprint
