23.01.2022 Have you ever wondered why you ‘drink’ so many cups of tea when playing with your child? This is actually them learning and repeating a play sequence. Play sequences are the stories in play, the steps a child will follow when they play. This will often start as one simple sequence, which becomes two or three sequences put together, and eventually leads to hours or even days of play. An example of this would be an empty cup, which would lead to pouring, stirring and then drink...ing the tea, and finally being able to put many sequences together to have a tea party. Play sequences help your child follow and maintain routines tell a story logically Develop skills needed for comprehension and reading Remember to play with your child, follow their lead and have fun - and having one hundred cups of tea is never a bad thing, repetition is key! Be sure to speak with your therapist for some more helpful tips on play sequencing.

22.01.2022 THESE FOUR LETTERS ARE EASY TO MIX UP FOR SOME STUDENTS BECAUSE THEY ALL CONSIST OF A LINE AND A CIRCLE At a quick glance a student may say "big" when the word ...is actually "dig". Some students learn compensating tactics to know which letter is which because merely looking at the letter they don't know. This can be very difficult for some students not only in reading but in writing as well. See more

21.01.2022 Join our team! The Macarthur Paediatric Occupational Therapy team spent the first day of the school holidays reviewing the first six months of 2020. We explored what we have been doing well and what we wish to develop. We looked at who is presently in our team and we felt it was time to grow again. If you are an enthusiastic occupational therapist or speech pathologist who wants to specialise in paediatrics please contact us. Part time and full time options are available.

19.01.2022 Play is the occupation of choice for your child, play and engaging in play with you and others benefits them in so many ways!

19.01.2022 Following on from our previous post on play, social play is an important part of developing skills and making connections with others. We are social beings and the recent pandemic has made this more difficult for everyone. It is still important to understand the benefits of social play but ensuring we are keeping safe and following health protocols too!

19.01.2022 In Australia, 30-40% of a child’s time awake is spent using a device for entertainment purposes, here are our top five tips for managing screen time in your home (not just for the kids but for you too): 1. Model good habits - if you spend all your time on screens, you can’t expect your child not to 2. Set a device curfew - no screens before school or after dinner 3. Have ‘device-free’ zones - no devices in bedrooms or at the dinner table... 4. Use parental controls and set screen time limits on your child’s devices 5. Incorporate what your child does ‘on-screen’ into ‘off-screen’ life - colour or draw their favourite TV character, or do a craft activity using their favourite video game Remember, when you set rules, stick to them! And be sure to always monitor what your child is doing on their screen.

15.01.2022 The September school holidays are fast approaching and MPOT are excited to host another round of groups for our clients to enjoy! We are hosting two groups catering to ages 5-13 years of age. Your child can attend multiple days or just one or two. 11.01.2022 We are excited to share that we will be running small holiday groups this July! It will be a maximum of 6 clients per group and we will do our best to offer multiple sessions as needed. See the flyer for further information! EDIT: We’ve added more details about the dates and times.

11.01.2022 We see a magic wand, or perhaps a fishing rod. What do you see? Object substitution is one of the most important parts of play, and can benefit children in many ways. It involves the use of one object in place of another, like using a stick as a magic wand, or a block as a phone. Substituting objects is key in pretend play, and is a skill most people would use almost every day. For example, if you don’t have a ruler to help in drawing a straight line you may use the side of a book in its place. Next time your child is playing, try and encourage their imagination and use some object substitutes! Speak to your therapist for more suggestions.

10.01.2022 Mental Health is important to us here at MPOT. October is Mental Health awareness month and this years theme is tuning in! Why not take some time to 'tune in' to your senses, community and stigma surrounding mental health to be better role models for our children! MPOT staff have been focusing on our own well-being using strategies such as 'traffic lights' being able to indicate when we are thriving or just surviving and ways to access or receive support.

10.01.2022 The September holidays are fast approaching so don’t forget to register for Macarthur Paediatric Occupational Therapy’s groups. In September we are offering Art Warriors and Life Leapers. Talk to your therapist about times and days that suit your child. In one of the groups they will be planning a picnic! This school holidays we don’t have to spend all our time inside, following social distancing protocols there are many things to see and do! Many of us at MPOT are eager to... have some time outside our homes and enjoy the warmer weather. Why not plan a real picnic and go exploring! Narelle has been out and about and has shared her most recent adventure! ‘I like to call into Cataract Dam periodically just to check out the water levels. Over the past few years, I have seen the levels drop and small islands pop up. But on my last visit the islands are covered and the water is so close to the top thanks to the rain'. How awesome is that!? Why not take a drive and enjoy the area. The are many dams to visit that are not far away. Each have unique park areas and space to walk and play. Enjoy the time out and fun in the sun!

09.01.2022 Cathy Love has helped the team at MPOT navigate the waters of building our practice. Here is the captain of our ship talking about her journey and preparing us to be the best therapists we can for our families!
