22.01.2022 Welcome to the month of August! August’s birth flower gets its name from the Latin ‘gladius’, meaning ‘sword’, which is why you may have heard it called ‘sword-lily’. The name, in fact is a reference to the sword-swinging gladiators of ancient Rome. Back then, when gladiators literally fought to the death in the arena, the victor was showered in gladioli. It is for this reason that gladioli are said to embody strength, generosity and moral integrity.

19.01.2022 It's National Grandparents Day... Grandparents Day is held every year on the last Sunday in October and celebrates the role that grandparents play in our society, both the things they have done and the things they keep doing. Do you have a special memory of your grandparents?

18.01.2022 The marigold is the birth flower for October. With their golden blooms and spicy scent, marigolds are a favourite with many keen gardeners. As one of autumn’s hardiest flowers, the marigold is said to represent a stubborn determination to succeed. If your birthday is in October, you’re probably driven, passionate and creative just like your birth flower.

18.01.2022 Welcome to September and the official start to Spring!! September’s birth flower is the aster which is said to represent both love and daintiness. The flowers are also associated with wisdom, valour and faith, making them a great choice for dear friends and family members. Reminiscent of a daisy, the aster is named after the Greek word for ‘star’ and, if you look at the shape of the flower, it’s clear to see why.

14.01.2022 Here's a magnificent eagle who joined us for our Ground-breaking Ceremony in February. Uncle Ivan, Aboriginal elder explained Aboriginal people have a deep connection with country, its animals, plants and places. They believe that the spirits of their Dreamtime ancestors, who walked the earth in a time before time, still dwell in sacred places on country, as do the spirits of the 2,000 generations of people who lived before them. These ancestral spirits can be found in ancient trees, rock formations and also native animals.

10.01.2022 Catholic Cemeteries + Crematoria have reviewed the All Souls Day masses in line with current NSW Health guidance. This decision has not been easy, given our religious observations for this holy day, however it is an important one to ensure the health and safety of our families and communities. As a result, please note that All Souls Day masses across all our cemetery locations have been cancelled. In place of these events, a pre-recorded mass will be available on our... website on 2nd November that can be viewed at any time at your convenience. For those visiting graves over the All Souls Day weekend, please note that under the public health order no more than 20 people can gather outside in a public place. We thank you for your understanding. See more

05.01.2022 These buildings and their remnants served practical functions for the property of Varroville, which was established in 1810. They were constructed in stages during the 19th and the 20th centuries and include a barn, dairy, wool press, water tank and quarters for horse-drawn carriages, which was converted into a shed for machinery. The cottage and slab hut provided accommodation. The timber slab hut may have been occupied firstly by the eminent scholar and scientist, Robert Townson (1762-1827), while he established the property. The buildings convey the different ways people have lived and worked, as well as methods of construction and design and will be restored as part of the Macarthur Memorial Park project.

04.01.2022 A November birthday just begs to be celebrated with a bouquet of chrysanthemums this month’s birth flower. First cultivated in China in the 15th century BC, the chrysanthemum has a long and fascinating history. Today it is one of the world’s most popular cut-flowers, owing to its variety and versatility. Chrysanthemums come in a whole host of different colours, each one with their own symbolic meaning. Typically though, November’s birth flower represents friendship and ...well-wishing. Chrysanthemums are also thought to bring good luck and joy into the home. In Japan, the flower is so revered it has a special day dedicated to its honour. Chrysanthemum Day, also known as the Festival of Happiness, is celebrated on 9th September annually. See more
