25.01.2022 There are 3 parts to taking care of your dogs teeth: 1) Regular tooth brushing 2) A special food that works like a toothbrush 3) Regular check-ups with your vet every 6 months or AT LEAST once a year
24.01.2022 You know that feeling when you come out of the dentist after a teeth clean? That smooth, fresh, extra clean polish-y feeling? Well our pets deserve the same treatment! At your pet's annual vet health check, our vets have a look inside their mouth and teeth to assess if there is any decay, or signs of dental disease. A scale and polish is recommended if homecare is hard or difficult to maintain. This gorgeous dog had a scale and polish of his teeth and just have a look at the difference. If you think your pet needs their mouth checked - give us a call.

21.01.2022 Diabetes in pets November is Diabetes awareness month, so we’d like to highlight the seriousness of this disease, make you aware of signs and symptoms and the various treatments to help manage.
21.01.2022 Its a scary statistic isnt it! But as we reiterate, dental disease is one of the most common problems in dogs and cats, but it often goes undetected. The problem is plaque, the layer of bacteria and food particles that forms on the teeth. Tartar develops when this calcifies and hardens. Plaque causes gingivitis infection of the gums. Left untreated, it leads to periodontitis, where the infection gets into the tooth roots and damages the ligaments and bones that support t...he teeth. Eventually tooth loss occurs. Bacteria can also enter the bloodstream and cause other problems including heart and kidney disease. Along with visiting us once a year for a dental check - you can also offer your pet Greenies dental treats daily. They help to fight the plaque and tartar and helps to freshen their breath!

Flea are a serious problem for both cats and dogs. Apart from the obvious pain and irritation of flea bites, it can lead to a serious skin problem known as flea allergy dermatitis. Bravecto spot on is long-lasting protection. Just two doses provide full year protection against fleas and paralysis ticks. It provid...es a great alternative for dogs that don’t like tablets or where longer lasting protection is required. #bravectoau

18.01.2022 Plants Toxic to Dogs and Cats Now that we have officially entered spring - here is some more info about some plants that have the potential to make dogs and cats very sick Lilies... These flowers may result in acute renal failure and subsequent death if inadvertently consumed by cats. Be sure to remove lilies from indoor flower arrangements and do not plant lilies in your garden if your cats spend time outdoors. All parts of the flower are considered toxic and disease can result simply from your cat grooming pollen off a contaminated coat or chewing the leaves without eating any of it. Aloe Vera When the Aloe Vera plant is consumed it can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Shampoos containing Aloe Vera (such as Aloveen) are quite safe, however direct application of Aloe Vera oil/extract to the skin is NOT considered safe. Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow Plant Brunfelsia Australis or Grandiflora This plant has emerged as a very common cause of seizures due to toxicity in dogs (particularly in the Wollongong and Shellharbour areas). All parts of the plant are potentially toxic but the leaves and flower heads appear to be particularly tasty to dogs and may be consumed in large quantities. Signs of toxicity include drooling, gagging, agitation and anxiety potentially progressing to life threatening convulsions. Marijuana Consumption of the leaves of a marijuana plant, hash cookies or simply passive inhalation of smoke can result in toxicity to dogs. This can be a frightening experience for dogs. Signs include dilated pupils, muscle tremors, loss of coordination, hyperactivity and hypersalivation. Signs can progress to bradycardia (a slowed heart rate), hypersensitivity and seizures.

15.01.2022 COVID-19 As you all know, there has been an increased amount of coronavirus cases in and around Sydney. Our clinics maintain the highest standards of cleanliness, and we continue to adhere to strict social distancing. Only one person will be permitted in the consulting room with the vet. Social distancing will be observed, which may mean staff members examining your pet in the treatment area, rather than in the consult room with you holding the pet. We still are asking f...or people to call the clinic on the dedicated numbers provided when you arrive for your appointment, rather than having too many people in the waiting room. Were doing everything we can to make sure you wont be left waiting in the cold! The space between appointment times has been increased, in attempt to reduce waiting overall for consultations. Video consults are now longer available. If you have any questions or concerns relating to Covid-19 and our business, then please dont hesitate to get in contact with one of our partners. Please head to our blog on our Covid procedures that we wrote in June. Our procedures and protocols have not changed (except for video consults), and we are still doing everything in our power to ensure everyones safety. And remember, even during such difficult times - your family pet is in SAFE hands! https://www.macarthurvet.com.au/covid-19-coronavirus-updat/
15.01.2022 Keep your pets cool Weather is certainly warming up here in Sydney, and the next two days are going to be extremely hot. Now is the time to ensure our pets are kept cool and comfortable if we are not at home. Icey kong treats are great for your dog to keep cool and play with on those hot summer days. Consider bringing your pets inside when the weather is too hot to stay outside. ... Stay safe and hyrdrated everyone!
14.01.2022 Snake Bites Isnt spring a beautiful time of year! But living in a our "semi-rural area" means we need to be vigilant and aware of our surroundings in the warmer months for snakes and spiders and insects such as bees. Snake Bites can be a serious problem. Here are a few tips to remember:... 1) You should identify the snake if at all possible (remember that its illegal to kill them though). 2) If you know your pet has been bitten by a venomous snake such as a brown snake, red-bellied black snake or tiger snake, you need immediate veterinary help. 3) If youve seen the snake but arent sure if your pet has been bitten, look for signs such as collapse, breathing difficulties, weakness, tremors and convulsions, vomiting, loss of balance and dilated pupils. 4) Your pet should be rested and if you know that it has been bitten on the leg, apply a pressure bandage. 5) Keep your garden cleared of long grass and debris, dont leave clothes and towels on the floor. 6) We also recommend walking your pet on a leash to limit the likelihood of them encountering snakes and take extra care when bush-walking, particularly heading to the beach. The good news is that snake venom detection kits for animals are available, so immediate veterinary attention is recommended for the best results. Hospitalisation and intensive supportive treatment is often required. 14.01.2022 Vaccinations are Important! Vaccinations.......one of the most controversial topics in the human world! BUT, as part of responsible pet ownership, vaccinations protect your pet against potentially fatal viral and bacterial diseases. Our vets perform annual health checks and as part of their health check, we give the appropriate vaccinations. Once were satisfied that your pet is in generally good health, the vaccination will be given. ... Check out our blog below https://www.macarthurvet.com.au/importance-of-vaccinations/

11.01.2022 FUN FACT FRIDAY! The Macarthur Veterinary Hospital and Bradbury Veterinary Clinic were purchased in 1992 by Drs Jacob and Margaret Michelsen. Macarthur was only a small cottage at the time with one small waiting room. Bradbury was a converted house in Waminda Avenue, Campbelltown. Dr Cathy Irwin joined Jacob and Margaret at Bradbury in 1995, becoming a partner in 1999. Extensive renovations were undertaken at Macarthur Vet Clinic while the Bradbury clinic was relocated to new purpose-built premises in Jacaranda Avenue in 2000. Our wonderful Bradbury clinic has been in operation now for 21 years!

03.01.2022 DENTAL DISEASE When was the last time you looked in your pets mouth? Every year, we spend a few months outlining and educating the importance of dental health and oral hygiene. But in reality, this should be discussed all year round. Did you know that when a cat or dog has dental disease, it often goes undetected? Why? Because a pet with dental disease is in pain long before they stop eating. 03.01.2022 R U OK? R U OK? day is today. Its our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, Are you OK? if someone in your world is struggling with lifes ups and downs. 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us.... You dont have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says theyre not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before theyre in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life. R U OK? #RUOK?
