24.01.2022 Shamus did a demonstration today at a Primary school. Did exceptionally well. Therapy dogs are very different from Assistance dogs, the basic training is the same, but the big difference is that an Assistance dogs ignores the public, staying focused on their people. A therapy dog on the other hand focuses on the people around them. A true therapy dog can detect when a person, which they dont know, is struggling... indicate to the handler that they have idenfified a person in... need and begin to provide support. A therapy dog is not just an overly friendly dog, that goes to anyone, they should act more like a detection dog... working the crowd to identify those in need
21.01.2022 PARVO OUT BREAK IN THE WHEATBELT... please becareful... there is a significant out break in toodyay and Beverley.. Please understand that just because your dog is vaccinated does not mean its immune...... Stay AWAY from dog parks, DONT LET YOUR DOG meet any other dogs... its a virus, keep your dog safe... this disease is fatal and hits very quickly..... Please socially distance your dogs and avoid high traffic dog areas
21.01.2022 I am so proud of the dogs which pass through our program... the photo is of Julie on her first day with her placement. A successful racing dog, see video in th...e comments because i cant do photos and video together. She means the world to her little man. In fact hes stated to his parents that this christmas will be the best ever because his dog will be home full time. Training Assistance dogs is not about profit, it seriously should never be. Its about the changes a trainer and dog can make to someones life. I cringe at the 20,000 or 60,000... some people are being quoted... its just so wrong. There is no way any honest trainer can justify this figure. I have a great team, which either helps with the training or is handling therapy dogs in schools. We all get to see the difference a well trained dog makes to the lives of people who just need a bit of help to find out that life doesnt have to be so hard, and more importantly, they are not alone. It should also be noted that ANY dog which has the temperament and the trainability can become an assistance dog. Other companies are suggesting it has to be a certain breed or breeds. That is not legal, it just has to be a dog, big, small purebred or cross bred... the law does not and should never stipulate what dogs can be used. For those looking at getting an Assistance dog to improve their lives or that of a loved one... don't give up hope, there is help out there which can get you to having a certified dog, without the huge price tag
20.01.2022 I see the insanity of not having a dog under effective control is a world wide problem. Its behaviour like this that gets dogs banned from areas like the beach.
18.01.2022 Yep this is one of my own dogs doing something silly... Tonight ive shut down my company's chat rooms because it showed a dog which may well have been playing with its owner.. but the stupid generic voice over waffled on about mum.. assuming the dogs owner having strong coffee.. Ive had the misfortune of having to do a report which asks the court to distroy a dog.. ive also had the misfortune to have to raise the vein so that a lethal injection can be given to a dog.. ... Mindless social media posts which can lead to dogs being distroyed are not FUNNY.. if the dog is playing with its owners that is great... id watch it and enjoy... But a computer genrated voice talking bullshit is getting dogs killed on a daily basis... Dogs are being killed at record numbers because the owners think behaviours are funny and dont have the ability to start and stop playful behaviours.. the video i saw tonight was most likely a dog playing with its owners.. sold on to a corperation that added such a stupid and irresponsible over voice to make it anthropomorphic and thus funny.. Dogs die because of this garbage.. suggest you hold a dog which is being put to death because people found its behaviour funny, until they didnt find it funny, i have and its not pleasant..
16.01.2022 I've mentioned before that if classical conditioning and operant conditioning occur at the same time, the classical will be learnt. Common one is teaching a dog to sit using a treat where the treat is always delivered in front... what you see is even from the heel posision..ie the side, the dog moves infront of the handler for the sit. Problem is not the use of treats its what is being rewarded. If you want a sit with the dog by your side that is what you should reward...BUT ...if you always reward a sit when its in front of you, classical conditioning means to the dog sit means park my butt in front. Classical conditioning which is basically stimulus and responce has occured. This week one of my clients who has a mobility issue, pointed out to me that she could not remotely send the dog outside or send the dog to its bed, unless she went with him.. the dog had been trained to do both, so i found it suprising that this had become a problem... it was only after i watched the client that i saw that classical conditioning had become a problem Let me state VERY clearly the client had done nothing other than make sure she was safe. Her balance is not great, the dog bumping into her may precipitate a fall, so while she was getting used to the dog she assumed a safe position..ie seated prior to asking the dog to get on his bed. Totally reasonable in the early stages of handling. Problem is classical conditioning now over rided the operant training. From the dogs perspective her being seated meant he needed to be on his bed. It took little time to reinforce that the dog needed to be on his bed whether the handler was seated or not.. but the dog needed to learn that the sequence was not important, the command was. If you do things in a certain way all the time, the dog will learn that sequence, change the sequence and the dog will not understand the command.. If you train the command under different sequences then the dog learns the command for what you want it to be. Sit means sit, be that in front, beside or 100m away sit should mean sit.. make sure you are operantly conditioning and only rewarding exactly what you have asked. If you ask for a sit at 30m and your dog runs to you... your dog has not learnt how to sit... its really simple..sit means sit, not come to me or move in front.. it means sit
15.01.2022 My house, dogs every where... asked a friend to recommend a cleaner.. my god the job this guy did... totally top class... If you are in Perth and need to have cleaning done at a more than reasonalble cost.. contact Eddie at Melita cleaning...0418922735... Stains that were on the carpet are no longer there.. totally professional, just a top business to deal with.
15.01.2022 There is a movement that you cannot say no to you're dog... this movement says that if you say no to your dog you are being negative... There is a major issue with this type of thinking... it is not science based.. no matter what they say. Operant condioning, or instrumental learning was developed by prof BFSkinner... His definition of positive was added.. not pleasant ..... positive was added and negative was removed or subtracted.. ... So how is saying no a negative.. you ADDED the no.. thus it is a positive, ie it was added... Saying no is not negative, nor is it an adversive.. stilwell, who is yet to EVER train a dog to any standard has stated no is an adversive an gone further. Actually stated that if you need to use an adversive you should kill the dog... This is just not true, Be very wary of anyone who states they are the "god of dog training" (see you tube she did state that).. especially when they have never.. i repeat... never trained a dog to any level.. despite saying she would.... Saying know to your dog, or even your child doesnt make you a control freak or a bad person..
14.01.2022 There is so much talk about socialisation... most is total crap... This morning a friend who is a professional trainer of 20 years experience, rang me about a seriously stupid member of the general public... a dog off lead in an area which is not declared as an off lead area.. Her excuse... its ok my dogs have been socialised... I've never heard anything more stupid... The law states you must have your dog under effective control at all times... there is NO exemption becaus...e you feel or believed your dog is socialised... The photo is of my 18 mth old dane who met a 4 year old for the first time... was i watching the interaction... of course i was he weighs over 70kg, she does not... Seriously read the law, under effective control AT ALL TIMES, puppy preschool, I r whatever other means you think your dog is socialised and thus it can approach any person or dog is purely delusional... These two enjoyed a great afternoon.. as have many others with young Eric... but it does not give me the right to allow him to interact with a dog or a person uninvited.. Effective control at all times is the law, not an option... it is the law
13.01.2022 My new chessie pup is hopefully being born... So impressed with Cassidy from the same breeder... Stay tuned... breeder will chose what comes over to me..... Margret, cass is an amazing lad, so look forward to another one... Would like to go one better than their grand father, but its a tough act to follow
10.01.2022 So proud of this lad
10.01.2022 There is so many ways to train a dog... If the trainer uses methods that are right for that individual dog, thats great, use what works.. The photo shows a section of the dogs i have in my house every single day... no fights, not vet bills... that does not make me great, it simply means my dogs are under effective control.... No that doesnt mean punishment, it means respect, not just to me but all the others who live in the house. These people who say to clients that saying no is a negative, actually need to learn what operant conditioning is, and how many dogs do they actually live with, not crated, not kennelled?... there are 24 dogs in my lounge room at the time of writing, 12 are entire males... Control is not a rude word, its actually a legal requirement. When a trainer says you cant say no, or that you MUST use a distractor.. to get a simple behaviour... ask how many dogs do they own.. what have they achieved as a trainer.. Honestly this industry is being guided by people who cannot even control their own personal dogs, who cannot have 20 dogs in a room while they eat their dinner... I have so much work on right now im really not trying to generate more work.. i asking, please ask your trainer what have they achieved, ask them how manydogs are they capable of dealing with at one time... ask them if they can distract a single dog in a group of dogs... The law is very specific... as a dog owner you MUST have your dog under effective control at all times... there is no grey area, there is no it wouldnt listen even thought i has treats or toys.. your dog MUST ve under effective control at all times or you are breaking the law.
09.01.2022 I get very concerned about the misinformation which is put out about assistance dogs. In the photo a really sweet GSD girl has been sent to us for training from... Victoria... it was a lot cheaper inclusive of the flights to have the dog sent here to do her training. Added to that, i spoke to a young lady in Queensland who has not even been given the most basic information on how to work with an alert.. Training an assistance dog has significant responsibilities... its not a job... its not about geting a dog to do an action, its about a bond and creating a partnership, between the dog and the person they are assisting. They need to be a team, all training should be geared towards them being a team... a trainer of assistance dogs needs to fully comprehend that its a very, very serious matter.... the clients life may well depend upon the trainer making sure that the client and the dog are a team. Any fool can teach a dog to respond to cues... the reality for assistance dogs is that they need to do it for real, when its needed and everytime its needed, cues or not
09.01.2022 Happy International dog day !!
08.01.2022 Im am seriously disturbed by some NDIS providers.. A fully certified Assistance dog has the same rights and should be given the same respect as a seeing eye dog...... Ive just had a phone call from a client who has a fully pat tested dog which the persons carers are treating more like a personal pet... getting the dog to sit up on their lap etc.. its an Assistance dog, it has a job to do... dont interfere with that job, dont give it treats.. i really dont care how cute the dog is... it has been trained to assist the disabled person... it has been given Government accreditation that it is working to improve the persons quality of life... butt out, do your job as a carer and do not interfere with the dog. I've been asked to do a information session re Assistance dogs.. feel free if you are thinking of having an assistance dog OR you are a carer of someone who has an assistance dog to attend.. it will be North of the river for Perth people.... will advise as soon as the venue is confirmed. To providers, let me be very clear, if your employees untrain a dog i have trained, i will be handing you the bill to retrain the dog... it is your responsibility to make sure your staff are trained to do their jobs... check the rights of an Assistance dog, if they would not have a seeing eye dog do the same thing...DON'T DO IT WITH AN ASSISTANCE DOG.. they have the SAME legal rights and BOTH preform tasks which help their owners live a better life
07.01.2022 Ok, the Perth Dane site seems to like to pushe ecollars over actual training... yep i have a problem with that.... The lady in question purchased a remote training collar from dogs line... Now i was there at the meeting with the WA Government... so was the owner of dogs line... there was three trainers with a combined experience of over 100 years... all of us as well as the industry representatives... stated non compliance collars are a problem...... The collar purchased is total crap and not fit for purpose.. it frankly does not work.. it has no brand and no complience number..... An idiot suggested that this lady could learn to use an rtc via Utube.. this is really scary.. i was at the meeting with the government... if anyone thinks an apparatus can substitute training... you are delusional.. Feel free to ask Grant Teeborn, or Seth pywell... ive sent them the info..
04.01.2022 The new Chessie boy, Stevie Ray.. Thanks Margaret, so looking forward to him arriving on the 15th
04.01.2022 There are so many Covid purchased dogs which are being handed in now to council's and rescue organisations... It's just so sad A dog is not just a purchase, it's a sentient being... It's not something you take on just for your needs, you should have thought about their needs and can you provide for them. Yes my pup is allowed with an invite to be on the furniture, just as the others in the room..that's my choice..not his.... Dog's need rules and structure, forget that and serious issues will happen, ignoring your dog's behaviour does have a place but your consistency as to what is allowed is of far greater importance Please never take on a dog if you are not going to provide a stable home for it.. your house rules can be different to mine, all the dog needs is consistency
03.01.2022 My father, a man i adored.. recieved an OAM for serivices to local Government. I'm not him, yet i run classess for assistance dogs, am not interested in NDIS ...funding.. people need help.. the bs about it costing 4 times what it costs for a police dog, the bs that it takes two years when at worst it takes 20 weeks to certify a police dog.. is total garbage. Our group classes are at no cost.. profiting or worse abusinging those that need an assistance dog is simply wrong. The charities who proport that they are helping those in need .. go look at their financial statements... less than a third actually gets to those who need.. thats wrong on all levels.. the NDIS or the DVA is not a slush fund. Im sure we aren't the only business who believes helping those in need is more important than profit... Please do your research
03.01.2022 Some news i got this week which absolutely turns my stomach... Charities, who take donations from the general public, on the basis that they are supplying dogs to people with a disability are charging the NDIS up to $75,000.00 to supply the dog to the person with a disability. These organisations get MILLIONS per year from the general public, based on the fact people believe they are helping to get someone a dog which will improve their quality of life... then they, the chari...ty, submit a bill to the NDIS for huge amounts of dollars... this is a charity??? Seriously the Fedral government needs to look into this... many people rely on the NDIS to get the services they need..... if Charities are then double dipping, guess why its so hard to get NDIS funding... How is it remotely reasonable that a charity can charge so much for a dog which has already been paid for by donations from the general public???
02.01.2022 Thank you to one of our wonderful clients who kindly gave us this mobility scooter. This will allow the in house trained dogs to learn to heel alongside such a ...scooter or even an electric wheelchair safely prior to hand over. On behalf of the team, thank you so much, your generosity allows us to help others
01.01.2022 Ive been stressing for years the need to consider the emotional state of dogs and in deed their handlers when trying to understand a behaviour. Our feelings bas...ically drive our brains. They become the prism through which we view, react to and interact with the world at that particular time. Anxiety is a classic example. Anxiety being an intangible fear, a fear of what if... this feeling and for as long as we are experiencing this feeling will impact on how we react, percieve or think about our world. There is no point at all in expecting a normal thought prossess from an individual who is in the anxious state, its simply not possible. Firstly we need to relieve the anxiety and then and only then can we begin to expect "normal" brain function. I highly recommend a book, The Hidden Spring, by Mark Solms, a South African neuroscience psychologist. In this work, backed up by a ton of research, hes proven that feelings originate from the brain stem in all vertebrates. These feelings basically drive the brain in the direction of which is most relevant to the feeling that is present. Yes higher functioning vertibrates such as mammals will be able through experience learn to operate differently to a fish.. but the initial brain response is the same. Anxiety is best addressed by having the individual feel more secure, many techniques can achieve this result depending on which species you are working with. This is one of the reasons why a client with an assistance dog will benifit greatly from feeling the dog close and slowly rhythmically stroking the dog.. it increases their sense of security.. as the sense of security increases normal thinking improves. All feelings impact on how the brain functions and it is not limited to cognitive function. Research shows all brain functions are impacted by how we feel. So.. its ok to not be ok and allowing the subject to emerge from the emotional state they are in before you try to address the behaviour is a must
