Originating in Champagne (a cool climate like ours) this sugar solution is commonly added to slow ripening vintages to balance the high acidity. Come on a journey of discovery - it’s not hard to find.... #repost @coolclimatewine Curly Flat, Pinot Noir, 2014, Macedon Ranges, Victoria, Australia I hope everyone is having a great bank holiday weekend despite it being a bit crap weather-wise here in England . Time for some Australian wine: This is the the second vintage I've tried of Curly Flat which I bought after the suggestion of @macedon_ranges_wanderer. Spoiler alert: I enjoyed this too. Curly Flat is in the Macedon Ranges near Lancefield (ca. 540m above sea level) approximately 70 mins minutes drive NNW of central Melbourne. Curly Flat have about 75% of their vineyard area planted to Pinot noir, the balance being Chardonnay and a small amount of Pinot Gris. No herbicides for ca. 15 years. Soils are "Volcanic Basalt & Upper Ordovician". Tasting note: Lovely translucent red, starting to show some developments toward a red-brick colour. On the nose deeper red fruits (strawberry) punctuated by a really attractive secondary character which is a little light roasted meat note and dates and mild spice. On the palate almost cashmere soft, well integrated tannins. Definitely the attractive darker-ripe strawberry theme (but not overly ripe - just so). Perhaps even a touch of grill / smoke. Really good length. Finishes with light and fine baking spices. Extremely enjoyable - came across as darker in tone than the 2012. Decanted into magnum decanter. Drunk over two nights in a Riedel New World Pinot Noir glass.
