25.01.2022 Pioneer Bonsai are proud to announce and host Stephen Cullum from Bonsai Foundations to a weekend workshop for our members.
24.01.2022 Swampy, started as an aerial lifted branch, see video for base, three (?) years in the bucket developing nebari, time to lift, check, ....and be happy. Dont even go there with the multiple branch apex!!
24.01.2022 Stephen Cullum's Bonsai Foundations Day 2. Thank you to all attendees for their input, enthusiasm, respect and fellowship.
24.01.2022 Clerodendrum heterophylla. No. 2. From the ground grown bed today, under training 5 yrs (?). First day in a training pot.
23.01.2022 Next weekend at my place Sunday 1-4. If youre wishing to join, PM me here for details.
22.01.2022 Australian "Billabong" style. Loosely translated means, " I cant find anything in a bonsai book that looks like this so Ill make up something to suit," 3... trees, 2 Mel. fluviatillis & a Mel. quinqenervia. Still in progression and just the lightest of trims and some directional wiring as I grow these out. See more
21.01.2022 Fukien Tea Tree project. 7-8 years old. Mountain top. All of the bottom seedlings are self seeded. "Mountain" is carved rendered Hebel. Pot is chicken mesh, hessian, cement fondu, colouring.
21.01.2022 Day 3, tree 3. Ficus hillii. This tree started, as we are taught, with horizontal branches and horizontal pads of leaves and a single trunkline. I commenced gr...owing it out of this style only a little more than a year ago so I have a ways to go, especially with the crown, but introducing randomness in branch placement has been successful, at least in my mind. No right way or wrong way just my decision to have trees that look like trees not bonsai. (Or maybe my way is the wrong way?) See more
21.01.2022 Day 4, tree 4. Ficus macro. 15years in training. Another tree started with left, right horizontal branches and foliage pads, and with a "bobblehead" to boot, a ...fault of the untrained bonsai-ist (thats me of course). Completely removed the top of the main centre trunk only around 6 months ago looking for a better style to suit, more natural. The side branch growth has taken off incredibly so bringing everything back to order and we start again for the new growing season. A few seasons will see this as a much better tree. See more
20.01.2022 Another great day to bonsai. Another great meet. Thank you all for the attendance and enthusiasm. Big things were accomplished today, with the results to show in the near future. A series of photos of today.
20.01.2022 Casuarina 5+1 thicket setting. Around 8-10 years old, way still developing and a change of heart 18 mths ago to associate with the style set me back a little. S...till attempting the multi branch apex and on a small forest scale it remains challenging as well. Three low elongated branches are a trial for a water pot I have in mind, they may not stay, nor may the idea. Fingertip pruning today, about to smash into spring so Ill trim after that and put on some wire. See more
20.01.2022 1st demo, Lilly Pilly.
20.01.2022 From trash to trainee. Portulacaria.
19.01.2022 Ficus macro. Trialling a South African style known as "Wonderboom" or "Elbow" where the out reaching boughs touch the ground and take root. Only 12 months in si...nce i was introduced to this style, thanks Barry Meiring for his direction. I have only defoliated the main tree as the boughs seem still to be struggling to gain strength against the upright growth of the main tree. Note the cluster of baby Assassin Beetles, keep them, theyre the good ones, back into the garden. See more
18.01.2022 Lophostemon, wire on wire off. Still training, growing out branches and first training under new style of multi branched apex. Wire off in prep of a spring prun...e back in a few weeks. This has always been a river swept style but had a single trunkline and flat horizontal pads, a far more casual randomness has been taken in this new design, early stages n all. See more
17.01.2022 Proud to be an amatuer. Accept where youre at. My first attempts at pots, experiments with clay, textures and shapes, pre-fired of course. Now down to Lindy at Eden Elements for her assistance in glazing and firing.
17.01.2022 Day 1, tree 1. Ficus hillii. Video 1 before, video 2 lime sulphured with toothbrush, video 3 defoliated, cleaned another 2 times. Now spring.... cmon.
17.01.2022 Fukien Tea Tree. 2 year-old cuttings. Natural coral rock formation with waterfall.
16.01.2022 See you this arvo
16.01.2022 Day 2, tree 2. Ficus benjamina, over Hebel temple, around 15 years old. Easy one, defoliation and a little wire. Before and after.
16.01.2022 Australian "Outback" style. Early stages, 7 year old Eucalyptus. Barry Meiring from Tondoon was again and inspiration for "starting" this style. Within Australia I think a "Billabong", a "Riverswept" and an "Outback" covers Old Australia now Baz, we start on Gondwana.
15.01.2022 Ficus virens, if like me, some of you have struggled in diminishing the leaf size of Ficus virens. I have twisted the new leaf sheath of many many times to no a...vail. Not to be repetitive I slowed down today for a closer inspection. Unlike, to my knowledge, the other large leaf figs the red new leaf sheath contains a single leaf inside and the with clever manipulation you can peel off a second sheath and reduce your leaf dramatically again. However on the virens I found that several red new leaf sheaths bound together with a leaf behind each one, man you had best have dextrous fingers to attempt this, I broke several leaves in my bumbling. I got to where 4 leaves where distinguishable within one red sheath. The test now will be to see how these leaves develop compared to others on the tree having been "unpeeled" See more
15.01.2022 Bougainvillea day at Pioneer Bonsai Mackay..... but we'll do other bonsai. Another great day.
13.01.2022 JBP. Another rescued from a too shady, too moist ground growing area. Around 6 years old, was always a "leggy" little tree but well call this a training pot to rebuild its health. Pot from Eden Elements, thanks Lyndy.
13.01.2022 So to follow up: the following has passed long term soaking, brittleness, and pH testing. I will be now mixing with Scoria and trialling in a pot for water retention. The Chandler branded has failed during testing.
13.01.2022 Stephen Cullum Weekend. Are you ready??
12.01.2022 Hi members, just letting you know current sources of Diatomite have deteriorated. Currently trialling these products, both have passed absorption and break down tests with ease, @ $7.00 a bag, it may present a new alternative to add to potting mix. Both from Woolworths.
11.01.2022 Next meet 29th Nov. we'll be going to the Airlie Beach club for last meet of the year. Mostly social and "show and tell" but you can bring along a tree to work on also. Should be a great day and we'll get to see some different trees. Hope you can make it.

07.01.2022 Good morning all, with no relief in sight on COVID restrictions it seems we are destined to have our meet at the Wattage Cottage yet again. This meet will entail the Annual General Meeting so you, most appropriately, can have your say on the future of the club. This also means a vote for the President position so if you wish to nominate yourself or someone else for the position, this is the day to do it. Please confirm with the appropriate person beforehand on nomination ...of the position and a second. With an approval in fee changes up for vote and starting a new financial year you should all bring with you $30.00 for the annual fee and $3.00 for the meet fee. $33.00 in total. Discussion on the benefits of joining can be had at the meet. You should all know how to get to my place now but instructions can be supplied to new members if necessary. If re-potting, conifers would be the preferred choice but in NQ just about anything can be attempted with warmer weather set for a change. If you intend to re-pot anything please consider; a new potting medium, a pot for the purpose, a bucket for the old potting medium currently in the pot, a container for leaf and branch removal and disposal, Wire for shaping if necessary, Tools for the purpose. And lastly due to COVID please bring your own water, hydration and /or food matter. Thanks and Regards Watty Michael Watt President 0414552067
06.01.2022 Juniper from the ground grown area, maybe only about 5 years old but still needed rescuing from the shade and damp. Just practice on this one wiring and shaping for a super long cascade, not sure Ill keep it all, it may be just sacrifice but it was fun to do.

03.01.2022 Ficus virens, both around 15 years grown from seedling. Both started training as left right back horizontal branches and foliage. 2 years ago I began re-trainin...g one with existing branches into more of a fig style and whatever new shoots developed, the other I took back to a single straight (ish) upright stump and trained whatever grew back into more of a fig design. You dont have to like em, I do. See more
03.01.2022 Each year I get a bonus crop of something growing under the bonsai. I always get Mel's/Calls and I have six in a group getting wild under the benches. So ... Ri...verbank style... trees affected by seasonal flooding as Callistemon are. Not final style ( obviously) not final pot (duhh). Just something to do with the excess. This is going as a gift to a Stockman mate who I know will love the concept. See more
03.01.2022 An casual day at Hedleys for a club meet today. Great trees, great company, heaps of projects going on. Spring has sprung. Happy bonsai-ing all.
02.01.2022 Pick a fig, any fig, defoliation done. Except the big one, only potted 6 months ago, it can sit for a bit. Raining today so the timing has been excellent.
02.01.2022 Meet this Sunday will be at private residence (Hedleys) down near Sarina Beach. 1-4pm. PM for details if you wish to join us.
