24.01.2022 From the Collection ..... Two photographs of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney (later to merge and become the National Australia Bank) building. These photos are from 1938 and the replacement building photographed during 1986. Situated in Sydney Street between Beirnes Pty Ltd, now J.M. McKay House and Mackay Spare Parts, now Alman Partners.

22.01.2022 From the Collection ..... Ian Wood, long serving Mayor of Mackay and Queensland Senator (1949 till 1978) riding his bicyle in Wood Street. Ian Wood gazzetted Eungella to be a National Park. He also established the 'Ian Wood Travel Service'.... He always rode his bicycle to work. He was a well-known figure in Mackay, even after he retired. Ian Wood later passed away in 1992.

22.01.2022 This recently uploaded film on the Queensland State Archives Facebook Page shows Mackay from 1979. Various buildings along with Caneland Shoppingtown, Forgan Bridge, Mackay Bulk Sugar Terminal, Mackay Harbour and the Racecourse Sugar Mill appear in the film. Various local and interstate businesses and firms operating in Mackay at the time also appear in the film.... Construction of the Ron Camm Bridge appears towards the end of the film, with Sugar Cane fields in the background. Construction of the bridge was completed during December 1979.

19.01.2022 From the Collection ....... This Christmas Eve (Dec. 24, 1990) marks 30 years since Michelmores ceased trading at this particular building in Victoria Street, and litterally became a part of history. The building was initally built for Fields - as Fields Shopping Centre. The Grand Opening was held on November 17, 1973. ... Later, on January 13, 1987 saw the announcmenet that rivals Fields and Michelmores were to merge. Michelmores's Department Store as a result, moved from its premises in Wood Street into Fields's premises in Victoria Street. Michelmores Department Store, were trading there in the Victoria Street building by March 12, 1987. The Dome Arcade, at the building later commenced trading on December 3, 1991. The Dome Arcade, was later officially opened on January 30, 1992. The Arcade was also home to The Blue Moose and Main Street Nightclubs. The Dudley Denny City Library, later opened at the site on December 17, 2016.

16.01.2022 Coming up this week ....... The next Mackay Historical Society Monthly meeting, will be held this Saturday November 7, 2020 from 2pm at the Mackay Museum at 4 Casey Ave, South Mackay. New Members are always welcome.... This meeting will be the final meeting of the society for 2020.

10.01.2022 From the Collection ....... This year marks 137 years since 'Charles Porter And Sons', now known around Mackay as 'Porters Mitre 10' began operating in Mackay - one of Mackay's longest established firms. The firm started on August 13, 1883 as a building contracting business. The current store was intially completed during 1974 in Brisbane Street and has been extended a couple of times since.... During 1979 - 1980 the firm opened new stores at Caneland Shoppingtown (1979) and Mt Pleasant Shopping Centre (1980), aswell as operating the Brisbane Street store, both Caneland and Mt Pleasant stores would later cease trading during the mid 1980s. The firm also operated a store at Rural View for sometime.
