21.01.2022 Biocontrol, which is the method of controlling pests by using other organisms, can be risky. A well-known example is introducing the cane toad to control the ca...ne beetle. Fortunately, there are many examples of the positive effects of biocontrol. Whitsunday Catchment Landcare Inc. Project Officer is seen here infecting healthy prickly pear plants with cactoblastis-infected cladodes. The cactoblastis moth pupae will eat the healthy plants from the inside out, helping us control the highly invasive prickly pear. For more information, contact Reef Catchments Pests and Weeds Officer: [email protected]

18.01.2022 Yellow Crazy Ants have been found in the Whitsundays. Most commonly detected around port areas, the yellow crazy ant is listed as one of the world's 100 worst i...nvasive alien species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Native to Africa, its name comes from its erratic walking style and frantic movements, especially when disturbed. Yellow crazy ants can disrupt natural environments, affect the horticulture industry, and cause skin and eye irritations. Further information is available by contacting the Qld Dept Agriculture and Fisheries Customer Service Centre by phone (13 25 23) or by email ([email protected]). A fact sheet & risk assessment is available at: https://www.business.qld.gov.au//restrict/yellow-crazy-ant

05.01.2022 For those who missed the Madeira vine information session at Finch Hatton yesterday, Madeira vine is a vigorous climber that can produce thousands of aerial tub...ers along its stem. It is a serious environmental weed that can degrade intact native forests, completely altering the environments it dominates. It smothers trees, shrubs and understorey species. It can cause canopy collapse of mature trees due to weight of vine. It can grow as a ground cover, disrupting native seedling germination and growth. If you see any Madeira vine, particularly growing along waterways, please report it to Maria Ferraro - pest manager officer MRC - [email protected] - 0417608199 See more
