25.01.2022 The Shawn Claydon Memorial 5km & 10km was held in cool conditions from 7am from the new beautifully renovated Queens Park precincts. Upon leaving the Park, runners were faced with strong headwinds as they struggled on East Gordon Street toward Binnington Esplanade. The social event was in memory of local champion runner, Shawn Claydon who passed away two years ago from Pancreatic Cancer. The formal 10km Shawn Claydon Shield was not awarded this year due to COVID -19 restric...Continue reading

23.01.2022 Mackay Road Runners Flashback photo is the coveted annual Farmers Gallop 5km/17km in 2010 held from the inception of the Club in 1976. The Hosts for the event, Agnes and Fred (deceased) Farmer were dedicated volunteers and athletes of the Club. Fred reigned as the number one ultra marathon man in the region in the seventies and eighties, famous for his heavy steps and big heart. Sadly Fred has since passed away, however, his larger than life image (literally) that Agnes h...as at home will never be forgotten. Agnes was never a runner however, she supported Fred in his fanatical chosen sport of long distance running. Agnes would still be hosting the event this weekend from her Evans Avenue home, however, the COVID crisis has put a stop to it this year. The 17km morning run took in several suburbs including North Mackay, Slade Point, Andergrove, Beaconsfield and Mt Pleasant before returning to the finish line and the yummy post race treats that Agnes always so generously delivered, even though she was NOT a morning person!

22.01.2022 Mackay Road Runners was exceptionally grateful to the Scouts and the MAD Mountain Bike Club for the use of the Rowallan Park Mountain Bike trails where approximately forty runners found the early morning social event an amazing experience. The varying terrain included typical trail running challenges with runners tackling rocky descents, grassy slopes and slippery rainforest like conditions. Club President, Tim Magoffin welcomed new and existing members before handing over t...o Race Director and course marker, Leon Ryan. Leon has a bevy of endurance trail running experience under his belt including several interstate events over 100km. Junior runner, Alex Couldrey was sensational as he sizzled easily over the 5km course ahead of his more experienced peers and more importantly, his Dad. Father and son Daniel & Lachlan Walker in addition to Derek and Sam Woods were another couple of united family members enjoying the outdoors together. Exceptional performances also came from new club member Robin Stinson, Tahnie Malaguen and John Couldrey as they sped over the course ahead of Troy Allardyce, Stephen Oberg, Carmel Mahon, Jose Short, June Bradley, Martin Lambert, Jeanette Farrugia, Peter Ellison, Jo Ashford, Jim Ford and Murray Wonnocott. This Sundays Mackay Road Running social events continue with a 7am start at Bonsons Scrub Road, The Leap. Runners are requested to car pool at 6.15am at the Coningsby State School as there is limited parking at the Bonsons Scrub entry. Runners are to arrive 30 minutes prior to start time so that they can be registered in with the timekeeper and prepare their own warm up routine before the challenge of Ian Reddacliffe Drive. The 6km loop course is a favourite amongst runners, and for those who enjoy a challenge, the course will not disappoint. The midweek track sessions continue on Wednesday at 5.30pm at the Aquatic and Recreational Centre, Ooralea hosted by Club Captain Jim Ford....all welcome. The only fee is $3 for entry to the complexs excellent artificial surface running track. Check out the Mackay Road Runners online and on Facebook for updates and any changes to the 2020 formal calendar.

22.01.2022 Over fifty runners, walkers, volunteers and spectators met at the Bluewater Quay for a very social 5km and 10km run along the spectacular Sandfly Creek Trail towards Town Beach. Attracted by all the action, the trails namesake were out in force as they swarmed in clusters around the humans, however, this did not deter runners from enjoying their early morning dash along the river trails. Club President, Tim Magoffin welcomed several new runners and returning out of town ru...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Over thirty runners enjoyed the Shawn's Summer Social Series Teams concept organised by Mackay Road Runners Club Captain, Jim Ford. Jim allocated runners into teams via their potential so they could evenly compete to attain the most kilometres they could as a team in the sixty minute time limit. The multi option course left the Willis Street carpark near the spectacular Gooseponds parklands, heading towards the Mackay Harbour via the series of linked and continuous pathways ...along Evans Avenue and Harbour Road, North Mackay. The sunny, humid conditions prevailed for the entire event, however the usual zooper doopers were a welcome treat after their sensational efforts. The winning Team who took home the prestigious reward for the the most kilometres covered in sixty minutes were outstanding, however, all runners who performed well included Michael Shoer, Peter Ellison, Andrew Short, Darrin Pullen, Peter Ford, Jo Hughes, Jeanette Farrugia, Emma Johnson, Heli Talinurn, Bonnie Stutsel, Carolyn Steginga, Ashley Davies, Joe Grech, Carmel Mahon, Tim Caddy and Brenda Windsor. This Sunday's Shawn's Summer Series continues this Sunday at 5.30pm from the Hibiscus Shopping Centre carpark at Bucasia. Runners can expect a series of awesome scenic vistas as they forge their along Shoal Point Road towards the beach's rocky point before returning to the start via the spectacular Bucasia Beach shoreline. Jim has promised a low tide and a variety of running surfaces to test runners whilst enjoying the comrarderie of their like minded peers. Please be aware as the weather is proving typically stifling this time of year, inexperienced out of town and local runners are reminded to increase their hydration intake prior and post any arduous physical activity. In addition to newbie runners, experienced competitors should also be aware of their training load and upcoming events so that they are not overloading themselves towards their chosen goal events. Mackay Road Runner's quality coach Jim Ford also hosts every Wednesday 5.30pm, an informal free track training session at the Aquatic and Recreational Centre (ARC) at Ooralea. Track training is very beneficial for a myriad of individuals' sporting activities, enhancing health and fitness via co-ordination, technique, sprint and endurance skills. All welcome, whether a Mackay Road Runners member or not, the event is free except for the ARC entry fee of $3 payable at the Pool reception prior to entering the track precincts. Mackay Road Runners will meet for their Annual General Meeting in January, watch this space for date, venue and time. All committee positions are vacated and up for re-election, therefore, those interested in a formal position or informal assistance of any nature, please let the committee know as all assistance and input is much appreciated.

21.01.2022 The latest in the MRR flashback series penned and archived by past MRR President Steve Mentiplay. Our avid trail runners and particularly "The Lost Bunyips" will be licking their lips at this one!! 20.01.2022 Over twenty avid cross country trail runners revelled in the challenging 4km/8km loop style course set by Mackay Road Runners Club Captain, Jim Ford. The Lamberts Beach Reserve has an excellent array of sand, hills, timber steps, wildlife and brushy scrub where athletes can test their fitness and navigational skills via the trails and beach. The warm conditions proved to be tough as runners tracked their way through the open sand and shaded trails, however, the awesome sea...Continue reading

20.01.2022 Gday Runners, just a reminder to the change in start/finish area for this years Eungella Trail Run this Sunday. See the maps attached for the start/finish area location as well. Same distances as last year, the 20klm will be from Broken River to Eungella and return and we will have a shorter 6klm option, all via the fantastic rainforest trails. 20.01.2022 Gday Runners. Check this session out from our MRR member and sponsor Thomas Wendt.

19.01.2022 Gday Runners, Although the running season has been shortened and we havent been able to hold our usual season full of competitive handicapped and Club Championship runs due to the impacts of COVID 19, it has been great to get back together on the roads and trails for some social running before the weather heats up again. Despite the much shortened MRR running season, the MRR Committee decided that we will still hold our annual MRR Dinner, just without the trophy presentatio...n bit. Also as a thankyou to our fantastic MRR Members for their continued loyalty the club will subsidise the cost of the dinner at The Grove. For $30 this year, members will have a scrumptious three course meal and a welcome drink. As always, non-members are more than welcome as well. Saturday the 10th of October is the date, 6.30pm the start time. All the details are on the flyer. RSVPs need to be in by the 30th of September to Vicki Vickers. Get in before it sells out! See you there!

19.01.2022 Mackay Road Runners Shawn's Summer Social Series continued with a spectacular 5/10km run through the beautiful Cape Hillsborough National Park's undulating trails, beaches and unsealed roads. Club Captain, Jim Ford set a challenging loop course where runners of all ages and abilities could test their fitness levels throughout one of Mackay's most tourist visited regions and it's right here on our doorstep! The 4.30pm start was perfect for all athletes to do their desired cou...Continue reading

19.01.2022 Forty-four years ago to the day, Mackay Road Runners silently celebrates its birthday month with a few images from one of its favourite running destinations. The Cape Hillsborough National Park has been been an annual event locked into the Clubs calendar for basically the entirety of The Clubs existence. Trail running has always been a significant inclusion on the Clubs formal program. Runners love the challenging hills, varying terrains and expected wildlife as they tr...ack their way through the awesome rain forests, sandy beaches whilst enjoying the scenic vistas of the many lookouts. Congratulations must go to the founding members of the Club including Ian Phillips and Fred Saliba, who were a just two of not many more runners at the time, who sought rare but like minded individuals to be united in their love of running anywhere, any place and any time. Competition was fierce as runners pitted themselves against each other in distances and events from the track to Marathon and Ultra Marathons. Many members have come and gone but have never experienced a year like this one, in fact the often described lonely running of racing the marathon and its lead up training is mild in comparsion to the current isolation and social distancing rules athletes are experiencing to rid the World of COVID-19. The images and thoughts of one time World Marathon record holder, Australian, Commonwealth Games and World Champion Marathoner, Rob (Deek) DeCastella, sponging himself down via the communal water buckets that were for ALL runners to use and re-use, is astonishing and certainly unthinkable in the current environment! Mackay Road Runners will continue to post historical weekly editorials from past events that would normally have been on the upcoming week so that we can all remember and treasure what was and what will become hopefully very soon. The option of training outside in pairs is still considered feasible, however, keep in mind the very strict guidelines for the health of yourself and others and keep updated via relevant governing bodies. Use your imagination and mental strength to your advantage when solo training, ie take in the sights, smells and sounds you would otherwise not notice. Maybe leave your watch at home on your usual route, do loops with a friend ie meet up every kilometre or two for a few hundred metres, etc...... then re-join at another location, etc.... Its hard, but try leaving the watch at home, try varying sprints from post to post, corner to corner......take walking breaks....say hi and give a friendly wave to passersby....were all in this together doing our very best to keep active, safe and healthy!

19.01.2022 Morning Runners. Please see below our latest advice to members regarding the clubs approach to the current COVID-19 advisories. This notice has been emailed to members as well. As the situation changes we will continue to keep members updated via email and facebook notifications. Everyones continued understanding is appreciated. Thanks, MRR

19.01.2022 Mackay Road Runners enjoyed perfect running conditions for their annual Pre Fathers Day social 5/10km run from the beautiful Botanic Gardens precincts last Saturday morning. Club President, Tim Magoffin described the parkrun style course to runners who rejoiced in tackling their individual options in the early morning sunshine with their buddies. Female speedster, Alyce Garth sizzled over the two loop ten km course to be first in the girls and fifth overall behind junior cha...mpion, Alex Couldrey, Nick Rewald, Rodney Elworthy and Joe Grech. Alyce is a top level runner doing extremely well with a new little baby that she takes in the running pram or hiking backpack for regular outings. Runners were in excellent form including the usual Saturday morning running crew of Sandy Strong, Matt Stevens, Julie Whibley, Tim Magoffin, Joe Grech, Ross and Leanne Connor. David Isbister had a great morning running with his grandson Cooper Leeson as they easily completed the 5km. Scott McIntosh pushed his toddler, James in the running pram for a quick scoot around the Botanic Gardens trails, whilst his wife Dale and new six week old baby girl Lucy waited at the finish line. Runners and volunteers stayed for a post run coffee or two from the awesome, Cafe2U baristas Owen & Jeanine whilst they waited for the exciting post run Fathers Day themed random draw prizes. Runners were ecstatic with the Typo prizes especially Sandy Strong who won a reuseable Typo note book and calico bag with the meaning of life on the side. Vicki Vickers and Arthur Dick substituted their run for voluntary registrar and timekeeping duties. Runners are always so appreciative of the voluntary assistance the club gives to every weekly race including course set up in the early hours of the morning and then pack up after the last runner is through. Mackay Road Runners fearless leader, Tim Magoffin is an expert in setting up although missing his partner set up guy, Andrew Short who has been unable to attend due to work commitments. Stacey Tresise made a welcome return to the track alongside Peter Ellison, Carolyn Steginga, John Couldrey, Jose Short, Jo Hughes, Julie Whibley, Ricky Parker, Ross Vickers, Jo Skinner, Craig McGahey and Carmel Mahon. This Sundays social run commences 8am from the Broken River carpark which is 5km left past the Eungella Chalet. The course options include a social 6km and 20km, however, runners can opt to turn early so long as they make their decision known to the Race Directors. Social distancing is still the major rule of the day, therefore, runners will need to register with the organisers before and after the event so that all competitors have been accounted for. Check out the Mackay Road Runners website for any updates and new announcements.

18.01.2022 G'day Runners, a reminder of the Shawn's Summer Series social run this Sunday arve. Jim has the "Soft Sand and Prickles" run from the Seabreeze Tavern at Lamberts Beach. Start time is 5.30pm. A loop course with 3-4 Loops, 8klm in total. My guess is we'll get reaquainted with the Slade Point Reserve Trails. As always, everyone's welcome with a gold coin donation for fruit and refreshments afterwards. Children 12 years and under need an attending adult. Please bring a water bottle. All runs are social at your own pace.

15.01.2022 As all across the world today has been declared "Benita Willis Day" - HAPPY BIRTHDAY BENITA!!, we thought it was timely for the latest MRR flashback to include this latest group of photos and newspaper clippings courtesy of Steve Mentiplay, they are of the Mackay juniors from the 1988 to 1991 era. Benita Willis, the Roberts sisters - Charlotte, Saleena and April, Melanie Hedrick, Matt Shields and Daniel Battley are all in here. As Steve relates....."What a talented group of j...unior runners Mackay had 30 years ago. Benita Willis, the Roberts sisters - Charlotte, Saleena and April, Melanie Hedrick, Matt Shields and Daniel Battley to name just a few. Back then the juniors mainly focused on track, cross country and winning medals at state and national school championships but when they crossed over and contested organised Mackay Road Runner events they always made their presence felt by winning. I remember Saleena Roberts narrowly winning the 6.5km City to Harbour Fun Run in 1989, Melanie Hedrick winning the 5km 1990 North Queensland Games Fun Run in a time of 21mins 19secs and the three Roberts sisters finishing first, second and third in the 1991 5.7km Cyclone Joy Relief Fun Run. There was also the 1989 Prince Of Wales Golden Mile where one second separated 11 year old April Roberts from 10 year old Benita Willis and Alison Wilson. It was that close you could have covered all three runners with a blanket. Benita who was 10 years of age when our paths first crossed would eventually go on to win the 2004 World Cross Country Championships and represent Australia at the Olympics four times. She is the holder of 11 national records including one Oceania record (marathon) and all these records have stood for well over ten years which is an amazing. Im also in awe of her Australian Marathon record of 2hrs 22mins 36secs which she ran in Chicago. Add in the Australian Athletic Championship gold medals she accumulated over the years it would be only a matter of time before Benitas achievements would be recognised. It was in 2018 when she was inducted into the Athletics Australia Hall of Fame, an honour justly deserved. One other event that still stands out for me is the 800m as I use to run this distance in my junior years. In 1997 Saleena Roberts would win the 800m Australian Athletic Championship race in 1997. A major highlight in her career. I was so fortunate to be living in Mackay when these junior runners were beginning their athletic careers." More historic MRR gold, thanks Steve.

15.01.2022 Back by popular demand, the (now much longer) 1989, 1990 & 1991 versions of the Pioneer Valley Relay recollected by past President Steve Mentiplay. The relay added the hill climb, well known (and much loved!) by all past and current MRRs via the famous King and Queen of the Mountain! Thanks again Steve. 1989, 90 & 91 Pioneer Valley Relay Three decades ago the Pioneer Valley provided the perfect backdrop for the Pioneer Valley Relay Classic. First held in 1988 the running ev...ent was staged over 60kms from Mackay to Finch Hatton before the distance was extended to 78kms to include the Eungella range. Teams were made up of six runners with each runner required to complete 10kms (2 x 5kms) in 1988 and 13kms (2 x 5kms and 1 x 3kms) from 1989 onwards. To ensure an even competition all runners were seeded and allocated teams that were sponsored by local businesses. Tactics played an important part because race positions often see-sawed as team captains swapped a fast runner for a slower runner. In most instances final placings were decided on the range so having a good hill runner in your team was hugely beneficial. While there was always excellent comraderie and friendly heckling among the teams the racing was always serious. It generally took teams between 5hrs 20mins to 5hrs 40mins to complete the 78km distance. Team winners in the early years were the Pioneer News, Telecom, Westpac and the Daily Mercury. In 1991 Wayne Raines and Rob Saliba raced the event as individuals. It was a hot afternoon with Saliba opening up a two and a half kilometre lead midway during the race. The heat and a groin injury finally took its toll on Saliba with Raines passing him at the 58km mark. Shortly after Saliba pulled out leaving Raines to go on and finish in a time of 7 hours 24 minutes which was 26 minutes quicker than the time he recorded the year before. With the relay event held on a Saturday, the 5.6km Broken River to Eungella Fun Run was introduced for the Sunday morning. This enabled runners and families to make a weekend of it on top of the range. Winners of this event included Charlie Martel, Paul King, Erica Ross and Michelle McIntosh. With relay events one can always expect the unexpected and the Pioneer Valley Relay threw some curve balls in the early years with local celebrity Brumby Bob turning up unexpectedly one year with a camel, a runner having a close encounter with a taipan at a changeover point and overnight drama in the Eungella Chalet car park that required police intervention early one Sunday morning. This was always a fabulous weekend but unfortunately the event had to be abandoned in the late nineties due to a series of on course roadworks and safety concerns.

14.01.2022 More great news runners!! No doubt everyone has heard the news that from noon Friday July 3 the Roadmap to Recovery from COVID19 is being updated to significantly ease restrictions on Outdoor Sporting Activities such as ours and obviously many of our other daily pursuits. This relaxation is a just reward for the huge efforts and sacrifices that the Queensland public and businesses and club members such as ours have put in to get us to this great position. This is great ne...ws for our club. It will be fantastic to get out into our great outdoors again and relink with all our fellow club members who we have missed running with for these last four months. Before we can resume our Sunday club runs we will however need to update our Industry COVID Safe Plan and recheck in with our insurers to make sure we have all our ducks in a row. Hopefully this will all be able to be sorted quickly and we can get back to our weekly club runs asap. Well be back in touch with a start date as soon as we have it to hand. Cheers, MRR p.s a little reminder photo of times before "social distancing". Love this shot of the ladies. Also including another "Wheres Leon?" photo bomb.

13.01.2022 Mackay Road Runners Shawn's Summer Social Series continued with a challenging event commencing from the Hibiscus Shopping Centre carpark precincts, Bucasia. Over thirty runners enjoyed the very warm conditions as they bolted from the gun towards the Bucasia Beach esplanade and beyond towards the Shoal Point rocks. The well designed course by Club Captain, Jim Ford, catered as usual, for various options so all competitors could complete their preferred distances. Jim was once... again on point with the course description, ensuring participants were aware of the turnaround markers set up by Andrew Short. Simon Henderson was ecstatic with his efforts as was Andrew Short, Derek Woods, Heli Talinurn, Ashley Davies, Alan Zamparutti, Carmel Mahon, John Couldrey, Jeanette Farrugia, Robin Stinson, Darrin Pullen, Tim Caddy, Peter Ellison and Brenda Windsor. Runners could mix up their options via the course distances from 5km to 11km so that they could adjust their kilometre increment to suit their current stage of fitness ability. A welcome return to Shawn's Summer Series was oldie but a goldie, Noel Barnett, who as usual hasn't changed bit and still in peak fitness! Look forward to seeing him same time next year :) There was a very special Christmas visit from the Summer Series namesake's family, Bonny and John Claydon, Sharon and Jeff Stewart-Harris. Shawn Claydon's family and friends are super grateful to the Mackay Road Runners for the very special events held in Shawn's honour ie the annual Shawn's Summer Social Series which runs through from October to February and the annual Forsyth Accounting Shawn Claydon Memorial 10km Shield, which is a formal Club Championship event. Shawn, who was the Club's Treasurer for several years and champion local and national runner, passed away just over two years ago from Pancreatic Cancer, still remains in the forefront of runners' memories. This Sunday's Shawn's Summer Series commences 5.30pm from North Mackay High School's street frontage. Runners can look forward to seriously challenging lap sets through several well known ascents/descents in North Mackay and Mt Pleasant. Many thanks to Jim once again for organising a variety of training techniques each week throughout Shawn's Series. Mackay Road Runners and Club Captain, Jim also encourage all athletes, whether a Mackay Road Runners Member or not to come to these events as well as the social track training sessions at the Aquatic and Recreational Centre (ARC) at Ooralea each Wednesday at 5.30pm. The training sessions for both events are free however, the ARC require a $3 entry fee to be paid to the pool reception prior to entering the track and a $2 gold coin donation is only required for post run refreshments on the Sunday Shawn's Summer Series of events.

13.01.2022 As we all know, the Mackay Road Runners suspension of our 2020 program continues until further notice. As a means of keeping in touch with members well continue Janelles regular articles which are now focused on the fun weve had at our club runs in the past. This will also remind us of the fun to be had when the current restrictions are lifted. Its been good to see any runners out on the streets in their socially distant 2s complying with the current requirements. Heres... Janelles latest, thanks Janelle!! With this weekends Easter Sunday Zambreros Burrito Bolt 5km & 10km very social event cancelled. We look back at the Zambrero Borrito Bolt. The inaugural 2016 event proved very popular with the locals as they could run their optional distance and then enjoy the hospitality of Zambreros Management and Staff. Mackay Road Runners and Zambreros continue to be very mindful of the current guidelines in maintaining excellent hygiene and social distancing in a bid to support the extinction of the worldwide COVID-19 health crisis. Both organisations mindfully support local and international bodies, therefore, please support them if you can. In the meantime, check out the latest updates and options in your Community/Government sites/calendars to stay fit and healthy...remember to keep calm, stay vigilant, be kind and understanding of everyone.

12.01.2022 Nearly twenty dedicated and hardy runners participated in the Mackay Road Runners Shawn's Summer Social Series from the Mackay North High School gate. The late Sunday afternoon run was a very testing affair with scorching sunshine and high humidity facing runners as they tackled the well known Mt Pleasant High & Pollock Streets Rotary lookout and beyond. The seriously challenging 4.5km loop course gave runners the opportunity and satisfaction of conquering the seemingly nev...er ending ascents as well as the relief of speeding the descents. The physical and mental aspects of running hills was a huge workout for 4.5km/9km runners who were thankful when the sun finally dipped so they could enjoy the early evening cooling breezes. An excellent effort once again to junior runner, Alex Couldrey who found the tough course enjoyable as did Robin Stinson, Rodney Elworthy, Stephen Oberg, Simon Henderson, Derek Woods, John Couldrey, Carolyn Steginga, Carmel Mahon, Jeanetta Farrugia, Andrew Short and Jim Ford. Many thanks to Mackay Road Runners Club Captain, Jim Ford for his excellent course location which runners really appreciated, especially once they had finished! Jim was also the most popular guy on the block with the usual post race zooper doopers which apparently were sugar free and nothing artificial....nothing but the best for these highly tuned athletes. This Sunday's Shawn's Summer Social Series continues 5.30pm from the Memorial Pool carpark opposite Canelands Shopping Centre, Victoria Street (opp Red Rooster). Jim will once again offer a variable course for runners of all abilities and levels of fitness. The options as usual will be for runners to only do what they feel capable of, therefore no pressure to compete with anyone but yourself. Injury is often caused by running too much too soon after injury or increasing mileage percentages, therefore, runners must be very aware of their own limitations including hydration requirements, etc... Casual runners and members looking forward to join Mackay Road Runners social off season runs are most welcome to be involved with a minimal costs of $2 gold coin donation to go to post race refreshments. Jim's very experienced and professional advice is free! Jim also hosts free social track training sessions each Wednesday at 5.30pm from the Aquatic and Recreational Centre, Ooralea, however, there is a $3 fee charged by the Centre for the use of the internationally accredited artificial surface athletic track. Participants will need to pay at the Pool reception desk before entering the track precincts.

12.01.2022 While youre in COVID lock down check out our good friend, fellow MRR and Marina Run sponsor Thomas from Construct Health Physiotherapy and his handy home workout demos. Now theres a good use for a Woolies shopping bag!

11.01.2022 Mackay Road Runners Club President Tim Magoffin welcomed approximately thirty runners for the annual Bonsons Scrub Road social 6km and 12km. The challenging event commenced 7am amid cool and breezy but sunny conditions just off the Bruce Highway, Coningsby. 11.01.2022 What a fantastic morning for our annual trail run through the beautiful Eungella National Park. It stayed breezy and cool throughout the morning while 30 runners traversed the 6 km or 20 km courses. The trail was marked out by the very experienced Matt Stevens who also guided runners during the run. As always we are very grateful Matt. Thank you also to Tim for his signage and set up of the start area. The looping 6 km course was enjoyed by a speedy Lynn Treis, followed by Ro...ss and Leanne Connor and Jacqui Wonnocott. Leon Ryan, trail running guru, was ecstatic with his time in covering the more challenging 20 km course making this a PB by 4 minutes. Mick Scholer and Paul Butler were only a few minutes behind followed by Tim Caddy. First women to finish were Ainslie Heinke and Jaylene Harrison crossing together with huge winning smiles followed by Jose Short. It was great to see so many experienced trail runners make the most of the morning as well as those who came along to give it a go. Theres nothing like a sweaty trail run and a few stories of trips, scrapes and prickly vines to bring us together. Next Sunday our run is Whibleys Wander from 25 Duncan Street with 5 km and 12 km options hosted by Julie Whibley. Reminder; Wednesday track sessions continue under the guidance of Jim Ford at 5:30pm at the Mackay ARC each week for $3 to cover the lights. Saturday social long runs also leave from the Wood St cinema carpark at 5:00am every week.

08.01.2022 Great news runners. Our MRR Wednesday evening social track sessions with Jim are back. We can have 20 for these outdoor sessions at the Mackay ARC out at Ooralea. First one back is tomorrow Wed the 10th. New start time of 5.30pm. Bring $ for the lights. Hopefully we will also have more good news soon on a return to Sunday club runs when the next lot of restriction easing comes around in July. See you on the streets (and the track)

07.01.2022 Approximately forty runners enjoyed perfect trail running conditions from 6.30am at the Seabreeze Tavern end of Lamberts Beach through the Slade Point Nature Reserve. The 5km & 10km options were thoroughly enjoyed by attendees as they meandered through the challenging undulating hills and soft sands of the Reserve. The Mackay Road Runners President Tim Magoffin thanked the leadership and course direction of Leon Ryan and Martin Lambert as cool morning breezes were welcomed i...n lieu of the usual humid conditions. Although the temperature rose as runners entered the final stages of the race, they were rewarded with a tempting option of a dip in the ocean. The tough, very social course lead runners through the Slade Point Reserve along the beach and up onto the lookout track for a series of great visual and unique vistas. Runners enjoyed the variety of what trail running offers ie testing inclines, soft sands, compacted forest trails and technical navigational skills. Runners commented on the awesome sunrise and how enjoyable it was running in nature in lieu of the usual streets and highways of the region. Leon and Martin were on hand to offer experienced trail running tips and assistance to the eager crowd of participants including Vicki Vickers, Nick Rewald, Thomas Wendt, Greame Harris, Carolyn Steginga, Carmel Mahon, Karla Hook, Bernadine McKinnon, Andrew Short, Terese Hackney, Shane Donnollan, Kristian Safe, Emma Johnson, Shane Barben, Tim Caddy, Shane Dodds, Arthur Dick, Ross Vickers, Tim Magoffin and Michael Feenaghty. This Sunday, Mackay Road Runners have their second Club Championship on the 2020 program from the Presidents residence on Ocean Avenue, Slade Point. The 5km and 16km Junior and Open Club Championship will commence from a 6.30 am sharp scratch start. The 5klm course will give provide runners with scenic views of Slade Point and Lamberts Beach. The longer course runners will head from Ocean Avenue to the surprisingly undulating Slade Point Road, Keeleys Road and on towards Andergrove Road where the course set up guru, Andrew Short will have a turning point for runners to trace their way back along the same course, past the start and out to do a Loop of Lamberts Beach Esplanade before the final three kilometres back to the finish line at 16 Ocean Avenue. Runners are reminded to wear their member number and chip on the front of themselves and be registered in with the timekeeper at least fifteen minutes before start time. Runners and supporters are welcome to stay post race for yummy breakfast of the infamous Bacon and Egg Magoffins, tee/coffee, etc.... for a $5 donation towards the Leukaemia Foundation. Many thanks to Tim and his family for providing the breakfast and hosting the event along with the Leukaemia Foundations Barry & Chris Comben.

07.01.2022 The latest MRR flashback starts a couple of reports and photos from the Pioneer Valley Relay the club used to organise. Thanks again to Steve Mentiplay for the photos and recollections. Lets see who you can spot, firstly from the bi-centenary year, 1988!! The 1988 Pioneer Valley Relay It is now 32 years since the Pioneer Valley Relay was first held. The inaugural race in 1988 was held over 60kms from the Junk tourist information centre to Finch Hatton. Following the events ...success it was decided the relay would be extended to 78kms and include the challenging Eungella Range. Teams were made up of six runners with each runner required to complete 10kms (2 x 5kms) in 1988 and 13kms (2 x 5kms and 1 x 3kms) from 1989. To ensure an even competition runners were seeded and allocated teams. Ironically the inaugural winner of the Pioneer Valley Relay was the Pioneer News whose team consisted of Rob Saliba, Lew Cameron, Dawn Gennochio, Ray Leak, Shane Leary and Frank Ross. Results from the 1988 event - Pioneer News 3.53.16 1; McGuires Hotel 4.01.19 2; Kohuna Resort 4.04.07 3; City Gym 4.06.27 4; Video Ezy 4.06.49 5; Telecom 4.07.05 6; Roylen Cruises 4.08.59 7; Vietnam Veterans 4.11.59 Mackay Sportscene 4.20.40. Two other teams - Ben Cassar Memorial Swim team and Australian Hotel also contested the race in a separate division with these runners opting to run with their friends. The Ben Cassar Swim team were right up there recording a time of 4.08.23.

07.01.2022 Mackay Road Runners Shawn's Summer Social Series attracted more than 30 very keen runners who assembled at the Memorial Pool carpark on Sunday to test their speed and heat endurance in distances from 5 to 11 km. In the absence of Club Captain, Jim Ford, Andy Short stepped up to explain the simplicity of the afternoon run. Thanks Andy. After a mad dash, vying for the best path through the undercover carpark at Canelands, runners made their way along the beautiful Blue Water Tr...ail through Sandfly Creek, towards Town Beach, and for those wanting the extra distance, along Binnington Esplanade. For the locals, who else felt a short lived wave of nostalgia as we sped past the demolition site of the Sea Fresh Sheds before thoughts gave way to the excitement of more scenic running paths. Sunday’s run saw fantastic efforts from all involved including but not limited to Carolyn Steginga, Anna Lindqvist, Jo Hughes, Glynis Forse, Beck Scholar. ,Joe Grech, Rodney Elworthy, Mick Scholar, Carmel Mahon, Stephen Oberg and Simon Henderson. (Too many names to mention) Runners who take part in Shawn’s Summer Social Series have become accustomed to the post run tradition of a frozen Super Dooper. A slight communication issue in the Short household left little time to get the treats fully frozen so runners had to drink rather than suck their notsosuper Doopers. Next Sunday's last run before Christmas will be a festive affair, commencing 5.30pm from the Harrup Park carpark. Runners are invited to stay post run for pre Christmas drinks on the deck at the Harrup Park Club...please bring a change of clothes/towel and coin to purchase refreshments. Casual runners and members looking forward to joining Mackay Road Runners social off season runs are most welcome to be involved with a minimal costs of $2 gold coin donation to go to post race refreshments.

Hang around for the famous MRR random draws!

Mackay Road Runners Club Captain, Jim Ford offered course directions to the small avid band of approximately fifteen runners who were keen to run after a few days of very welcomed seasonal rain. However, the humidity was still very evident as runners left the ARC precincts carpark towards th...e Botanic Gardens pathways and beyond. Jim welcomed Gold Coast Visitors, Erin and Tim and first time runner at Shawn's Summer Series, ex Gold Coast compatriot, Beau who is now a resident of the beautiful Mackay region. Many thanks to Jim and Andrew Short for organising the Sunday weekly Shawn's Summer Social Series in honour of former Mackay champion runner, Shawn Claydon who passed away in 2018 from Pancreatic Cancer. 2020 will be the third annual off season social training program in remembrance of Shawn and his amazing support of the Mackay Road Runners Club as a Treasurer and successful athlete. 05.01.2022 Thomas has been to Woolies again....this time he also picked up a chair!! Enjoy...or maybe not if you do them properly!

04.01.2022 What a treat this Sunday morning runners! Thanks to MRRs "Lost Bunyip" himself, Leon Ryan we have a feast of local trails for 5 and 10k options. A social, non-timed trail run this week to get everyone into a new course in our trail series. Run maps are here for both options. We will be starting near the lifesavers station and toilet block at Ram Chandra Park, Lamberts Beach (well change the location on the web site calendar which currently lists us starting just down the ro...ad at the Seabreeze Tavern). The 5klm course will quickly get into the fantastic trails of the Slade Point Nature Reserve looping around to return to the start line. For the 10k runners, as well as the same loop through the Slade Point Reserve, we are in for a scenic treat of Lamberts Beach and the magic coastline cliffs trail including the newly painted mural on the Slade Point water tower. Thanks for the recon running Leon, youre a legend!!

04.01.2022 And another handy tool from MRR Runners Nick and Thomas from Construct Health Physio. Check out the video series for runners. As they say...:theres two types of runners, those who are injured and those that are about to be injured"...or is this what Thomas and Nick are trying to get us to avoid...we think so!

04.01.2022 Road Runners Flashback time!! And thanks to Steve Mentiplay (past President of MRR late 80s to early 90s) we have a whole sequence of them. Steves memory was jogged when he realised that April 16, 2020 was the 30th anniversary of the NQ Games Half Marathon in Mackay. So thats todays story from Steve and some classic archive photos. Theres some current local MRR legends in there, see if you can spot anyone else and let us know who? Seems like "speed shorts" and bare ches...ts were the go with the lads. Thanks and over to Steve..... In 1988 Charlie Martel finished second to Townsvilles Richard Barrett in the NQ Games Half Marathon in Cairns. Two years later he would go one better in front of a vocal Mackay crowd and win in a time of 1hr 11mins 46secs. Charlie didnt have it all his own way with NSW runner Paul Woodhouse and Townsville triathlete Chris Bateley keeping the pressure on for much of the one lap course around the northern parts of Mackay. After a series of surges Bateley finally ran out of steam with 3kms to go and left it to Martel and Woodhouse to battle it out. Both runners were still together on the Forgan Bridge but once they crossed the bridge and turned right for the finish line at Canelands Park Martel gained the upper hand to win by 12 seconds. Carol Porter made it a Mackay double when she won the womens race by 1min 51secs from Rockhamptons Bev Laundry and Mareebas Kelly Young who was a minute further back. Porters winning time was 1hr 33mins 40secs. The wheelchair race provided a sensational finish with Brisbanes Mike Nugent winning by under one second from Cairns Ron Lawrence. Both recorded the quick time of 58mins 13secs. There were six wheelchair competitors in the race. Race conditions were far from ideal for the 98 competitors with the heat and high humidity taking a toll on several runners. The heat was so oppressive several runners opted to discard their race singlets prior to the race start. In the 5km fun run Townsvilles Colin Johnston won the male race in a time of 17mins 24secs with Rob Saliba finishing second and Brian Fanning third. Eleven year old Mackay junior Melanie Hedrick proved to good in the female event winning in a time of 21mins 19secs from Charlotte Roberts and Michelle McIntosh. Olympic gold medallist Debbie Flintoff King who was a special guest for the games competed in the fun run and ran 23mins 40secs. She stayed on to present the half marathon and fun run medals.

04.01.2022 Kim and Jo have heard the news....were back!! Our MRR Committee met last night and confirmed we are starting back on our Sunday Club runs from this Sunday morning the 19th of July. We have our Industry COVID Safe Plan in place so well need everyone to abide by the requirements of the plan. More on that over the next couple of days but were sure we can safely manage our club runs now under Stage 3 restrictions. The Committee also decided that given that we have lost so much... time out of our season, that the rest of the season wont be for club points. Our usual goals of fun, fitness and friendship will still be as strong as ever however. Another highlight...the new shared pathway from the Marina Precinct along Harbour Rd is open, what better way to celebrate MRCs great work than to have our return run along the new pathway! 5klm and 12klm options will be the go. We will revise the rest of the 2020 calendar in the next few weeks but for now the details of Sundays run are: Start Date / Time: Sunday 19th July, 7am Sharp Start / Finish Location: New Mulherin Park, (Ocean side pathway at the end of East Point) Check out the attached map for the location Were going to need everyone (current members, new members, day runners, volunteers, spectators) to sign in along with their contact details so please give yourself plenty of time. Also, as we are all used to now, if you do have flu like symptoms, please stay away and well see you when you get better. As always, all are welcome to share our clubs famous hospitality...again! See you there. Cheers....MRR

03.01.2022 Just a reminder Runners. Shawn's Summer Series this afternoon is from Centenary Place (near North Mackay Primary School). It's a 1 hr run to the Harbour with 5 and10k options.

03.01.2022 A great effort by over twenty Mackay Road Runners who tackled the high humidity and strong headwinds from Magpies Sporting Complex towards the Bruce Highway via the meandering pathways of North Mackay. Versatile Club Captain Jim Ford adapted the usual race course to work around the Bruce Highway roadworks. Jim's 'catch the field' concept worked well with the back markers's main challenge to chase down the leaders across both events. Rod Elworthy was a standout competitor, as... was Robin Stinson, Michael Schoer, Tim Caddy, Derek Woods and Joe Grech. Joe performed extremely well despite having completed a marathon the previous day, congratulations Joe, awesome effort! Birthday girls, Jo Skinner and Jo Hughes found time in their very social Sunday schedule to slot in a quick 6km run before heading home for an evening of light festivities. Andrew Short easily completed the 6km event alongside the Jo's, hundreds of ducks, geese and varying wildlife whilst engaging in scenic vistas of the beautiful Gooseponds. Excellent performances also came from Simon Henderson, Teresa Hackney, Glynis Forse, Emma Johnson, Jeanette Farrugia, Alan Zamparutti, David Isbister, Peter Ellison, Stephen Oberg and Heli Talinurn. This Sunday's event will include testing undulations amongst the sandy trails of the Lamberts Beach Park Reserve. The course commencing 5.30pm from the Seabreeze Tavern end of the Lamberts Beach Esplanade will consist of four loops totalling 8km, however, shorter course options are always offered. Jim Ford would appreciate all attendees to be signed in for race start 5.30pm sharp due to fast fading light towards the end of the course. Many thanks to Jim for providing post run refreshments thanks to the $2 gold coin donations from participants. Runners are reminded of the Wednesday weekly social track training sessions held 5.30pm at the Aquatic and Recreation Centre (ARC) at Ooralea. The training sessions are free with only a $3 entry fee to the track facility payable at the pool reception. Many thanks to Jim for organising the well planned track sessions which are very beneficial for long distance endurance athletes as well as middle distance and sprinters. Mackay Road Runners will be holding it's Annual General Meeting in the coming months, therefore, those interested in becoming a member are most welcome to attend. All ideas are up for discussion and majority voting by members will ensure a mixed and enjoyable season. All committee positions will be up for re-election, therefore, please consider what you can do for the Mackay Road Runners in it's 45th year.

02.01.2022 What cracking weather we had for the annual Eimeo Pacific Hotel Run. And no one got lost.........thats a first! Enjoy the photos.

01.01.2022 Over fifty Mackay Road Runners, walkers, spectators and volunteers attended the first run back since March 2020 due to the opening of Stage Three of the COVID-19 Roadmap. Club President, Tim Magoffin proudly announced the re-opening of the 2020 season with a strong message to continue being mindful of the strict safety and medical guidelines as administered by the Sports Governing bodies. The Mackay Road Runners Committee have decided to review the start points of the remai...ning formal 2020 calendar. The Clubs original race date this weekend would have been Eungella King of the Mountain, however, in lieu, it was agreed to utilise the excellent new walking/running/bike track from the New Mulherin Park towards Harbour Road for a very social 5km - 12km out and back event. Runners and volunteers who enjoyed the early morning crisp temperatures were race set up guys, Andrew Short and Tim Magoffin, Registrar, Paul Tilse, registration attendants, Vicki Vickers and Julie Whibley. Runners had the very flexible option of running to the 2.5km and return for a 5km run or at any point along the course with the final turnaround marker at the Bluewater Quay. This enabled runners who are all at varying stages of their training to complete distances ranging from 5km through to 12km, depending on their fitness. It was great to see quite a number of runners stepping up to the longer distances, including Sandra Henderson, Arthur Dick and Ross Connor. It was a highlight of the day to see that so many runners still managed to train throughout the five month COVID-19 restrictions and return to support the revival of the clubs running roster. Spectacular running conditions were on offer as competitors left the starting gate at the southern end of New Mulherin Park following the path towards Breakwater Road before taking a left onto the path to Harbour Road. The comraderie and light hearted heckling was enjoyed be all attendees including Simon Henderson, Bernadine McKinnon, Jose short, Tracey Dean, Anthony Blines, Carolyn Steginga, Merv Shields, Arthur Dick, Jan Smith, Maddy Price, Jo Hughes, Derek Woods, Paul Butler, Rebecca Scholer, Julian Picot, Nick Rewald, Stephen Oberg, Jo Skinner, Scott McIntosh, Carmel Mahon, Damian Rutland, Troy Allardyce, Tahnee Malagueno, Michael Feenaghty and Jim Ford. An amazing return to the track were the incredible duo of Mackay Road Runners legandary masters runners, seventy-six year old Stuart Sprott and seventy-four year old David Isbister. A very happy birthday to Mackay Road Runners Life Member and Marathon champion of the eighties and nineties, Merv Shields who turned seventy, six days ago. Merv had a very successful running career, clocking up several spectacular marathon times of sub two hours twenty minutes....an exceptional feat to still to be running today. Check the Mackay Road Runners website/facebook for any updates as the 2020 running calendar will be amended for the rest of the formal program.
