25.01.2022 Foot care is important from the time they are a couple of weeks old. I offer free foal trimming when visiting the mare & ideas on how to handle and train the youngster to encourage him to be a kind and easy horse for the farrier when older.

24.01.2022 Interested in Talk Back Tuesday? This is where you get to ask the questions on trimming or shoeing, hoof care, legs, diet, housing, environment etc.

23.01.2022 Perfect. Its also not the farriers job to "cure" seedy toe or thrush... the owner needs to take ownership of that one.

23.01.2022 Talk Back Tuesday.... Today !

23.01.2022 Another share. Please think about your horses ability or inability to adequately metabolise the sugars in our summer grasses. Once your horse founders, its a long road back to soundness.

22.01.2022 Check out this foot. This is a hard working, well functioning foot in its untrimmed state. Note the walls of the feet have beveled and carved on their own accord, short toe and slightly elevated heel.

21.01.2022 I laughed way too hard at this... lmfaooo

19.01.2022 10 weeks ago we took this fellows shoes off. Not dramatic changes to the cursory glance, but look closely & you can see how happy the feet (foot) really are now. Thank you to Evelyn for allowing me to share the photos.

19.01.2022 On the money here

18.01.2022 Hi Everyone, currently I am still able work and will try to (not) see everyone that I can in the safest manner in the next couple of days / week. To keep us all safe, I request that if I can visit & safely work with your horses either without you present, or, with you at a distance from me, then that is my preference going forward. That's really hard for me to say. :( but if that's what it takes then we can make it work.... If you have a booking past next week, or really need an urgent visit please contact me asap and I will try fit you in. Cheers Melissa

18.01.2022 #holisticfarrier We support the whole horse and all equine professionals regardless of age, race, religion, ... gender, sexual orientation, dietary preference, type of training, and choice of tools. Thanks Daisy Alexis Bicking for the post. #holisticfarrier

17.01.2022 *copied* written by Vanessa Schultz. The Farrier. Wake up, alarm clock blaring. Push a tired body out of bed, driven by determination, discipline and being of their word.... Coffee in a cup held by a tangling of aching joints and scars. The few moments of peace before heading off to meet an owner, to spend a day of ringing in the ears, aching feet, back screaming. Stand mare you beg as the memory of a close call burns into your brainSharp nails, sharp tools, 1,200lb unsettled flight animals with the strength and precision to change your life with one quick blow. Juggling appointments. Last minute cancelations. Last minute, emergency stops. Ungrateful clients, Gracious clients. Cold hands burn and stick to even colder metal tools, shoes. Heart warmed by young children with questions and a roaring forge. CleanClean. Balance. Shapeshape. Check your workcheck your work. Line it upcheck your workBegin to drive a nailhate the way it’s lined upremove it. Do it againPerfection. Feel a hot breath on your neck. Body tenses, shrug off a bite. He won’t bite you. The owner suggests. Eye roll, know you’d rather not risk it but hide behind a polite face. Deep breath, patience. New client? Scoffs at prices. Demands, demands. You? Meet the demands, to meet the demands again. Take the blame. Differing opinions. Veterinarians, trainers, other farriers... I read online. Striving to do your best. Nobetter than your best. You? Your biggest critic. Watch lives change. Grow with clients, grow with horses. Days of unsettled horses. Angry horses, spoiled horses, jerk-you-around horses, hang-on-your-back horses. Last stop of the day. Few backyard trims. Breath of fresh air. Old horse, 33. No teeth. Arthritic joints from years of tough work, tough demands. He met the demands. He’s tender in his movementsquietly crippled by dull aches. Stands patiently for you, you wait patiently for him. Each joint, slow moving. Slow to give the leg, slow to bend, hard to holdhe tries. A mutual understanding of aching bodies. Quietness. Docile. Peace. A soft voicehe will be euthanized soon. You hold back emotion, swallow a tear. Make a polite comment. Back to work, hide your face. Finish your job. Run your hand down the back, feel a deteriorated body. Say goodbye. Go home. Wake up, alarm clock blaring...

15.01.2022 American Farriers Journal surveyed a bunch or horse people about when the horse should be trained to stand for the farrier. Surprisingly 86% said when the farrier came... so no prior preparation. Do you take your horse to a jump comp or a dressage comp with no prior training? No.... Please put some thought to your horses distal limb training and keep your hoof care professional safe. There is a lot of horse over the top of them. Images: American Farriers Journal and Zazzle

15.01.2022 Geat fun way to start our week. If you were a horse and going through a pre-purchase exam....what would the attending Veterinarian find? Talking the whole horse!

14.01.2022 Pay on time And have a horse that will stand to be trimmed.

12.01.2022 Pleasure boots.

12.01.2022 The Horse is a good free publication and worthwhile subscribing.

09.01.2022 A good read, in respect to all the good & humble farriers everywhere.

09.01.2022 Abscess release today. This lovely gelding was just about non weight bearing on the Hoof, with heat and swelling on the medial quarter (meaning: to the inside of the foot). Ive flicked a portion of sole and wall and got an instant release, video just does not show the initial spurt of 'gunk' that came out. Post video the area was opened up some more to allow for drainage, cleaned, and a draining poultice was applied for comfort ans to encourage more if the infection to drain. Will return in a week to check and trim.

08.01.2022 Think you know your feet?

08.01.2022 Talk Back Tuesday is now! foot/feet / movement or nutrition.

05.01.2022 Another lady rockin it

04.01.2022 Only once or twice....

04.01.2022 So i found this infographic on my PC when I was cleaning up, and unfortunately I've no idea where its come from so I cannot offer the original author a credit. How do your feet stack up? I really want my feed to look like the example on the left and this is what I have in my mind when Im working on feet - however there are so many influencing factors at play. Have a look at the pictures and lets chat about comparisons next time I see you and your horses feet.... ~cheers Melissa

03.01.2022 Its today! Talk back Tuesday .... lets hear those questions today.

02.01.2022 Morning, as the cooler weather approaches & with the prediction of a nice wet winter, I'd like to share some preferred house keeping ideals for the cooler months. Before I arrive for our appointments could you please - Have your horses tied up in a dry flat area, if possible with shade.... Hooves all cleaned out from mud etc. There is no need to hose your horses legs to clean them for me as this means I get wet, simply towel them down, or hose and towel dry please. Wet rugs OFF. I get saturated working under wet rugs... please remove them for me. Please dont feed your horse/s while I am trimming or start making feeds up where horses can see this. I know sometimes your time is short but what feeding/preparing feeds does is create a horse who is distracted and doesn’t focus on being a good participant while I am trimming. This can be dangerous for me and jeopardize my safety. Payments- Cash is King! Please have cash ready or if you prefer to use bank transfer I would like a receipt sent to me. Invoices are dispatched electronically. There is a service charge after 7 days if payment isn’t made - this is because I have to pay the Book Keeper to follow up on late payments. Thanks, and see you are your next appointment. Cheers Melissa

02.01.2022 I really loathe working on and with assholes that want to kick for whatever reason. I have the need to shorten my trim client list for 2021 and these types of horses will be the first to need to find another monkey.

02.01.2022 This is not fake news Dry horses are very much appreciated! And take those wet dripping rugs off before the farrier/trimmer has to get underneath to work on them. Please.

01.01.2022 Interested in Talk Back Tuesday? This is where you get to ask the questions on hoof care, legs, diet, housing, environment etc.

01.01.2022 Meet Ronnie Ronnie is 30 and still being cared for in his senior citizen years by the same young lady who bought him as a 5yo Anyway, check out his hind foot. Not bad? Actually very good.. lovely big frog and shot toes and wall. Whats the big deal? Well anyone who has the pleasure of having an older horse would know that they dont move around as much as younger horses, and often will "park up" for longer periods than normal, all to the detriment of their feet and j...oints. So to see feet such as these on a 30 yo is quite unusual - perhaps a testament to the care his owner gives him, he also has a good paddock of variant terrain to traverse and has minimal body restrictions such as arthritis. Happy dayz for Ronnie.

01.01.2022 Busy couple of weeks, my next available appointment is Tuesday 25th, happy to take forward bookings. Happy Riding. cheers Melissa

01.01.2022 I like this from well known US based farrier Simon J Curtis. Worth reading and considering, how does your hoof care stack up? What are your negative and positive influences? As a hoof care provider, the biggest thing for our region currently in Central Qld would be the dry environment.
