17.01.2022 Friendly reminder to everyone as this topic was discussed at the September club meeting, We do live in croc country just give them respect, don't be complacent and watch out for your mates. I received a call from an operator this afternoon returning to the inlet, he sighted the animal with others at the sarina inlet ramp (protected ramp), the animal was estimated to be close to 4m.... These animals are common in this area, with regular sightings of 2 animals at the freshwater point ramp just around the headland, thankfully no human interaction has occurred thanks to reporting and vigilance. P.s never smile at a crocodile

15.01.2022 So what happened ! Several people and clubs are asking me for the water story of what happened on the 25th of Oct. Everything about the attack was opposite o...f what one would think diving around these sharks. The day itself was clear blue sky and the attack was mid day, the water was cool and the water was crystal clear. Normally here in FNQ (Far North Queensland) these sharks are very docile this time of year, sure we see them but normally they are moving slow and don't hang around to pick a fight. The warmer dirty water associated with summer seems to make them more aggressive at least that is what I thought. It was the last dive of the day, just :15 before a massive Whale Shark swam up to me. I had to extend my arm as if to say stop and the large girl just turned slowly and swam away. I have never seen a whale shark in the the past 10 years of diving here so it was either spectacular or a warning! We anchored above a flat top boomie in the middle of a white sandy paddock, the shape of the boomie resembled a coffee can with high sides and a flat top. The sandy bottom was 22-24 meters but the top of the boomie only 10-12 meters deep. I guess both Pete my partner and I dove at the same time but he returned to the surface sooner. The moment Pete heard my gun go off he saw the 3.5 meter bull accelerating across the sandy bottom. The fish I shot was dead so I swam over to grab the shaft and at that moment the shark came up and over the top of the boomie moving so fast it was only 2 meters away! At this point it was obvious that it was going to hit me, I smashed it in the face as hard as I could rolled to my right and felt it sink its jaws into my left thigh not once but twice. At first it was just disbelief "that thing just bit me" then it became surreal "that fucker just bit me:" It retreated as fast as it came. Then 30 years of military training kicked in and I knew to get out of the water quickly but remain calm . I kicked as hard as I could to the surface my left leg shreaded and bleeding profusely I could not even see my fins and I was worried the shark would return. Half way up my friend Pete grabbed me and together we kicked as hard as we could. He put himself in great peril helping me that day, the amount of blood in the water was staggering and the shark could have returned. Once in the boat Pete put a tourniquet made from a weight belt around my upper thigh and wiithout that I would have never survived. Lesson learned, after 50 years of spearfishing the only thing I can come up with are the sharks (bull sharks) are learning behavior like the click of a speargun, struggling of a fish on a fishermen's line, the noise of a boat or even jumping in whilst at anchorage. At the moment the best anyone can do here in Australia is to: never dive alone, all divers to be first aid and CPR qualified and anyone engaging in water sports on or near our coastline to carry a tourniquet in the boat.
