23.01.2022 Interventional Radiology (IR) is an exciting area of modern medicine that delivers precise, targeted treatment for complex diseases and conditions. IR is performed under image guidance (CT, fluoroscopy, mammography, MRI or ultrasound) to ensure the area of concern is targeted accurately. IR is used to diagnose or treat many conditions that once required surgery. IR is minimally invasive, anaesthesia is generally not required, pain and recovery time are significantly reduced, and procedure cost is much less compared with surgery. Some IR procedures include: Steroid injection, PRP and nerve block. For more information on IR at Mackay Radiology, please visit: https://www.scr.com.au/services/interventional-radiology/

14.01.2022 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses an exceptionally strong magnet to generate detailed high quality images about the structures within the body, specifically your brain, muscles, soft tissues (tendons, ligaments, nerves) and internal organs. FAQ: What about hip and knee replacements? Orthopaedic and dental implants are not magnetic (non ferrous), and while some surgical metal can slightly distort the MRI image, the majority are safe.... Due to the magnetic nature of an MRI, patients with certain ferromagnetic or electronic implanted devices may not be suitable, in which case alternative diagnostic imaging can be recommended. Devices include; pacemakers, metal heart valves, some ear implants and various other clips. A detailed patient safety form is completed by each patient prior to their appointment. MRI is considered very safe, and does not use ionising radiation (X-ray). 02.01.2022 15-21 November is National Skin Cancer Action Week. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, including melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. Every year in Australia skin cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers. During National Skin Cancer Action Week and throughout summer, use the five forms of sun protection and #OwnYourTone: - slip on sun-protective clothing - slop on SPF30 (or higher) - slap on a broad-brimmed hat... - seek shade - slide on sunglasses. A combination of these measures, along with getting to know your skin and regularly checking for any changes, are the keys to reducing your skin cancer risk. #OwnYourTone See more
