25.01.2022 Look who we spotted this afternoon... This cheeky Rainbow Lorikeet was happily perched in the Brachychiton acerifolius being quite chatty with us as we walked passed this afternoon. Just another one of our regular visitors to the gardens. Come and take a wander in the gardens and see who you might find in the gardens.

25.01.2022 Exploring Finch Hatton Waterway Garden Stenocarpus sinuatus, commonly known as the Wheel of Fire Tree is an indicative species of the Finch Hatton Gorge area. The Wheel of Fire Tree occurs in rainforests of north-eastern NW and eastern QLD. It gets its common name from the configuration and colour of the inflorescences in which the small flowers have a wheel like arrangement. It is certainly a striking tree! Come and find it growing in the Finch Hatton waterway garden, near the Café.

24.01.2022 Lagerstroemia speciosa, commonly known as Queen’s Crepe myrtle If you are looking for a nice shady spot to stop and relax along the Lagoons, look for the masses of pink-purple flowers of the Queen’s Crepe Myrtle stand out from a distance as you approach this stand of trees. It is a fast growing tree with smooth flaky bark and purple-pink flowers that bloom once in a year over the warmer months. You can find these trees flowering along the Lagoons just near the Japanese Sister City Garden.
21.01.2022 Syzygium aqueum, commonly known as the Water Apple (or Watery Rose-Apple) has been very festive with its bright red fruits on the tree. Water Apple is an evergreen shrub or small tree, usually growing 6-10m high. The fruits are usually eaten raw are known to be crunchy, crispy and juicy.

21.01.2022 Plants sales are back at Gardens Administration. Artanema fimbriatum, commonly known as the Native Snapdragon is just one species available. It is a spreading, low-growing perennial sub-shrub, with purple flowers most of the year. This little beauty can be grown in a pot or bedding area. It occurs in northeast Queensland down to northern NSW. These plants have been propagated and grown by NPQ-SGAP Mackay branch. A range of other natives are available, prices range between $3 and $5 each.
20.01.2022 What's Flowering in the Gardens? The tiny cream flowers of Commersonia bartramia, commonly known as the Brown Kurrajong can be easily seen in the Botanic Gardens, next to the Cafe along sections of the Bluewater Trail and Mackay right now. The Brown Kurrajong is a small spreading tree with layered branches sometimes right down to ground level. The flowers occur in sprays along the top of the layered branches to give the trees a snow laden effect. What do you think?

19.01.2022 Exploring the Finch Hatton Waterway garden Sphaeropteris cooperi (Syn. Cyathea cooperi) commonly known as the Scaly Tree Fern is a tall slender tree fern with a woody trunk, covered with smooth leaf scars. It is fairly fast growing, with fronds spreading to 4m. It occurs in protected rainforest gullies and along rainforest streams lines in QLD, NSW and WA. Come and enjoy the tree ferns on display in the Finch Hatton waterway garden.

The path from Lagoon Street down towards the Lagoons is shaded by a selection of rare palms and other monocotyledons from Australia and around the world with an under story of tropical foliage. The range of tropical plants here are quite amazing. This month we will take a closer look at some of the range of tropical plants that can be found here

17.01.2022 Exploring Palm Walk... Tapeinochilos ananassae, commonly known as the Back Scratcher Ginger is an understorey plant native to North Queensland. It grows between 2 to 4m, with the branches growing in a spiral fashion. The inflorescences consist of stiff bright red bracts which appear on top of leafless bamboo like shoots with small yellow flowers emerging from within each bract. You can find this plant growing along Palm Walk.

From birds and bees, to butterflies and other insects there are so many different pollinators around! This week, we will take a look at just a few that can be found visiting the gardens... One of our pollinators, Amegilla cingulata, the Blue banded bee is a stunning Australian native bee and one that can be commonly found in the gardens. They are about 11mm long and have band of blue across their abdomens.

12.01.2022 Exploring Coastal Lowlands in the Botanic Gardens... Coastal Lowlands garden can be found along the edge of the Eulamere Lagoon. A range of plants are found throughout the coastal environments of our bioregion. Differing physical and nutritional conditions across the lowlands have produced distinctive plant communities on beach sands, alluvial plains, dry rocky headlands and low coastal hills along rivers and swamps. This month, we will highlight a few of the species that can be found in the Coastal Lowlands gardens.
12.01.2022 From Monday (Nov 16), Lansdowne Road will be closed between Lagoon and Alexandra streets. A full road closure is necessary to replace the existing culverts as they span the full width of the road. The existing culverts are deteriorating and require immediate replacement. We expect the closure to be in place for the full duration of the works, until late-February 2021. Access will remain open to the existing shared pathway for pedestrians and cyclists in the area.... 11.01.2022 Exploring Coastal Lowlands.. Acronychia laevis Hard Aspen Acronychia laevis, commonly known as Hard Aspen is a small tree or large shrub with compact growth and dark shiny green foliage. Crushed leaves produce a citrus smell. It is cultivated for its small greenish white star shaped flowers and colourful four cornered fleshy fruits which are reportedly edible. It is common in the understorey of littoral forests and rainforests around Mackay.

11.01.2022 What’s Flowering in the Gardens? Looking festive with its thick green leaves and drooping racemes of reddish flowers is the Barringtonia acutangula, commonly known as the Freshwater Mangrove which has been flowering along the Lagoon pathway of the Gardens.

08.01.2022 What’s Fruiting in the Gardens? The fruits of the Omphalea celata, commonly known as Tree Omphalea can be seen overhanging the main entrance carpark off Lagoon Street. Tree Omphalea has soft drooping foliage, large fruit and marble sized seeds that germinate readily. A water wise plant that stores water in its fat fleshy carrot shaped roots, it is easy to grow in sandy, rocky and shallow soils. Tree Omphalea is the favoured food plant of the Zodiac Moth’s caterpillar. Plant one in your garden so this moth can visit and lay her eggs. Beware though as the caterpillars eat lots of leaves.

07.01.2022 What's Flowering Now? Tarenna dallachiana subsp. dallachianaTree Ixora. This species is flowering just in time for the festive season and its perfume is lovely! The Tree Ixora is a small to medium tree which is a characteristic component of rainforest regrowth. Its perfumed flowers attract adult ... butterflies and bees. It naturally occurs in NE and CE QLD and in Cape York Peninsula. Where can I find this plant? Find the Tree Ixora in the Orientation Gardens just in front of the fence of the Tropical Shade Garden. Dianella caerulea var. protensa commonly known as the Blue Flax Lily is a hardy, clumping perennial native herb which is very useful to plant along watercourses, as border plantings and rockeries in shaded areas. Come and see what else is for sale. Gardens Administration is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. All plants for sale have been propagated and grown by NPQ-SGAP Mackay branch at the Botanic Gardens nursery.
