25.01.2022 #throwbackthursday Australian Joint Stock Bank, Victoria Street, Mackay 1895. This building designed by Colonial Architect Frances Drummond Greville Stanley and supervised by architect Arthur Josling, is Mackay's oldest commercial building. Constructed in 1880, it opened for business on February 5, 1881 as the Australian Joint Stock Bank. Built of highley finished brickwork and stucco, it was renovated extensively by the Commonwealth Bank in 1978, with further extensions made at the back in 1986, but its historical front exterior was maintained. The upper floor once provided generous accommodation for successive managers and their families. : Image no: 4671

23.01.2022 #MackayPrideMonday It’s marine turtle nesting season! The nesting season runs from mid-October to January, and hatchlings generally emerge from December to the end of March. We spotted these tracks last week at Blacks Beach. ... Most of our local sandy beaches are potential nesting areas for flatback and green marine turtles. If you see a female turtle crossing the beach or digging a nest, do not approach it, make loud noises or shine bright lights as they are easily disturbed and may return to the water without laying any eggs. If you see turtle tracks, nesting or hatching activity, please contact Mackay & District Turtle Watch on 4954 9613 Did you know? Flatback turtles are the most common marine turtle on our beaches. Flatbacks can lay every two to three years. They lay about three to four clutches of 50 eggs (the size of a billiard ball). Green marine turtles occasionally lay on our local beaches, mainly island beaches. Greens turtles can lay every three to seven years. They can lay up to five clutches of 120 eggs (the size of a ping pong ball).

19.01.2022 There is just one week left to share your ideas and thoughts on the Woodlands District Park draft master plan, which is located in Andergrove. The draft master plan sees this 21-hectare site split into three distinct precincts Central Precinct, Lake Precinct and Woodlands Reserve Precinct, and each precinct will have its own unique feel. The Lake Precinct will allow residents to take in the serenity around the existing water feature, while also incorporating large open sp...aces and shared paths for exercise. The Central Precinct will serve as the key meeting place for recreational activities, with a district-level playground earmarked for this location, which will be similar in scale to the playgrounds at Northview Park and Queens Park. And, the Woodlands Reserve Precinct will highlight the significant environmental value of the park. Find out more and leave your comments > www.connectingmackay.com.au Also, stay updated on this project by subscribing to project update emails while you're there. Feedback will be open until October 22.

16.01.2022 Council’s Waste Services will be using a drone to conduct environmental testing at some of our landfill sites from tomorrow until Wednesday (Nov 11). The drone used does not have a camera so cannot take pictures or collect any personal information. It uses an infrared system to measure levels of different atmospheric gases. The presence of gases does not pose a threat to residents or the environment. Council collects the data every six months to identify and monitor any chang...es in the area. The use of a drone for environmental testing means that we can access more areas and reduce our carbon footprint by limiting the amount of vehicle travel required. Residents in nearby properties who may hear or see the drone will have received a letter from council advising them of the testing. For more information contact council on 1300 622 529.
