24.01.2022 The Maclean Scottish Shop will be reopening on Monday 6th July 2020. It will be run in accordance with the NSW Health Regulations. We ask the all customers please adhere to the rules for entering the shop. Stay healthy.

20.01.2022 To celebrate the shop’s 30th birthday, the committee would like to publicly acknowledge the generosity of the Maclean community, specifically the late Graham Leach, the late Sid Jones and the late Norm and Joan Kibble, who donated their shop fittings when the family chemist shop closed. The late Sid Jones, a popular and well-known butcher, was approached to rent his vacant shop next door to the butchery for the purpose of starting Maclean’s Scottish Shop Tourist Centre. The committee is also very grateful and acknowledges the support of Highland House in Brisbane, who supplied stock on consignment during the early establishment of the shop.

15.01.2022 CANCELLATION OF THE 116TH MACLEAN HIGHLAND GATHERING EASTER 10 & 11 APRIL 2020 In light of the Commonwealth Government's recommendation advising against non-ess...ential, organised public gatherings of more than 500 people, and after consulting with the Committee members of the Lower Clarence Scottish Association overnight, we have had to take the regrettable decision to cancel this year's Maclean Highland Gathering, due to be held on 10 & 11 April 2020. We would like to thank all competing bands, dancers, soloists, stall holders, sponsors and volunteers who contribute to making this event what it is and we apologise for the inconvenience that this will cause. I will be working to contact all bands, solo players, stall holders, sponsors etc in the coming days to make arrangements for repayment of any fees etc that have already been transferred. If you wish to contact me directly please call on 0429 842 472 or email [email protected]

08.01.2022 Tourist brochures are supplied by council and tourists are so grateful to have a face to face daily service in the Clarence valley. The shop has a visitor’s book, which records comments from National and International visitors, who praise the shop and the beauty of Maclean and its people. The committee would like to acknowledge and give thanks to the team of shop volunteers, who open the shop to assist with the promotion of Maclean and the Clarence valley and our customers, who embrace our shop to make our voluntary efforts so worthwhile.

05.01.2022 SCOTTISH SHOP CLOSURE Starting from Monday 23rd March until further notice. This is an important public health notice to help stop the transmission of the corona virus. The Federal Government and State requirements advise the closure of non-essential services, as well as trying to maintain the appropriate means of social distancing. The committee has taken the above action to close the Scottish Shop, as the shop fails to provide the space to meet government requirements. ... The health of our voluntary senior team is of utmost concern to our committee. See more

02.01.2022 The Maclean Scottish Shop Tourist Centre was established on the 4th December 1989. The shop this year is celebrating 30 years since that humble beginning, with the profits being injected back into Maclean. Some examples are, the Scottish Cairn, the Memorial wall, two Highway signage, the tartan clan poles, the hand painted windsails, flag poles, history plaques on heritage buildings and financial assistance to several organisations and festivals over those years

01.01.2022 A little more information about Scotland and its Emblem. THE THISTLE EMBLEM OF SCOTLAND The prickly purple thistle was adopted as the Emblem of Scotland during the reign of Alexander III (1249 -1286). Legend has it that an Army of King Haakon of Norway, intent on conquering the Scots landed at the Coast of Largs at night to surprise the sleeping Scottish Clansmen. In order to move more stealthily under the cover of darkness, the Norsemen removed their footwear.... As they drew near to the Scots it wasn't the only thing hiding under the cover of darkness. For one of Haakon’s men unfortunately stood on one of these spiny little defenders and shrieked out in pain, alerting the Clansmen of the advancing Norsemen. Needless to say it was the Scots who won the day. See more
