25.01.2022 How many pesky mosquitoes have you seen this summer? Here’s some food for thought: wherever there are mosquitoes, there is the risk of heartworm disease for your pet! Heartworm is a dangerous worm, and when an infected mosquito feeds on your pet’s blood, the heartworm larvae enter the bloodstream. The scary part is that these larvae mature into worms that can reach up to 30cm in length.... The worms mature in the bloodstream and eventually become lodged in your pet’s heart leading to heart failure. It is at this point that the disease can be fatal. Dogs are more commonly affected by heartworm disease but cats may also be at risk. The prevalence of heartworm in Australia has been mainly in tropical and subtropical coastal regions but in recent decades it has become increasingly prevalent in more southern areas. The take-home point is that with changing weather patterns and subsequent alterations in the distribution of mosquito populations, heartworm disease can be unpredictable. This is why prevention is SO important as we just don’t know where it might strike next. That’s why this week’s giveaway is a very important one! All you have to do to WIN is this prize for someone is... Tag someone WHO you think is DESERVING of this prize Tell us WHY you think they DESERVE a FREE worming injection for their pet And that’s it! *T&Cs The tagged person must be a registered client of good standing, (or if they are new to the area they can ring/go online and registered their pets details) to be eligible and agree to having their photo (or a picture of their pet) used in social media. When the giveaways are posted, people need to tag someone they think would be deserving of it and state why the best reason/most deserving is the winner chosen by our staff and the person/people tagged receive the prize.

24.01.2022 Misty ate a 18cm STICK Misty is a 7yr old Kelpie X that one afternoon was out playing with some local children and they were throwing sticks for her to fetch. During this time Misty, after chasing a stick suddenly cried, collapsed, and brought into the Maclean Veterinary Clinic.... After examination, Misty was found to have subcutaneous emphysema (which is air under the skin) around her neck and front leg and was also very reluctant to move her head. It was suspected that Misty had something stuck in her throat. Misty was then placed under a General Anaesthetic and had a tube placed in her airways. A foreign body was located through exploration and a whopping 18cm stick was removed from the soft tissue in the roof of her mouth. Misty was incredibly lucky that no major structures were damaged by the stick and that the stick did not penetrate any body cavities. Misty had a long recovery and spent a few days in hospital. She was then sent home on a soft food diet and lots of rest. This is Misty back in full health being rechecked at Maclean Veterinary Clinic after the incident. Misty’s adventure is an important lesson on why sticks are not appropriate objects for dogs to fetch/play with. They have the potential to cause major penetrating injuries and can even wear/fracture teeth, requiring extractions of teeth if chewed on.

24.01.2022 TICK SEASON Traditionally ticks were seasonal but here in the Clarence Valley we see them all year round. When paralysis ticks attach to your pet, they inject a neurotoxin which causes paralysis, respiratory depression, and if not treated, these animals will succumb to the deadly affects of tick toxin. Tick paralysis is one of the most common preventable causes of death in dogs and cats along the east coast of Australia. Some 10,000 dogs are affected each year, 5% of them... fatally. Prevention is better than a cure, so we recommend tick prevention to cover your pet, which come in a range of products you can purchase from us. Daily tick searches are still imperative as no tick prevention provides 100% protection. . . . . . #ticks #clarencevalley #vets #yambavets #macleanvets #nsw #paralysisticks #watchoutticksabout

21.01.2022 Many dogs are tempted to play with salbutamol inhalers. They are often left on bedside tables or in bags on the floor. They are made of plastic, like many toys,... and have saliva on them which makes them smell good. Salbutamol is helpful for people with asthma as it causes the airways to relax and open up. This occurs through activation of beta receptors (present in many places around the body - not just in the airways). Most salbutamol metred dose inhalers contain 200 sprays, and therefore a punctured inhaler can rapidly deliver very large amounts of medication directly into a dog’s mouth and lungs, leading to life-threatening poisoning. When this occurs, there is an overstimulation of the beta receptors as well as a significant movement of potassium into cells throughout the body, leading to dangerously low blood potassium levels. These effects can result in several complications including a fast heart rate, low blood pressure, a change in the way the heart beats, agitation and possibly damage to the heart muscle, seizures and weakness or paralysis which can affect breathing. To avoid accidental poisoning of your pet, keep inhalers out of reach and preferably locked away in a cabinet. Keep bags closed and off the ground. Never give your pet a human medication unless instructed to do so by your veterinarian. If your pet has been playing with an inhaler, or punctured one, call us for advice even if your pet appears normal. The service is free for all pet owners: 1300 869 738 (in Australia) or 0800 869 738 (in New Zealand).

08.01.2022 Cyclamens are prolific flowering plants that are popular at this time of the year for their beautiful and varied blooms that will continue through the winter mo...nths. We have had a number of enquiries as to whether they are poisonous to pets. The leaves and tubers (the part of the plant below the soil) contain irritant poisons called triterpenoid saponins, that are toxic to cats and dogs. Small ingestions cause drooling, vomiting and possibly diarrhoea that is usually self-limiting. If large amounts are eaten, especially of the tubers, more serious effects such as a dangerously irregular heart beat (arrhythmia), seizures and death could result. If your pet has ingested any part of a cyclamen or any other plant, call us on 1300 869 738 (from Australia) or 0800 869 738 (from New Zealand) for a tailored risk assessment and advice. Our service is free for all pet owners.

06.01.2022 Meet Ralph: he was found as an orphaned kitten at 5 weeks of age with a condition called bilateral eyelid agenesis, which essentially means he was born without properly formed eyelids. Fortunately for him, he was adopted by the practice owner Dr Megan who was able to get him reconstructive surgery with a specialist veterinary ophthalmologist (pet eye doctor). This amazing surgery prevented him from having a life of chronic irritation, pain, infection and eventually blindness.... He's now a naughty 5yo and you wouldn't think there was anything wrong with his eyes to look at him! Pet Eye Health Week aims to bring awareness about our pets eyes and to get everybody to look at your cat/dog/rabbit/lizard's eyes for the key signs of poor health: - redness - irritation - discharge - dullness/colour change - tear staining - asymmetry - vision loss We are fortunate to have Dr Jeremy working with us at Maclean who has completed extra qualifications in veterinary ophthalmology and loves everything eye-related. If you have a concern about your pet's eyes book an appointment to see him today! #peteyehealth #macleanyambavets #veterinaryophthalmology
