09.01.2022 Congratulations to Macleay College #journalism student, Liam Mendes, who chased a newsroom tip and landed his first print byline in The Australian. Liam learned that a Sydney woman's father was denied, at the last minute, an exemption from #coronavirus rules to move to Australia after he'd been given a visa, sold his home, and put all his possessions on a boat to the lucky country. Liam interviewed the man's daughter, put in requests for comment to the Government, and pitched the story to various media outlets. The story was snapped up by The Australian. Nice work Liam! #studymacleay #wechangelives #journalismmatters

08.01.2022 ... and in news just to hand. We've received word that Ron Ward has been granted the exemption he needed to travel to Australia. His daughter rang Macleay in tears to thank us for the great job done by journalism student Liam Mendes. Liam's story gave the case national exposure and undoubtedly pressured the government to overturn their decision. Nice work Liam!

07.01.2022 Meet aspiring PR Manager Ashish Gautam who is set to realise his career goals when he graduates from Macleay College this year. The Bachelor of Business student landed an internship with a NSW State Minister where he gained experience writing private member statements and researching policies. Ashish was able to build on this experience to secure a paid role with strategic PR firm, Primary Communication. Originally from India, Ashish’s move to Australia was his first trip ove...rseas. I knew somewhere inside me that I wanted to make something of my life, he said. I am fortunate for the kind of opportunities I am getting in this country as an international student. A shout out to lecturer Jeremy Taylor-Riley (CPM) who gave Ashish guidance and support during his degree. The fact that a professor or teacher believes in you as a person and believes in your career - I think that’s invaluable, said Ashish. See more

06.01.2022 Inspiring presentation this morning from guest lecturer and Macleay College alumnus, Daniel Doody who shared his career journey and insights on what it takes to make it as a multiplatform journalist. After graduating with Diploma in Journalism in 2015, Daniel landed newsroom roles at Sky News and Channel Ten. Daniel stressed the importance of approaching every new task with interest and enthusiasm and the need to step up and learn new skills when you have the opportunity. Aft...er three years, juggling two jobs (and a side hustle in hospitality) Daniel applied for a radio journalist role with East Coast Radio and Power FM, in Bega on the NSW South Coast. Seven months into the job, ABC News came knocking and offered him a role as a multiplatform news reporter. Daniel now covers local and community news, as well as stories of national interest such as December’s South Coast bushfires. What does Daniel like most about being a journalist? I love this job because, basically, I get paid to tell stories. It’s as simple as that. he said. See more

04.01.2022 Doctor-turned-journalist, Walkley Award-winning Dr Norman Swan, has become Australia’s voice of authority on all things pandemic. Currently one of Australia’s most in-demand journalists, Dr Swan took time out of his schedule to speak to Macleay College’s journalism students in a wide-ranging and thought-provoking discussion on his career, the COVID pandemic, health infrastructure and his investigation into the scientific fraud of Dr William McBride. Dr Swan also had a few tip...s about the role of performance in broadcast journalism. I’ve got to sit in a certain way, and I’ve got to look relaxed. I’ve got to watch when I inflect, because if I inflect at the wrong time, it leads the interviewee off the mark. Most interviews that you do are not antagonistic, they are simply to elicit information. The interviewee has to trust you that you’ll be ok. Not so much that you won’t challenge them, but that you won’t take them into some sort of quagmire. If you change the way you behave you’ve got to know the effect of what you’re doing and do it deliberately you’ve got to know how you’re behaving and the reaction it has on others. Good broadcast journalists do that. So you’ve got to get the story, it’s got to be accurate, it’s got to be everything else that you have in a print story, plus the element of performance. Thank you to Dr Swan for sharing his time and insights with us, to Macleay’s Head of Journalism, Fiona West, for organising this session, and to Olivia Babb our student journalist for doing an awesome job as host and Q&A moderator.

02.01.2022 Congratulations to the classes of 2019 and 2020. Special thanks to those who flew up from Melbourne to join us. We hope you enjoyed the graduation ceremony as much as we did.
