23.01.2022 Vale Dr Neil Spector, humanity has lost a noble soul today. Neil contributed so much to clinical research into cancer and tick borne disease including scientifi...c collaboration with PANDIS. Neil achieved so much despite his own courageous health battles including a harrowing heart transplant. Prof Gilles Guillemin had the pleasure to meet with Neil in the USA earlier this year after years of memorable zooms and PM's. I include the photo of Neil (left side of pic) and Gilles below. On behalf of the PANDIS consortium we honour Neil's significant research legacy and will continue to incorporate his findings into our work. Our sincere condolences to Neil's wife and daughter and to those whose lives he selflessly and indelibly touched. I include a tribute to Neil written by Dana Parish below, they reflect our sentiments too. The world has lost a hero and Heaven has gained an angel. It is with the heaviest heart that I share with you that our beloved Dr. Neil Spector passed away last night after a ferocious battle that began with a long-undiagnosed case of Lyme, which led to a heart transplant and subsequent remarkable comeback. Neil meant so much to the world, to all of us, and we meant so much to him. Nothing lit him up more than his beautiful family-- his wife Denise, daughter Celeste, and sweet pup Turbo. He loved his friends, his patients, his colleagues, the Lyme and cancer communities who he gave his soul to, and his life's work as an oncologist and scientist, which was filled with marvelous, life-saving cancer discoveries, and as of late, he made huge strides in the field of tick-borne diseases. He also loved a good gluten-free pizza with a glass of merlot and a spirited discussion about music, medicine, politics, travel, his dreams of another island get-away with Denise and Celeste. Neil was a poet, a memoirist, a marathon runner, the most gorgeous, generous, soulful, gem. He was gentle, humble, fierce, brilliant, the most caring, compassionate, intuitive, selfless human on Earth. He was a straight-shooter who suffered no fools when it came to scientific integrity. Neil belonged to the truth. I would jokingly pinch him to make sure he was real. My mom called him a sugar plum. When she had breast cancer a few years ago and went through chemo, he Facetimed her each week, like clockwork, on his own volition, to cheer her on. She would not have gone through with her life-saving treatment, she said, had he not pushed her (with 5 phone calls!) to do so. Her own oncologist was in disbelief as she had no luck in convincing my mom to go through with it. He will forever be missed, he will forever be loved, he will forever be ingrained in our hearts. And if there's one thing I know for sure, he will be the wind on our faces, the birds that sing in our windows, the feathers that fall at our feet. I love you so much, Neil, my dear soulmate, brother, angel. Thank you for your love and devotion. Thank you for giving everything you had to the world. You are the gift that will never be replaced.

16.01.2022 Let us introduce you to Dr. Vanessa Tan, Research Fellow from the Neuroinflammation and Neurotoxicity Group. Working as a research assistant, Vanessa was part ...of the first cohort of researchers that started at the Centre in 2013, where she first began her learning journey about this devastating disease. Vanessa then committed to dedicate her scientific career to fighting MND from the laboratory, I felt that science knew too little about MND, its causes and the factors that affect it she says. Vanessa is currently investigating biomarkers (measurable biological characteristics such as proteins found in blood) that can help us to determine different disease subtypes of MND and give a clear indication of the rate of disease progression, in the hopes that biomarkers will allow clinicians to have a consistent and more reliable way to measure disease progression. She is also studying the role of environmental factors in MND, such as a neurotoxin named BMAA, which is present in algae commonly found in water sources world-wide. She is working to determine if BMAA contributes to the cause of MND, and the potential mechanisms behind how BMAA causes toxicity that can lead to MND. Vanessa has not only battled MND from the lab bench. She was also involved in establishing the Neurodegenerative Disease Biobank and has had the amazing opportunity to work with patients from Macquarie’s MND Clinic: The clinic and biobank have always been a soft spot for me, as meeting the patients, and chatting to them about our research at the Centre is how it reminds me that our work is important, and how we can make a difference! When not working in the lab or the clinic, Vanessa loves baking. It is her very own lab at home. The most popular requests are her chocolate tart and the carrot cake, even though she’s not a big fan of the latter: I don’t like carrot cake, but everyone else does!. Well, definitely count us in for a slice of carrot cake! Vanessa is determined to make a significant contribution to our knowledge of the disease: The understanding of MND is really behind times, and we should really know more about it!. We know you’re making a big difference Vanessa! You can find out more about Dr. Tan’s work at: https://researchers.mq.edu.au/en/persons/vanessa-tan-2

13.01.2022 Congratulation to Dr Gayathri Sundaram for this study demonstrating that by blocking enzymes of the kynurenine pathway, she was able to stop MS in an EAE mice model. Huge therapeutic potential! https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32505212/

12.01.2022 Result of a collaborative project with USA scientists

12.01.2022 Our latest publication on biomarker for ALS through a collaboration with USA. We found that 2 molecules related to muscles (creatine and creatinine) are the most relevant markers (ALS vs Controls) Also not surprisingly we didn't detect BMAA in the blood of ALS patient. The cyanotoxin is not circulating abut hides somewhere in the body... Liver may be? or is integrated in proteins?... https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jproteome.0c00216#
