25.01.2022 Coal is still needed for power supply in the short-term, but Macquarie Business School research shows that the long-term business case for new coal projects no longer exists. Investments in coal are likely to become stranded and written down in as little as 10 years with renewables earning as much as $21 trillion by 2050. Australia needs to transition away from coal to renewables, but this involves leadership, policy and a plan similar to Germanys Energiewende. Also, the d...emand for coal from some of Australias main thermal coal export markets, specifically China and Japan, is in decline as both countries rapidly transition to clean technologies.
