15.01.2022 STORY There are few stories which have changed the course of my life like that of DR CATHERINE HAMLIN. . I first learned about Catherine’s miraculous work in Ethiopia and the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital when I watched an Oprah episode where Oprah interviews Dr Catherine Hamlin about her life’s work. The plight of beautiful, young girls, abandoned, shamed and horrifically damaged through days of labour ending in stillbirth spoke to me personally. . You see, it was 2006 and I ...had delivered my first baby, stillborn. A beautiful baby girl named Stella Rose. . My grief was raw and dark and primal but I was physically in tact and would heal. Monsieur Hunter was deeply grieving too and we cradled each other through. He doesn’t divorce me as is the case for most of these young African brides and thankfully I lived in a community where on the whole I was supported. I at least had the privilege of money to seek help. In my darkest hours as I missed my daughter, I knew how very lucky I was. . I went on to read ‘The Hospital by the River’ by Dr Catherine Hamlin and ‘Catherine’s Gift’ by John Little and worked on shifting my grief journey into a state of gratitude. . Sue Williams’ latest book ‘Healing Lives’, Two remarkable friends, Mamitu Gashe and Dr Catherine Hamlin, and their shared story of changing the world, one patient at a time is a MUST read in 2021. I cried my way through this incredible story, all the while giving thanks for my Sisterhood. . Women are so powerful when we raise each other up unconditionally and nurture one another in our darkest hours. 05.01.2022 STORY | I have WRITTEN often about my relationship with Art and Music and Grief. I know The Arts heal. . As devastating news broke over night of @chrissyteigen and @johnlegend’s stillborn son, Jack, I was reminded of when I first saw John Legend live. Legend had just released #GetLifted and Monsieur Hunter and I were beside ourselves excited to experience his masterful debut album live in Melbourne at Crown. A tiny sold-out gig for his earliest fans, we knew we very witnessin...g musical history. . I was in the early stages of my first pregnancy after months of fertility treatment, chronic morning sickness (peeing for Australia) and this event was beyond special for us. So joyful. . I would go on to deliver Stella Rose, stillborn at 26 weeks in March 2006 and lose another pregnancy almost a year later. Both losses equally devastating and life changing in equal measure. . I will shout Stella’s name from the rooftops until my very last days. . This month is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. I don’t need a dedicated month to remember my babies but I will take this opportunity tonight to send love to those grieving pregnancy loss. My thoughts are with those still finding their way through the darkest of days. My prayers are with those still nursing a broken heart. . I see you all .
