25.01.2022 How was your day, superhero parents? Hang in there
25.01.2022 I look at this little face and I think...wow. Kids are capable of so much. They WANT to grow. To learn. To be given responsibility. Kids rise to the challenges we give them. Instead of sitting with each child in 1:1 lessons and teaching them note by note, I give them the space and tools to be independent. To feel that thrill of working it out themselves. And then we cheer, perform for each other, get super excited and then play awesome games! ... I love how these kids have become so enthusiastic about learning. Its how school should be

24.01.2022 On my way to lessons this afternoon, I was feeling quite anxious and suffering a good amount of doubt in my abilities as a teacher. Sometimes I want to give my kids ALL the opportunities and help them learn everything!! Choosing what to focus on with the students each week/month/year takes a lot of guts and determination ... I value their education so highly that I always feel like it has to be perfect! But then I showed up. Taught my first class of 4 kids. And they came wi...th their own interests, stories, lives, fears and excitement. They participated and asked questions. Laughed together. Helped each other out... And I was reminded that its not about having the perfect class content. Its about having a dynamic, life-giving, fun environment to learn in. Nothing helps kids learn hard things more, than giving them an EXPERIENCE that makes them want to stick around and try. If I give them the best experiences, the learning will come. So, after teaching 4hrs and 15 students this afternoon, Im still enthusiastic and filled with joy. Just with sightly more sleepy eyes
23.01.2022 100% focus!! Miss Sarah is teaching the girls "We Wish You A Merry Chrisrltmas". Proud to say these 2 students learnt the song with gusto and pride in their new skills!
22.01.2022 Finnick was super quick, very excited and played this song 4x in class and finished it during our practice time What an excellent display of concentration and pride in his work
22.01.2022 Happy Easter to my favourite music families ever
22.01.2022 Awesome effort by our favourite guitar teachers hard working student
21.01.2022 Discussing #RUOK day with my 4pm pre-teens piano class today. They asked what the day was for... Me: Have you ever felt sad on the inside but smiled and pretended to be happy on the outside? Kids: YES... Me: Well sometimes, people feel like that for a long time and they just wish someone asked, "Are you okay?" Me: *Clearly thinking they understand* Think of it this way: When you felt secretly sad and hid it, did you ever wish someone asked if youre okay? Kids: Nah. Kids: No way! Nope Kids: I just want to be left alone. No nagging! Me: Okay... I think we missed the point here.
21.01.2022 Had a gorgeous young boy in lessons this morning, who was so curious and willing to learn everything all in 30minutes! Its so easy to forget the mind of a small child. The testing, scientist phase which is so essential to their growth and ownership of who they are in the world. Its so easy to skip that sometimes painstakingly slow phase of exploring colours, opposites, sounds and textures. To instead GIVE the child the correct answer so we can quickly move on to the "bigge...r picture" and what seems more important. But taking the time to really enjoy exploring the tiny, minute details, is exactly what helps a child fall in love with the process of learning. The process of enjoying discovering new information. Why does it sound that way? How did this happen? What happens if I do this instead? Will it create a different response? Teaching and parenting isnt just about being patient to wait for the right answer. Its about patiently enjoying the small moments, so we can really appreciate the big moments. Our little kids have it all worked out!!
19.01.2022 I love Jedds willingness to try again! He played this song wonderfully. He ALSO practiced it with very focused determination when I wasnt even near him to listen. He loves to play and I love his smiles too
19.01.2022 Another creative body percussion dance from another "big kids" crew. Look at their epic last pose
19.01.2022 Nice to know we all made it through those 12 weeks online
19.01.2022 #FreebieLesson do you have a spare 10min? Im recording our online piano videos for Term 2... And I thought Id share a lesson with you here. Grab your 5-7yr old child & learn some rhythms with us today! Comment below if you would like to see another #FreebieLesson in the future
19.01.2022 This is Riyas story of her little hedgehog hiding under her fingers (to keep them nice and round). It was funny to hear her last minute story-twist, when she realised shed placed the imaginary hedgehog in the hot lava! I used to teach this sweet girls older sister when they lived in Australia. Now, thanks to Zoom, Riya gets to ask me "how do you know my big sister?" all the way from the USA. Weve come full circle!
18.01.2022 What makes performing a song you wrote completely by yourself, less daunting? Well... 1. Having piano friends listen, who will encourage you, and 2. Having piano friends who will also be playing their song. As soon as you also have to do something scary, you have more respect and empathy towards others doing the same thing.
18.01.2022 Look, the afternoon didnt start well as I set up the piano classroom with a teenage sized huntsman running around my feet But then these kids came. And taught each other new songs. And sung together. And exclaimed "Wow, that sounds so good Jedd!" to their little piano classmates... And everything was just perfect after all
18.01.2022 This kid!! He already completed step 1 of our "pinwheel project" today by adding chords to an existing song and making it sound awesome. Love seeing his rhythm & pride for this song. Well done Luke Onto challenge number 2!!
18.01.2022 One of the most beautiful things in our Lil' Kids class is how they bring so much joy and feed off each other's energy. We are learning one of their favourite songs and the best way to do that is through singing, funny actions and lots of laughs. Can't wait to hear the finished song!!
17.01.2022 It was so wonderful to have the kids back in class today. I missed them!! We had fun playing group songs together and writing our own pieces. Welcome back kids!
16.01.2022 I LOVE this. Kids imaginations are incredible and need to be nurtured and protected.
15.01.2022 One of my favorite moments in our story writing hangouts last week. The task: Write a letter to yourself from the future, as a 25yr old. ...One boy gave me such a "ew thats so old" look when I said 25yrs old. He was even more shocked to hear that I was 25, so he needs to keep his facial expressions in check! ... These kids are listening intently to each other, but also hard at work - writing letters & exploring their personalities. Its so nice for me, as a teacher, to li...sten to them talk freely about what they hope to achieve...when theyre MY age! It reminds you how precious it is to have a clear mind, and a vivid imagination. Your 10-year-old self believes you can do ANYTHING. So, I wonder if what your 10yr old self thinks, is actually true?
15.01.2022 This week we have been writing "Memorable Melodies" and exploring what makes pop songs sound great! I love group lessons for song writing. Theres no pressure to do it "right". Its just 6 kids sitting at their keyboards and experimenting with sounds they love. No teacher lurking over their shoulder (most of the time ;)) A FAVOURITE of the kids is "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd. Makes sense when its now a famous tik tok dance haha!
13.01.2022 We had our first teen class on Friday. Such solid concentration from these teens. They chose the song & learnt the melody in only ONE lesson! Recognise the tune?
13.01.2022 Ummm anyone else feel like this schedule was written specifically for them?
13.01.2022 Should I be concerned that I dressed like this for all 24 of my students online classes yesterday, and not a single kid questioned my outfit? Its as if my sparkly hat didnt surprise them one bit
12.01.2022 Your task: Write a song in 5minutes! I told the kids, to write a song you have to be able to REMEMBER it... so Finnick played a song that had a pattern so he wouldnt forget. Way to go buddy!
10.01.2022 I love seeing Hunters song writing skills develop over time! In only 10min of class today, he created this tune all by himself. We are working on tapping a foot whilst playing, to really internalize the beat... its harder than you might think!! Enjoy this original composition
09.01.2022 Clinton said to me "I cant create my own song. I dont know what keys to play!" So we explored how to improvise (make up on the spot). He plays HIGH, MIDDLE & LOW sounds to match me. Love his rhythm, his bopping to the beat, his smiles and his serious attention to what hes doing. This boy has super creative music making skills!
09.01.2022 In class, Luke told me hed been working hard all week on a song he was writing. I couldnt wait to hear it. Got this video from his parents tonight. How great is Lukes strong bass line, his super cool use of chords and the way he gets louder and faster to build suspense!
08.01.2022 Anyone recognise this tune? Weve been doing piano tutorials over the holidays and Im stoked to get my 3rd video back from the kids, showing their progress. Celestial tried it with 2 hands!! Go girl!!
06.01.2022 Too often, we see only the finished product of performances. But there are hours of hard work, teamwork, preparation, laughter, frustration, and "lets repeat that ONE MORE TIME, shall we?". Such moments build resilience and friendships. As you will see in their interactions These kids light up my day, as do all my students. Enjoy our Thursday kids first playthrough (by themselves) of their new piece
06.01.2022 FREE HANGOUTS TOMORROW These have been the highlight of my week and Ive had so many amazing messages of feedback from those of you who have joined us so far. Please choose your times online. (see link in comments)... Hope youll join us! See more
06.01.2022 Quick thought: Switching to group lessons has helped my students find confidence in their ability to try new music and explore how to make sounds without fear of it being "not good enough" in the teachers eyes. Its more relaxing to make music with peers!
06.01.2022 All our 'big kids' have been making up body percussion dance moves in class, to remember for next week. I love seeing their creativity and how the activity brings them all together
06.01.2022 We went on a super fun adventure in our #holidayhangouts. Thanks to all 17 of our friends who joined us for these classes today. Your beautiful feedback reminds me that our kids crave social connection right now. "Y thoroughly enjoys the sessions. Really appreciate you taking the time out to host the sessions and engage with the kids" ... "The girls LOVE your sessions. When can we join again? Hey!! Thank you SO much. That was AMAZING! Hes been showing us his drawings and telling us all about it. ....... Keep spreading joy and love
03.01.2022 I tried to get out this weekend to breath some fresh air and clear my crazy, chaotic brain Id love to see what you got up to! Share a photo in the comments
03.01.2022 We had a cosy blanket lesson today. The best way to keep warm & toasty, and keep our minds focused
03.01.2022 My gorgeous 5-7yr old class hard at work
01.01.2022 Beautiful for little ones and for us big ones who love Disney
