24.01.2022 When life gives you lemons...... you use them to decorate a birthday cake for @real.chrissa . Unfortunately we arent celebrating her birthday together tonight but I couldnt let her significant birthday pass with her having a special cake. The cake is @magnoliakitchen beautiful carrot cake with lemon cream cheese icing. How good is that @colour.mill yellow! If you know me, my cakes usually have a story but with not wanting to venture to the shops I just pulled together whatever I had here. Looking at the cake now though, the gold topper and chous represent 50 golden years and a reminder we still need to celebrate the good during this time. 22.01.2022 Happy 40th lockdown birthday to @jorgiweddingcelebrant . Jorgi knew she couldnt have a party but I love that it didnt stop her treating herself to a celebration cake just for her. The only brief for design was pink and fun. Knowing Jorgi is a wedding celebrant I made confetti using wafer paper painted with @sweetsticksau. I knew Jorgi wore hot pink shoes on her wedding day so wanted hot pink to be a feature. The balloons of course were a sign of celebration. None of the ...ideas for design was discussed with Jorgi or her husband so I couldnt believe what I saw when I delivered her cake. From her doorway I could see that Jorgis house was almost completely filled with balloons the exact same colour as the balloons on her cake. Some of them had gold spots and some had confetti just like the cake!!! 22.01.2022 Happy 18th birthday to Emma. Knowing the temperature for the party was going to be 43 degrees and then humidity to follow, I needed to come up with a design that could go straight from the fridge and into the elements! Ganache was my medium this time as you can adjust the ratios of chocolate and cream depending on the seasons. When cakes come out of the fridge and come to room temperature they sweat. By using coloured ganache and gold leaf I knew the cake would still look good while it was sweating (unlike me when Im exercising). The colour request from Emma was for aqua and gold. The design inspiration came from knowing Emma has competed at a high level for gymnastics and aerobics. 21.01.2022 This was my small contribution to the Melbourne Food Armys delivery to the frontline health workers at the Alfred Hospital. If youve spent any time at a hospital or know someone who works at one, you know the staff work long, busy and at the moment high risk shifts. The Melbourne Food Army coordinate volunteers who cook home cooked meals and treats for front line health workers so they can have a nutritious and sustaining meal while on their shift. Selfishly it was an opportunity for me to experiment with a different painting medium and technique. Liam’s passions are Dungeon and Dragons, Warhammer, military history and is learning to fly - lucky for me the members of my family have very similar interests and passions so I could draw on their knowledge of the topics. To tie in all of the brief requests, I created a continuous line drawing of a dragon, Warhammer sword and the 20 sided Dungeon and Dragons dice a historical plane. Joining each illustration was a heartbeat to represent passion for each interest. On top is the brush and paint pot used to paint the miniature figurines that go with the games. 20.01.2022 Today is my mother in-law Patricias birthday. Sadly she passed away peacefully on Friday night. We were planning to have little celebration for her with dinner and cake tonight - we still will be. This hand painted cake was inspired by a silk scarf we gave her for Christmas. From the time we gave it to her she wore it each Sunday night she had dinner with us. There was hardly a week her house didnt have a bunch of fresh flowers so Ive added a fresh rose to her cake for her. Inside is a coconut and lemon cake filled with homemade passion fruit curd (one of her favourite flavours). 14.01.2022 Happy birthday to me. The Mad Hen family have recently returned from a trip to London and France. Long story short - our trip wasnt what we hoped it would be as I was quite ill for most of the trip. Of the three weeks we were away there were only about three days I was well enough to actually leave the accomodation. My birthday cake this year is inspired by one of the good days I had - visiting Notting Hill and Portobello Road. It was a wet, cold and freezing day but my pin...k and red polka dot umbrella kept me dry. I love colour so instantly fell in love with all the pink, blue, yellow and mint coloured houses. The love hearts are for my husband and kids who were an incredible support to me while I wasnt well. 07.01.2022 ‘We Love Ya Guts’ was the design starting point for this surprise 50th birthday cake for a gastroenterologist husband and dad. Rupert is a paediatric gastroenterologist so I wanted the cake to have a cartoon feel. The stomach, liver, gallbladder, bile duct, small intestine and large intestine were all edible (the colon and rectum weren’t ). I certainly had fun combining my background as a biology teacher and my current cake brain for this one.

07.01.2022 How are you going with your mask wearing Victoria? There has been less demand for cake recently so Ive turned my hand to sewing and selling masks. Ive been making all different size custom fit masks for customers using their face measurements. This means the masks fit properly down to the chin and up to the ear. With them fitting up to the ear it means no pressure from the elastic behind the ear causing irritation. Ive been wearing the masks all day at work and havent had any ear irritation and have been able to talk comfortably. Swipe to see s the different styles that have been sent out so far. If youve spent any significant time in hospital (I certainly have) you know they are angels. There are nurses whose names I dont remember but I remember the way they made me and the comfort they gave when it was needed. I have a special place in my heart for the midwives who helped bring my two kids into the world and who were there when the baby blues hit and my boobs were riddled with mastitis . The others are the palliative care nurses who were so beautiful with my mum in her final weeks. Thanks nurses. #internationalnursesday

05.01.2022 The start of 2020 has been a tough start to the year, so it was lovely to get a request to make a cake for something that has bought happiness. Congratulations to Libby who submitted her Ph.D thesis. Three of her friends organised the cake as a surprise for her. Libby likes pink so I gave her a pink diary sitting on her completed thesis to represent the organisation needed to complete her thesis (and 2020 is the weirdest year ever). Getting together for a real champagne isnt allowed at the moment so instead I painted some gold champagne bubbles on her diary. Post-It notes are for what she has achieved. The only design request I had was to include some liquorice allsorts in memory of a special person. 02.01.2022 ‘Buon Compleanno’ to Marcella. Her husband Tom organised a surprise cake for her with the brief being green, red and white representing the colours of Marcella’s Italian heritage. The challenge at this time of year was incorporating the red and green so the cake still looked like a birthday cake and not a Christmas cake. My inspiration came from the National flower of Italy. My research told me the Italians regard the rose as the traditional flower, but the white lily is the religious flower - an elegant way to incorporate green, red and white. 02.01.2022 @mentonegirlssecondarycollege organised a little biscuit gift for all the staff and VCE girls on their return to face to face teaching today. YOU GOT THIS was the message to the Year 12 girls. It was WELCOME BACK to the Year 11 girls and a massive Thank you to the staff. Im not in the classroom at the moment but still work in a support role in a school so Ive seen first hand the amount of work teachers have had to do to keep the learning happening. As a year 12 mum, Ive seen how well the girls have adapted to remote learning.
