24.01.2022 I've had this series on my shelves for years and am just now getting around to starting it.... a book series about books and libraries and an alternative history... yes please! Erm - is my nerd showing?

24.01.2022 I've heard great things about 'The Deep' - like a Stephen King horror underwater... this subject matter will definitely have me ill-at-ease. Right up there as one of my greatest fears, trapped deep underwater in the dark, feeling the crush of pressure, running out of air, and knowing there is something menacing in the pitch waiting to eat you. What's your greatest fear come to life in a book?

24.01.2022 Entertaining re-visit to some fan-girly characters, but felt a little light on plot. Genre: Y/A, Fantasy, LGBT No. of pages: 356 The story is supposed to be over. Simon Snow did everything he was supposed to do. He beat the villain. He won the war. He even fell in love. Now comes the good part, right? Now comes the happily ever after [ 534 more words ] https://strokingfire.wordpress.com//book-review-wayward-s/

23.01.2022 and by is it important to create one for your book Launching your book, or gaining exposure through media outlets can give you immediate results and boost not only your sales, but your profile as an author. When you have toiled for months and years writing your novel and honing it into a masterpiece you would want it to have the best possible chance to become a commercial success. 22.01.2022 Another underhyped series... plus I love my science fiction. This has been suggested to fall under the space opera banner too, but we won't know until I give it a read. But the blurb has already roped me in! On a side note: the dude with a ratstail on the cover is taking me back to the '80's, my brother had one for years. :D

20.01.2022 With all the struggles we've faced in 2020, watching the news cover injustices and politics, this quote resounds even stronger with me. Looking forward to spending the holidays with 'Relic' from Alan Dean Foster (same author who brought you 'Alien.')

19.01.2022 Nobody tagged me for this, but I saw it on The Nut Free Nerd and thought it looked fun! Holly adapted it from the The Booktuber Oldie Tag, which was created by Monica Kim. 1. How long have you been part of the book blogging community? I started blogging in earnest in February of 2013. Suddenly the whole world of fellow writers and book reviewers was open to me. 19.01.2022 All the crew get their time to shine in this big screen styled finale. Genre: Y/A, Science FictionNo. of pages: 827 Princess Winter is admired for her grace, kindness and beauty, despite the scars on her face. She's said to be even more breath-taking than her stepmother, Queen Levana... 18.01.2022 I was thinking over the BLM movement, and casting an eye back to an article I had written in 2014 regarding Indigenous characters in popular Australian YA fiction (you can read it here) and how the landscape has evolved recently. This is not going to be an article on politics, or black deaths in custody, but rather what I have witnessed in the publishing landscape and my own personal experience throughout my reading lifetime around discrimination that has held back diversity. 18.01.2022 I’ve been reading articles and having discussions with my peers and industry professionals regarding the future of self-publishing, and while the outlook is generally positive, the reputation isn’t so bright. When canvasing readers about self-published titles I generally get a pensive face and when I push harder, the responses I get revolve around poorly produced cover art, poorly written novels that have not been sufficiently developed or edited; and occasionally, the reader desires a physical copy, only to find the novel is available only in ebook format.... https://strokingfire.wordpress.com//is-the-self-publishin/

17.01.2022 So excited to have the rest of this trilogy in my hot little hands - At this moment in time, you're looking at my favourite science fiction read for 2020. I wonder if my ranking will change with a number of sci-fi reads yet to come for the year... What's your top science fiction for this year? All recommendations received with gratitude!

17.01.2022 Though I had issues with the novel, Ebershoff's writing is beautiful. I found this particular quote resounding not only in protagonist Lili's head, but also in the transgender community in general. Though our society is slowly evolving to inclusivity, there is still the existence of transgender invisibility. No-one should be ignored just because they are a little different.

17.01.2022 I am so excited to add this to my 'to read' pile. It sounds like a lot of fun... space, alien overlords, sarcastic humor. Right. Up. My. Alley. Stay tuned for a review coming soon. Anyone have recommendations for a books similar to 'Chilling Effect?'

17.01.2022 A more grown-up take of JLA’s famous franchise that didn’t quite do it justice. Genre: Y/A, Science Fiction, Romance No. of pages: 384 Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy. [ 616 more words ] https://strokingfire.wordpress.com//book-review-obsession/

16.01.2022 Space opera of battling planets from a far flung solar system. Currently halfway through the final book of this duology. Seeking other recommendations for the space opera genre - I don't see a lot of recent releases from this niche, which is weird considering the popularity of the Star Wars franchise...

15.01.2022 Cute romance, great rep of mental illness... Genre: Y/A, Contemporary, Romance, Mental Health No. of pages: 358 If you could read my mind, you wouldn't be smiling. Samantha McAllister looks just like the rest of the popular girls in her junior class. But hidden beneath the straightened hair and expertly applied makeup is a secret that her friends would never understand: Sam has Purely-Obsessional OCD and is consumed by a stream of dark thoughts and worries that she can't turn off. 14.01.2022 I love it when I discover there are sequels to books I enjoyed that I thought were a standalone. Haven't seen any hype for Michael Barakiva so I thought I'd give him a spruik here!

14.01.2022 Keeping track of my yearly goals of the way throughsheesh where did the year go?! Much of my local area is returning to normal with relaxed precautions from the Covid-19 pandemic, but I am starting to see the long road it is going to take for the economy to return to normal. We’ve been lucky. One of us in the household has always been able to work which means no financial stress or worrying about putting food on the table. 12.01.2022 I got the bind-up of this trilogy and it's been suggested for fans of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' so we'll have to see how this measures up - and no need to wait for a sequel, it's all right there. My summer holidays are looking great right now for reading material!

09.01.2022 Reclaiming old habits... about time! With the virus that shall not be named causing many States in Australia to jump up and down the levels of restriction I'm still gobsmacked at the world we are living in - and the stupidity of the few causing issues for the rest of the population. People: get tested, follow the guidelines. Use some common sense and err on the side of caution. [ 591 more words ] https://strokingfire.wordpress.com//im-free-im-free-an-au/

09.01.2022 Great concept for a dystopian. One of my favourites. Genre: YA, Dystopia No. of pages: 306 The survivors of the Monument 14 have finally made it to the safety of a Canadian refugee camp. 03.01.2022 Latest addition to my Kasie West collection. Just in the mood to sit in the sun room with a cuppa and watch over the duck on the pond while escaping into a light romance.

02.01.2022 Enlightening personal history of identity, country and family. Genre: Memoir, Non-Fiction, War, History No. of pages: 400 Magda Szubanski's childhood in a suburban migrant family was haunted by the demons of her father's life in wartime Poland. 02.01.2022 Buying a book just because of the cover art = guilty as charged! But 'The Last 8' sounds like it could be a riot of a new series. I'm always a sucker for an alien invasion storyline... who's with me? Anyone?

01.01.2022 I noticed last week that I have posted over 500 book reviews since starting this blog, so I thought I'd commemorate this milestone with a badge. A little nod to myself for a great achievement. Feel free to use this badge for your blog if you have reached this milestone too. Happy book reviewing! https://strokingfire.wordpress.com//10/over-500-book-revi/
